Rock and Roll Tacos

Delicious spicy tacos available.
They were at a sustainability event I attended in Deep Ellum, and would highly recommend them to try whenever you see them or hire them to feed your event.

While I’ve been on a bit of a breakfast taco kick recently, I got a craving for the dinner variety the other night, and decided to stop by the Rock and Roll Taco truck that was parked in front of Sprouts on Henderson. It wasn’t bad, but it fell short of some of my favorites in the area.
Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere?
It’s a food truck, so you can’t really expect an unforgettable atmosphere, but the staff were quick and friendly even though it was a cold and dreary evening in Dallas. No complaints. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
Taco truck food comes at a premium these days, so I didn’t even bat an eyelash when I saw that tacos were $ 2.50 each. That wasn’t disappointing, but the size of the tacos was. Take a look at the pic:
Now, those are pretty damn small, especially when you compare them to something like the Kimchi Tacos at the Ssahm Truck:
($ 3.00) or Fuel City’s tacos that only come in at $ 1.50 each:
. Rock and Roll walks a thin line here, but it’s not quite enough for me to dock them here, especially because the $ 3.00 Spicy Mac and Cheese had a generous portion. Single Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
We’ve got a tale of two menu items here folks. First and foremost, my carnitas tacos were pretty mediocre. While the tortillas appeared to be homemade, they tasted a bit bland, and the carnitas relied heavily on the toppings for flavor. The spicy mac and cheese, however, saved the day. Sure, it didn’t seem like anything more than some blue box macaroni with cheese and some paprika, but it was damn good. Single Star Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
Velvet Taco is still without question my favorite taco place in Dallas, and there are some Taco Trucks (Easy Sliders, Gandolfo’s, etc.) that I prefer as well. That being the case, no star here. No Star Granted.

Food truck review (³⁄₂₉ truck stop in Farmers Branch):
Not bad, but not great. Chicken tacos were average-​to-​dry, nothing to write home about. Chili verde pork tacos had a little more personality, herby and oniony, with a refreshing lime finish. Spicy mac and cheese had a sharp kick with some smokey undertones and a burn that built with each bite; however it was more of a pasta salad rather than a cheesy pasta.
Truck options limited to beef, pork and chicken tacos and some easy-​on-​the-​go snack/​appetizer options. Prices for tacos were too steep ($ 2.50 per taco – given the proximity of Little Mexico taco shops in the Farmers Branch/​Carrollton area) but I guess you pay for the on-​your-​doorstep convenience and a little rock-​n-​roll music to go with your food.

I rounded up a group of friends to go to La Grange for bunch one Saturday because I read about their great mimosa deal. When we got there, we were told La Grange was no longer open for brunch but Rock and Roll tacos was an extension of it, and they were serving brunch. We figured it would be the same deals since according to them «it was basically the same place». We found out fast it wasn’t when we ordered a round of mimosas that came out in 4 ounce plastic solo cups. Pure OJ. When we asked for more champagne, we were told they ran out and would have to go get more. Bust.
As for the food, it was okay. Some peoples’ was definitely better than others, but nothing really impressed us. I had the tropical salad, which was just okay. Anyone could make it. My friends that got the breakfast tacos liked theirs the best.
The service was the worst part. Our waitress acted like we were the worst things to walk into the restaurant. She had a huge attitude which was really unappealing when you are just trying to ask questions and get to know a new restaurant.
Probably won’t be back. Which is a shame, because I keep trying to promote Deep Ellum joints to all my friends. But this one won’t make the list.

The had good tacos. Sadly they are no longer in business.

Mediocre food, woefully slow service.
Took us an hour to move 30 feet through their line. With three people working at an event of 500 plus people, it almost seemed like they were deliberately unprepared to serve us. At one point the cashier ignored the line for almost 20 minutes to work the kitchen.
I love food trucks but this one doesn’t seem to get the fact that food trucks are supposed to be somewhat quick.

I try to support and advocate for local restaurants, as they are usually far and away better than most chains, but there was nothing redeemable about my experience with the Rock and Roll food truck this afternoon.
The food, like the service, was bland, and the portion sizes would have been hilarious had I not paid $ 13 for everything. I don’t mind paying up for good food and good service, but when both of those aren’t remotely pleasing, small, bistro-​sized portions just add insult to injury. Perhaps the physical location is much better, but as I rarely venture to Deep Ellum, I won’t get the opportunity to find out.

We made a second visit to Rock and Roll this week to see if the drink situation had improved (I didn’t take James up on his offer of a free meal — thanks anyway though). We tried a few new tacos. My favorite is still the Barbacoa.
Anyway, you’re probably wondering about the drinks. Last time we couldn’t get drinks with the food and had to go to the bar and pay for drinks seperately. The bar didn’t have iced tea, so we ordered coke, and we were given Dr. Pepper, which we only discovered when we tasted our drinks.
This time we ended up with Dr. Pepper again but in a much more straighforward manner. We were able to buy our drinks along with the meal in one smooth transaction but the choices were limited to water or a can of Dr. Pepper. Let’s face it, if you eat at Rock and Roll, they’re going to give you a Dr. Pepper no matter what, but at least now they warn you up front that’s what you’ll get.
Despite not being a huge fan of DP, it was an improvement over the last visit. The tacos are tasty enough we’ll be back for more.

