Dallas North Tollway

I’m paying to sit in a parking lot!!! This is ridiculous!!! 1 am sitting in traffic for 45 minutes. NTTA, if the tollway is backed up this bad– fucking close it!!! You should at least consider discounting your rates when traffic is at stand still!!!

ABSOLUTELY THE WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE.
I called in at 420 pm and the greeting advised a 3 – 9 minute wait. After 20 minutes, I was disconnected.
I called in again and waited on hold for over 25 minutes when I was told it would be a 12 minute wait. After approx. 40 minutes, I hung up. WHAT A WASTE A TIME.
The highway patrol/​DPS officers who work The tollway and George Bush are useless ticket writers. They couldn’t make it on a real police force, so they got a step up from a security guard to a ticket writer.
THESE GUYS HAVE TOO MUCH POWER/​CONTROL AND CUSTOMER SERVICE IS LAST ON THEIR LIST.

People, get off your #*%&ing phones on the tollway! On my daily commute, especially when the traffic is slow, I’d say well over half the people I see are looking at their phones. Do you know why the traffic is slow? Probably because someone was looking at their phone and caused an accident.
The vast majority of the accidents I pass every day during rush hour are front-​rear fender benders — one person not paying attention/​following too close/​erratically merging, and hitting the person in front of them.
More frustration at the one-​lane off-​ramps onto the Bush Turnpike and 635, as well as the idiots who cut over from the left-​most lane at the last minute to try and merge onto the off ramp (cutting all of the responsible drivers who merged 2 miles previously).
I give 3 stars because before 7:30AM, between 1−3PM and after 7:00PM the tollway is amazing, and worth the moderately ridiculous tolls.

I will admit I am not at all the biggest fan of NTTA (actually I’m on the line with them right now waiting to talk with a representative… I’ve been waiting a good 15 minutes. boo) but I do utilize the DNT often, especially on the weekends. During the week it can be a bit of a cluster as everyone takes it to get to work. I’m thankful my commute nowadays is nowhere near that entire area. But otherwise… it’s easy quick and fast… and safer! Definitely put it to good use and avoid ridiculous 635 right now if you can. That highway I tell ya gives me road rage.

Other reviews are right: you’re better off walking during rush hour.
But I don’t use the Dallas North Tollway during rush hour, and thus my experience with this tollway has been fantastic!
Cashless, so no one has to stop when at toll booths. Huzzah!

NTTA really takes care of their road, keepin’ it in top shape. They salt it immediately when it becomes iced (because that happens so often), they repair the potholes, and they prolly do a whole bunch of other stuff to keep it nice & drivable that I don’t even think about because it has never become an irritating problem!

It’s a toll road.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought an express toll road was designed for people who need to travel quickly during rush hour and are willing to pay to do so. Why is the DNT a parking lot during rush hour? Is it a design flaw? Other toll roads in DFW seem to be handling rush hour traffic so much better while the DNT is just gridlock.

After driving on the tollway for a few months commuting to work and back, encountering 15 mph drives for most of my leg, and getting a little annoyed that I’m paying for what is essentially a glorified parking lot, I did some google maps analysis to see whether there are alternatives for my trips. Not too surprising, the tollway is the fastest route for where I’m heading, but only by a factor of ten minutes or so. Thinking it is a little steep to pay the prices I’m paying to shave off this amount of time each trip, I tried some alternate routes to and from, timing myself and seeing what the commute is like.
However, when you factor in accidents, lane closures, cars on the not-​so-​wide shoulders, the commute can easily be a good ten to fifteen minutes more than going locally or on 75.
The worst congestion on the tollway inbound is where the Bush ramp enters, and anything north of 635 is fair game. Outbound, it is similar where once you pass 635, a wave of congestion hits and you don’t escape until you are close to Bush. Now with it extending to Frisco (and possibly the southern border of Oklahoma), three hilly and curvy lanes of a «tollroad» is not enough to support the onslaught of commuters living in the north.
Speaking of the curves and hills, it neccessitates slowing down every minute or so when you encounter them, and when a not so vigilant driver slams on their brakes in front of you, it causes a ripple effect of braking here and there when there really shouldn’t be people braking so hard in the first place. I blame the drivers who love to cut into lanes with no regard to the amount of space there is between the cars.
By the end of my experimentation of different routes, I’ve decided to forego the tollway altogether unless I’m in a rush. With those prices, I don’t miss it one bit.

I’ve had a tolltag for about 7 years now and recently received a ZipCash invoice for $ 7.24 from October and November. When I called NTTA to settle it, I was told that there were additional invoices. I could only see one other online for 17 other transactions whereas the representative was stating 36 transactions! He would only waive the administrative fee because there is only a «one time courtesy» per contract. Personally, I think this is ridiculous! I have been a customer for years and I pay my bills. However, I will not pay $ 83 for what I see is $ 23.75 at 19 scans at $ 1.25 (which is being generous). One courtesy per contract? Out of control.

I drive this pretty much daily. I do get tired of the tolls going up. Aren’t we paying for the toll roads to be built? Is this like LBJ, where construction will last for the rest of my natural life? I’ve been here for over 30 years and THAT road is still being built!

