History

Established in 1979.

Sean Holley born in Glin, County Limerick in 1934 was raised on the banks of the Shannon River. His grandmother, Sara O’Mara, owned a dance hall where Sean’s father’s group, «TJ’s All Star Band,» often played. Sean moved to London as a teenager where he met Kathleen McKeone from Kings Court, County Cavan & married in 1956.

In 1958 they came to America on the QE II and Sean’s first jobs included working as a dishwasher at the Biltmore Hotel and as a hose maker for the Apex Department Store. In 1966, Sean purchased the Lennox Grille on Broad St. in South Providence where Sean first coined the phrase «do the right thing» when he decided to leave the bar open for five days straight during the Blizzard of 1978.

In 1979 Sean brought a piece of Ireland to this Italian neighborhood when he took over the former Dempsey’s & combining the «mc» from McKeone with his first name he opened the doors to McShawn’s Pub — serving the best corned beef sandwiches ever since!
