Rockit Lab Studios

I’ve been coming to this studio for almost 2 years now and overall have had a great experience. I’ll try to break this down to an easy to read format:
With every good place there usually comes some negative so let me start with that:
–parking is limited. As are most places in downtown Dallas, Rockit Lab is no different you can usually fit 4 to 5 vehicles in front of the building, otherwise pull in to the garage entrance, unload, and park along the side street.
–the large rehearsal /​photo room is great and the main Studio is great. However the 2^nd photo room as mentioned in other comments is less than ideal, but it’s good in a pinch and better there than wasted space. If you’re looking for privacy and best conditions wait until you can book the main room.
–the studio has good ac /​heating however if you go when it’s storming (I mean heavy, is it about to flood the streets, rain, not just sprinkling or light showers) prepare to get dripped on. Lots of small leaks under severe weather.
Now for the good
–easily the most reasonable rates and management I’ve found in Dallas. Chris runs a great staff and keeps the place nice.
–if you’re in a band, they supply a PA and small mixer. Mic stands and a couple of mics. Drum rug. Decent seating for groupies. Cables and power strips. I’ve been places that you needed to bring everything so the convenience is outstanding. If you need something else just ask a staff member. They won’t have everything but they’re always wanting to help if they can
–they supply backdrop and have many high quality umbrella lights to use for pictures. They have a dressing /​makeup room too.
–full kitchen with machines for food and drinks.
–great place to record as well. The main studio is perfect to come lay down some tracks. Updated computers with protools. Professional mixing board, etc.
–great place to network. Ive met some really interesting and talented artists here and made some great friends along the way. This can happen anywhere obviously but rockit lab really has a family feel to it and everyone seems to have a really high level of respect for one another here.
I honestly can’t recommend this place enough to others. If you’re looking for a place in Dallas to practice for your band. Record some music or shoot some photos and not break the bank. Look no further.

The staff is great, and they’re always willing to help. The hours of operation are actually a great selling point, the placard on the window says they are open until 2 AM. I used the «front» studio with the seemless backdrop. It was an adequate studio but with 3 light stands and umbrellas it was a little cramped.
The parking can be confusing, it’s actually just on-​street parking, however the studio is far enough from the Deep Ellum bars that you can usually find a spot. There is a parking lot behind the building but BEWARE, THE LOT IS FOR THE APARTMENT BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET.

I am a traveling photographer and had the opportunity to use Rockit Lab Studios earlier this year. It was a great experience for the Client and I. I was able to use their seamless paper backdrop, and produce great images for my client. I will use this studio every time I am in the dallas area!

I’m an amateur photographer and have used this studio on several occasions. I like the ease of use and no judgement and that’s what you get here. Photography is not their main deal but the studio works for me. Easy to schedule, very reasonably priced with an easy cancellation policy. Staff is easy to work with so you can just go in and do your thing. I was warned about the parking however, I have never had an issue. On one shoot, I brought in three models at the same time, and each of them found parking right away. I think it’s a matter of perspective and from my perspective, parking isn’t that difficult. Especially based on the fact that if you can’t find street parking, there is a lot that is one block away.
I have used other studios in Dallas (the fancy ones) but most times I just want me, my camera the model and a space to shoot. Rockit Lab works for me. I like the Deep Ellum location as well as the fact that you can shoot at anytime of day or night. In time they may consider updating their lighting, however because the lighting usage is included in the rental, far be it from me to complain. I really like this spot and my models have all said the same.

First of all, unlike what the website says, there is no «amble parking» — there’s one side of a short street with maybe room for three cars. It’s also a pain to load equipment through two tiny doors at a 90 degree angle.
Now, I can only review this from the photography side. It is completely worthless– — it wasn’t even a real room, it was just one side of a kitchen hallway area. There were people walking through it, no privacy in the least, and lights from kitchen and hallway could not be blocked out. Essentially, you can’t do any lighting that doesn’t involve the fluorescent lights in the building.
Thank God I did not take a real client here, and tested it out first, so now I know better. It’s pretty sketchy. Hopefully this warning helps save other people from wasting time and money.

I know that this place is primarily a sound recording place and rehearsal space, which is fine, I’m sure they’re great for that. But I was hired to do a photo shoot here of a model, and I can only review it as a photo studio since they have recently expanded their business into the ‘photography studio’ side of things.
As a studio, the space is limited. It’s in a good area, centrally located in Deep Ellum, but can be a little difficult to find if you aren’t familiar with the area and parking is limited. The day that I arrived, the owner/​manager didn’t seem to be on the premises but there were other people hanging out in a rehearsal room in the back of the space. My model, MUAH and I got there and set up with no one approaching to ask if we needed anything, etc. We had to find everything ourselves. Some of the electric sockets in the ‘shooting’ room were loose or dead, and there were no extension cords or stingers available (unless they were elsewhere but since no one was there to assist us I’m not sure about this). The room itself was nothing special, a big brick room with a backdrop and a black rug. The room has a wall of windows that directly face the white backdrop, and there is no blackout curtain or screen available, just mini blinds and flimsy gauze curtains that don’t do much to block out the natural light. The rug was also really dirty and clearly hadn’t been vacuumed in awhile, which meant every piece of dust or dirt was going to show up on camera. We had to ‘pick up’ the area before we could shoot; there were Bud Light bottle caps strewn around the room as well as random dirt from people’s shoes.
The price is great and the owner seemed flexible and nice via text, so the studio is one I would use again— just can’t say my overall experience was a great first impression.

In Dallas I use a lot of hourly rehearsal studios for various bands I play for.
Booking the rehearsal space can be done over the phone or online. The rates are cheaper than any other space I’ve come across. The room isn’t just a large room but it also comes with a few rugs for the drummer and a P.A. System so you don’t have to tote yours in and set up.
The only downside is the parking. It’s a tad limited since it’s also close to sons of Herman hall which would be very difficult to park if they have an event going on.
