The Home Depot

I ordered a new toilet for as part of a bathroom remodel. The store offered to install it for an amazingly low price, and take away the old unit. When the day came, the delivery man unbolted the old toilet and carried it away to the truck. Then he came back and inspected the toilet location and announced that he could not install the new toilet because the toilet flange was rusty. I innocently suggested that he just install a new one, since surely this is an item that any plumber in that business must have on his truck. The answer was no, they only allocate 20 minutes total for the whole operation and the time would not stretch to replacing the toilet flange. So he just dumped the new toilet in the middle of the bathroom floor and left. That was it. I do not recommend Home Depot installation service. Just buy the goods and then pay somebody who will take responsibility to do your installation.

We ordered a kitchen that was to be delivered in only 2 weeks. Yeah right! The same night it was ordered, the entire order had to be done again over the phone. 2 weeks came and went.2 weeks after that we got a tracking number that never showed anything.
Another week or so after that (after constant contact on a daily basis from us) the order was refunded because the delivery company said it was completely damaged. Had to wait another couple of days for the refund to process so it could be reordered, again.
Ordered the cabinets now for the 3^rd time, with another bogus 2 week delivery date. A month or so later the cabinets arrived, no notice except for a call a couple of hours in advance. Good thing I was home. To my surprise not only did we get the kitchen we ordered, but we also got the original order plus some.
Our option was take it all or nothing at all. Well, we weren’t going through this again. We called Home Depot to come pick up the extras and credit our account for the return. They refused to credit anything saying we had not paid for them. We didn’t have to call either, it was a courtesy.
Cabinets were picked up and we were offered a measly $ 200 credit. Hardly worth the 2 months of aggravation and having no kitchen. It took 3 weeks to even get that credit. A check was sitting in the store dated a week before it was presented to us, only because we had to return a damaged sink.
Chad and Jason are the managers that were involved in this and could care less what we wanted. I sent emails to Jason telling him what we wanted for the hassle, and he didn’t even bother responding.
Stay away, shop somewhere else!

Once again, the guys who work here really aren’t willing to help other guys. It’s tough enough for a guy to ask for help especially in hardware, but today I was trying to locate a Schlage lockset in the bins and, after a few minutes I decided to interrupt the man at the end of the aisle who had been chatting with someone since I’d arrived. He seemed rather annoyed to cut his conversation short even after I apologized for interrupting. Then after using his scanner on the display tag to locate the bin number, he made a couple of incorrect guesses on the right match before managing to find it. Then he said «that wasn’t as hard as you thought after all. That was an old friend from my town I was talking to» and then he walked off. The moral of the story once again, is never interrupt any associate for help even if it’s their aisle. FYI, my attractive wife gets excellent service every time so I’ll have to send her next time.

Update: I take it all back. Jason changed his mind and allowed me to use the truck. I like Home Depot again!
Original post: Worst policy ever! I just moved into town from out of state and needed to buy a dryer. Unfortunately, this Home Depot couldn’t get the one I wanted for three weeks. So I went next door to HHGreg and bought the same dryer. Home Depot won’t let me use their rental truck to take the dryer home (less than a mile away) because it not an «in store purchase!» This has got to be the most ridiculous policy ever. Jason, the manager, says they changed their policy on truck rental because the truck was getting too banged up. What the hell does that have to do with the «in store purchase» policy???

Our four day old gas dryer broke and after having the GE tech at our house we were told that the belt that we needed was on back order and we would be without a dryer for close to a month. Went in to home depot and Jason could not have been more helpful. He called the Home Depot parts warehouse and confirmed that the part was on back order. We are now swapping out our dryer for a new one. I was very impressed with Home Depot in Crystal Lake, and will definitely be going back for any other big purchases that we need to make.

Great return policy. Took back sheetrock I purchased in August of last year. They were able to issue me a credit on a Home Depot gift card

Very disappointed in paint department at this Home Depot. My husband and I patiently waited at counter to have paint tinted. However the ONE person in this department who clearly saw us waiting decided to help everyone else first even though we were there before them. Just walked out. I would prefer to spend my money at Menards across the street. They are much nicer there! Wish I could leave ZERO stars.

If you want to go to Home Depot to buy a door don’t go before Noon. Went today to buy a sliding glass door and after waiting a half hour for someone to show up after being told they would send someone to assist us, we were told they couldn’t help us. Apparently no one works in that dept before Noon. There was no one in the entire store that was comfortable in selling us a door. At the service desk they told us to go down to contractor services to see Lee because Lee use to work in the door dept. Really? So now we have to go find someone so that we can give them our money. Don’t think so. Gone to Lowe’s.

Message to the management — watch how your staff speaks to customer — some are great and deserve to be noticed — others need training in manners.
I made a purchase at the garden center — made a mistake regarding the price of a plant — the cashier apologized more than once although I admitted it was my error. Awesome gentleman.
At the return register, I explain my error — and cashier rubs it in by pointing at the price and telling me it’s right there — really? That’s how you talk to a customer?

What can I write in a review of The Home Depot without sounding redundant to those who come here all the time? The people working here are very friendly and helpful. However, I wonder how much actual knowledge they have about building, plumbing, electrical, and so on… (If they really were knowledgeable wouldn’t they be working in the trades making double or triple their hourly wage)… I like that there’s a hotdog stand at the exit, I’ll sometimes get a Chicago style hotdog (with everything including celery salt) and a drink on the way out (they’re actually pretty good !).
Remember a few rules-​of-​thumb when coming here. If you need some lumber cut to size, make sure the person doing the cutting measures twice and cuts once. Take a look at the prices of plumbing parts here so when the plumber charges you, you’ll know how much mark-​up they’re ripping off…
I’ll be back, who doesn’t come back to The Home Depot???

They have free assembly for certain grills. The staff has a sound knowledge base for most any project. I recieved great advice and information for projects I was completing around my house. This saved me over $ 400 in labor costs by me doing the work. Thanks Home Depot!

The best Home Depot I’ve ever been in, hands down. Almost 4 years ago, when we first bought our home, went there the day we closed with a list of stuff. The manager (forgot his name, looked a little like Al from Home Improvement) spent over an hour with us walking us through what we did (and didn’t) need — that impression is with me still… and made the day special… Since we’ve been in CL — we’re in there usually once a week — service is always friendly — and our dog LOVES it there… a lot of the workers have treats in their aprons for him, and a few even know our Luke by name. It is THE perfect combination of variety and price of a giant store with the friendliness of a neighborhood hardware store…

Love this location. Been doing some «work» around the house and hands down got the best stuff at this location.
Everyone is friendly and they joke around with you, bought a smoker the last time I was in here. The guy was totally friendly, helpful etc… Good experience and everything I needed was in stock!

This HD is the best I’ve ever been in — honestly, everyone seems GENUINELY interested in assisting you! Lumber, Tools, Appliances, to check-​out — everyone I’ve worked with has taken the time to listen to my needs and walk me through ideas, suggestions and steps. Just purchased a refrigerator from them — Ed in Appliances could not have been more helpful! Nice people who really are a pleasure to do business with!

I usually end up here because Lowe’s always seem to be overpriced, and the service is great at depot (Try finding someone to help you at Lowes). I had a lot of help with plumbing questions while doing a bathroom renovation.

The Unilocal map location/​address is wrong! Its listed near Virginia and Rt. 14 but really it’s near Rt. 31 and Rt. 14.
All the hardware, materials, and tools you could possibly need or want for home repair.
Bonus points for the Vienna hot dog stand inside by the exit!