What a rip off! I have had a tolltag account for nearly 15 years and yet periodically get zipcash invoices. NTTA refuses to reduce the zipcash invoices to tolltag rates for their longstanding customers regardless of the circumstances. The first time my credit card was expired for three days until I updated it. With four vehicles in the household, the zipcash cost for those three days were pretty expensive. I just received another zipcash invoice from October for my temporary plates on the new vehicle. I waited for 30mins on the phone waiting for a rep. Although I transferred the tolltag the night I purchased my vehicle, I’m still having to shell our money at the zipcash rate. The rep explained that the readers do not always read and, by me not updating my online info using the temporary plates, I am left with a zipcash invoice. NTTA sucks!

After waiting on hold for 40 minutes, I learned that if you try and do the right thing, and pay everything on your bill… you will still be penalized by 220% for things that are not on your bill.
I paid plenty at the beginning of this month. I went ahead and made a deposit to get a Tolltag. Last week, I received a penalty notice for not paying when I used the tollroad three months ago. It wasn’t on my invoice and they refuse to deduct it from my Tolltag deposit.
If you make it impossible for people to do the right thing, then what do you want people to do?

Are we seriously reviewing a… road? Really? Even more shocking, this is my 300^th review on Unilocal.I’ll never feel guilty about reviewing Walgreens or 7 – 11 again. :)
Most of what needs to be said has probably already been said — it’s a great stretch of road, especially now that the cashless tolling is in full force. I especially like the sections that are paved with good ol’ asphalt; they are so quiet to drive on compared to those loud-​assed concrete sections. Yeah, I’m not thrilled about the rates, either, but it’s just so convenient, how can you not take the tollway.
One item of interest: Let your Tolltag balance go negative, and you’ll start getting ZipCash notices (as if you didn’t have a TollTag). If you’ll make a payment at that point, and call customer service, they’ll bill your TollTag account and even give you the tag discount retroactively. A nice touch indeed.
If you’re a Dallasite, particularly with travel needs to the north and south, this is where it’s at. Suck it up and pay up, because there’s just no better way to get there.

First off, a message to those people who do not have a toll tag: «Please go get a toll tag!» You slow the rest of us down when you decide at the last minute that you need to merge over to the cash lane.
For those paying cash, odds are that you knew that you might hit the tollway on this day. Why do you fail to have cash or change handy? Why do you make everyone else wait as you dig through your ashtray or purse looking for change?
I’m on the tollway at least twice a day. Overall the traffic flow is pretty steady as long as there isn’t a wreck. As long as you listen to the traffic reports when you’re driving in the morning, you should be able to avoid any backups.
It sucks having to pay to be on this road, but at least it helps to filter out some cars from taking this route. Outside of the rates, I wish there was a way to keep the bad drivers off the road when it rains or freezes over. Bad weather = a bad drive on the tollway.

You gotta take the tollway and you gotta have a tolltag if you live in Dallas. in my opinion it’s the best way to get from the south to the north and vice versa. 75 is a traffic nightmare ALWAYS and 35 is a death trap! The tollway is always running pretty smoothly and it’s not often you get stuck in a huge huge jam. Just be careful around beltline at 5 expect some slowness cause people are merging to get into toll lanes. This hopefully should be fixed when they complete the project of removing all tollbooths supposedly sometime next year. I have lived all over Dallas and I have always driven this way. Plus they just raised the speed limit and theres hardly ever cops;)

The Dallas North Tollway is like a gated community for commuters. We get to sneer at the great unwashed who can only dream of one day traversing its golden byways. OK, not really, but it is a nice step up from the filthy, badly-​in-​need-​of-​repair experience we all have on the rest of DFW’s highways. 635 feels like something out of Mad Max these days. DNT is a welcome break.
Sure, there are inconvenient bottlenecks. For the life of me, I can’t figure why the DNT and George Bush interchange involves access ramps that are ONE LANE. Seriously? It’s like trying to flow the Mississippi through your WaterPik. There are going to be problems with, you know, VOLUME.
Nonetheless, I love the cashless system. I pity those still scrounging for change. I love the well-​maintained road. When I drive Central Expressway instead, I have to admit that I feel… dirty.

Damn you Dallas North Tollway! I want to give you five stars SOOOOO badly. I’ve been riding your pleasant roads since I was a child.
I always loved riding down the toll road with my dad on a fun adventure to downtown Dallas or Reunion Arena to catch a Stars game.
But then you had to go and get squirrely. What is this new EZ pass crap? I can’t pay with cash now? You’re gonna bill me? What!!!
And now you’re in the process of ripping out those stop lights that told you with a yellow light when you need to reload your toll tag. Why?! So you can con me into automatic deduction from my bank account? Fuck you NTTA. Greedy a-​holes.

Yes, your rates suck. But that’s what keeps the crazies off this road. And yes, when there’s an accident you’ll get backed up forever. But at least if you’re the one involved in the accident, there’s a much higher chance of the other car being insured. Travel on 35 and you’ll see what i mean.
It’s well-​kept, clean, never loaded with construction cones and overall fairly safe. And as for traffic? SO much better than other roads. I can get from Uptown to Addison in 10 minutes at 9am. That route would take at least 20 if you use 75.
I’ll keep paying those tolls if it gets me there quicker and safer. Just try not to jack them very often, eh?

Dallas North Tollway I have a real like/​hate relationship with you. It’s mostly a hate relationship!!! It took me almost 60 minutes to travel approximately 12 miles today. I know you’ll tell me it’s not your fault that people have accidents on you. But you know what? I’ve heard that excuse before. In fact, I just heard it last week and the week before that as well!!! Why can’t you be more like your sister, The Bush!!! Everybody loves her!!! Including me!!! That’s right I said it! I love The Bush!!!