How did this place get only 3 stars, huh? When Shana S. invited us to join her here for brunch on Sunday we were like «Yeah sure, why not?» we dig Deep Ellum and almost never get there.
The atmosphere here was laid back. The people seriously strung out & tatted up. These are all pluses on a Sunday morning. No one cares what you look like or who you are. Everyone is there to relax, enjoy the wonderful live guitar player, and eat some seriously good food.
Our waitress was friendly, efficient, and just as strung as the rest of us. The menu, so simple even our 5-​year-​old could figure it out. All entrees $ 8.00. There was a nice selection of «aguas frescas» and hubbie Leo Z. and I ordered up watermelon as we waited for Shana S. to arrive.
Shana ordered the chilaquiles (which I wanted SO bad but the whole diet thing…), Leo ordered the potato pancakes, and I had the omlette, rock ‘n roll style. All our food came out fast, hot, and delicious!
By then, like around 1:00, the place was starting to fill up as people woke up and decided they wanted something to eat. We left around 1:45 and the place was buzzing! What a fun and delicious morning — I mean afternoon! We will definitely be back to this place! LOVE!

This review is for the food truck… if this is what one can expect, I won’t set foot in the shop.
I was hoping perhaps the cooks in the food truck were perhaps off their game last night but there are other reviews here saying what I am about to say.
They were out of carnitas just a couple of hours into the event. We ordered a couple of barbacoa tacos instead. They meat was dry and flavorless. I literally choked down one bite and handed it over to my buddy to finish.
We also ordered the spicy mac and cheese. Sounded intriguing. Big flop. It looked like cheap macaroni salad. The cheese sauce was bland and flavorless and watered down. Spice? Nope. I hate to toss food but one bite was enough and it went into the trash.
Other taco food trucks have sauces/​condiments out to add to your tacos. None here.
At least we know what truck to avoid at these events. I suggest you do the same.

Was heading to La Grange for adult snow-​cones, but they were closed and i was hungry so we ate here instead.
Tacos are small but they were packed with meat and are ok. Not the best tacos, but not bad either.
I ordered the Ceviche Tostada and it was bland and not good. I love Ceviche and was expecting this to taste citusy, salty and have a bunch of onions and cilantro. Instead, the ceviche tasted like bland meat… it was horrible. To make it palatable i asked for some of the juice from the stock and salted it down. Luckily I was starving so I just ate it.

this review is for their taco truck.
these are some of the worse tacos i’ve had in the dfw area. their meat is dry and overcooked and flavorless. their carnitas were not cooked properly. and their hot sauce lack any semblance of heat.

Fun vibe, decent tacos, friendly service. If you are already in or near Deep Ellum, it is worth a visit.

All of the sudden Dallas is having an influx of decent taco places, Rock and Roll is one of them. This food truck has taken over La Granges old restaurant space, and the tacos are fresh and affordable. Ceviche tostadas were $ 6 for three nice sized ones, that seemed a ridiculous good buy.
Casual space with a patio. Counter service.
Great value and a good chill atmosphere in Deep Ellum.
A few service kinks that go along with being a new small business, like forgetting napkins, and a dripping AC vent over the door of the mend restroom door, I overlooked since the food value and vibe was so good.

Amazing tacos! Especially the La Grange — Belgian waffle, fried chicken, bacon and syrup. Great food and great atmosphere. Would come back at any time.

I’ve been here twice in the last two weeks, and I have to say, this place has TONS of potential. First off, I like the concept. I dig the records all over the wall, the décor, and the LPs’ fashioned into lazy susans. The salsa bar is located inside the bed of an old pickup inside the restaurant, which is pretty creative!
I will say this about the tacos… much like normal street tacos, they are not big. the tortilla size is a little small. But man, can they pack those tortillas! My last two chicken chipotle tacos were nearly bursting with pulled chicken and salsa. I definitely liked them a lot. Not mindblowing, mind you, but pretty good. Make sure you do not miss the salsa bar… they have lots to try! They also have pretty good cilantro-​lime rice, IMO.
They do have a few kinks to work through. Apparently their LaGrange taco (basically a chicken-​bacon-​waffle sandwich, more than a taco) has been very popular, but my boyfriend, another friend, and I were not impressed that they ran out of their raspberry sauce that they served it with the first time we went. We suggested that they really need to have some other option, like maple syrup. The sauce they gave after running out tasted terrible! Still, we will see how this place evolves, and I do plan on going back at some point to give them another try.

Checked these guys out on the Museum Food Truck lunch Fridays, If you are going to serve comically small tacos in Texas, they better be amazing — life changingly good. And these are somewhere between ok and good. I had the fish and beef fajita — litterally two bites for each taco. Had to go down to Nammi and get two more tacos (which are huge by the way). Skip it and go somewhere else.

I had 2 tacos from there for lunch today — chicken & fajita, both on corn tortillas. The chicken had a nice grilled flavor and over all was okay. The fresh tomato and onion and what i think is an avocado crema made it very refreshing. The fajita taco, I couldn’t finish. The meat had a weird sweet taste to it that I couldn’t really put my finger on, but didn’t set well with the palate. My friend tried a fish and a fajita, both on corn. she noticed the same strange sweet taste to the fajita meat, but the fish had good flavor. She said she would get the fish again, and I would try the fish and probably the chicken again. The green salsa was wonderfully hot and the red salsa has a delicious smoky/​sweet flavor with a kick.

I went to RnR for lunch today at the Dallas Arts District. It was a new-​to-​me food truck, so I thought I’d give it a try. I got the lunch special which includes rice, beans and chips with 2 tacos. I got the fish and the carnitas. The fish had a good flavor when I forked out a bite, but the double layer of tortilla overwhelmed the delicate flavors. Since the inner tortilla didn’t blow out, I stripped off the outer shell and enjoyed a bit more balanced flavor. The carnitas seemed a bit bland even without the tortillas and I wanted to like them. The rice and beans were both pleasant and better than expected. The chips were freshly fried, although a little on the sturdy side being made from the same tortillas as the tacos.

Awesome tacos and great service. 100% Authentic… Check this place out if you want great food!
