Love, love, love this fitness and rehab opportunity for cancer patients. If you have ever had cancer, and your dr approves, you have access to the wonderful gyms and trainers at FitSteps.
I attend the FitSteps in the Sammons Cancer Center at Baylor Dallas. I came after most chemo infusions and all radiation sessions. I just do a quick change into my gym clothes and sneakers, and I’m good to go.
The first session, Kathy just took down a lot of info and walked me around to all the different equipment and stretching tools. At first, I could participate in everything. After surgery I was limited to just «range of motion» exercises for my arm. And now I’m back to being able to do a bit of walking on the treadmill and riding the stationary bike.
This is not like a regular fitness center, more like physical therapy. Kathy and Greg do not push beyond your limits, they are physiology professionals, and they give tons of individual attention. The gym is hyper clean and never crowded. Keep in mind this is a cancer gym; some patients come in still attached to their IV poles, many people are still bald, and everyone is very supportive of each other.
In addition to the open gym, 9 – 5, I’ve also participated in an easy yoga class, a beginners exercise class, and of course my stretching.
If you’re going through treatment and want to maintain your energy levels or gain back your posture and stamina, I highly recommend this excellent FREE service for cancer patients! It’s tucked away in the Outpatient Oncology Clinic on the 2^nd floor, so just ask any of the patient navigators for directions. I’ll keep coming here for as long as I can!
