Summit Climbing Yoga & Fitness

Great Workout! Love the Women’s 50% off night –Friday. My friends said they will try it again next month. A lot has changed since my last visit about 6 yrs ago. They now have climbing shoes, which is awesome. I which they had climbing gloves because our palms were burning and we had no powder so we got some serious blisters. In addition, I got a rock burn on my elbow. I guess I came down or went up wrong. The courses are very challenging but fun. Can’t wait for the next one.

The gym is fine the staff are rude. My 6 year old daughter wanted to go rock climbing for her birthday. I took her and two friends. When we got there the staff was very rude from the beginning. I paid for the kids and asked for a harness for me so I could belay for the kids. They happily took my money. They gave the kids their harness and handed me a harness much too small. When I asked for a larger one he said we don’t have one. I said I have belayed here before and the staff replied very loudly with «did you not hear what I just said we don’t have one your size they are all out.» I am a bigger girl a size 18 – 20 but really there are lots of people my size and larger who use the gym. Maybe get some more or tell me you don’t have one before I pay or even just be polite no offer to bring me one as soon as you get one back. They were also very rude to a young girl who accidentally let go of the rope on an auto belay and refused to fix the situation further limiting the options for my daughter and her friends.

Only been here for yoga, so it’s a yoga review! I love the color and set up of the yoga studio. Simple and easy to get and out, and a calm chill vibe– I expected it to be more «athletic» yoga as its part of a climbing gym, but it’s not. Shoshana is my favorite instructor. :)

As soon as I walked in, the staff was super nice. They complimented how they didn’t even have to ask me to sign the waiver first, haha.
They gave me a quick tour, and even offered to teach my friend to belay– how sweet.
I ended up just bouldering the entire time. I loved all the different style walls and routes. It wasn’t too crowded and there were no crazy kids running around. I didn’t get to see the second floor, but it looked amazing from downstairs. The crash pads were pretty clean. The holds could use cleaning, but I don’t know how long it has been since their last strip down. I had to wash my hands every couple of climbs because they turned black, haha. Not a big deal.
I really want to come here again! Hopefully I visit Dallas again soon.
My only complaint– the rental shoes were really, really burnt/​bent out. Next time I will pack my own pair.

I went to a climbing gym with friends in Bethesda, Maryland, while visiting over the Christmas break. I loved it! When I came home, I looked into local climbing gyms and saw this one. I bought punch card (day passes) so I could check it out. I wanted to go to he Climbing 101 class. I went last weekend, and the class was full. They were really rude to me and not helpful at all. I wanted someone to show me the club and the auto belays, but no. I thought maybe since I bought punch card day passes, that was why they treated me rudely since I didn’t buy a full membership.
Then I signed up for the Climbing 101 class that was today. I couldn’t use my punch card pass to sign up for the class online, so I paid for another day pass just so I could sign up for the class online in advance since it had been full last Saturday when I went. The class starts at 11:00. Technically they only let members in before 11:00. I went a bit early just to get my equipment, get signed in, and change clothes prior to the 11:00 a. m class. They told me they couldn’t let me in before 11 am since I was on a day pass and not a member. I wasn’t wanting in to climb before 11 — just wanted to change clothes so I wouldn’t be late to the class, but I stood to the side and was waiting. A young guy came in and said he wanted to go to the Climbing 101 class too. He bought a day pass, and they let him right on in while I stood there not allowed to go in even though we were in the exact same situation.
I won’t go back there. They have been rude to me the only two times I went. I hope the Carrollton, Denton or Grapevine locations are more polite and kind to older climbers.
I had thought it was that I was on day passes, except they were really nice to the young guy on the day passes. I think it must be my age or something. I don’t know. But, twice they were really rude to me.
I just want to climb. Anyone know a good climbing gym with employees who could understand an older climber just wanting to climb?

Came here for a yin yoga class and I really enjoyed it. My only complaint was that the room was heated.
I have a pretty hot constitution and can’t handle stagnant, hot air. Other than that, it was great!

New policies are exploitative– I was a member for 2 years, and I had to put my membership on hold. I was informed that (as of a policy change 2 mo ago) I’d be charged $ 8/​mo for the privilege of NOT climbing. My response: Let’s cancel my membership then. Then I was informed of another policy: You have to cancel your membership in person.
Now I have to make the pain-​in-​the-​butt drive out to a Summit location to cancel a membership I can’t justify because I haven’t been able to make the pain-​in-​the-​butt drive regularly enough.
Is that even legal?

Went in for a late night climb and we had so much fun! Not sure what it’s like during the daytime, but it wasn’t too crowded although there was a good amount of people by each wall.
Staff is very friendly and gave us a little safety overview since it was our first time at the gym. For a beginner like myself, the walls were pretty challenging and I like how they varied in the amount of tilt compared to the floor. I like how they played Backstreet Boys’ «Bye bye bye» when it was time for everyone to leave (gym closes on the dot at 10pm).
If you’re into bouldering, check out the wall closest to the rope climbing. There’s a cool one that has a path you can follow back and forth with numbers labeled on each rock. Can’t wait to come back and explore different paths :)

Came here around 2pm on a Saturday and it was super packed. We came inside wanting to rock climb and asked for the rate and it was $ 21.65. I thought it was on the expensive side and didn’t think it was worth it because it was too crowded and the place wasn’t big enough. We walked out and tried the one in Carrollton.

I cannot say enough great things about this gym. The staff members are completely helpful and patient in helping you become a better climber, belayer, or yogi. They offer everything to help you become a better YOU. Since becoming a member a year and a half ago, I have lost 35lbs. I’m 5’3 and a WOman. I have done this thru their low cost membership fee that comes with UNLIMITED yoga. I literally have” yoga’ed” My ass off. If you are new to the Dallas area and wanna make friends in a healthy positive way, I highly recommend this spot. Even if you are a beginner, everyone is helpful in giving tips. I have made the best of friends just by becoming a member. I can go on and on, but I think you get how happy I am with them. There’s nothing better than the quality of life that beats hard in this gym. Thank you to all the staff members and the owners. You all have changed My life.

A bit overwhelming atmosphere at first for amateurs but very good patient instructors. Enjoyed the whole two hours for only $ 10. This is a very clean environment with many challenging courses. Anyone is welcome and will enjoy, highly recommend!

For Texas standards, not bad. The gym is pretty big with the first floor mostly dedicated to bouldering.
For my standards, this gym lacks. The holds are placed on a wooden wall and tape is placed to map out the route. First of all, the wooden walls are slippery as hell so smearing the wall is impossible. Second, it’s not realistic to real rock outside! Upgrade the wooden walls.
Some areas have more cushion so when you jump down, it’s not so bad on your knees. Other areas have barely any cushion.
I must be very spoiled with my rock climbing gym (thank you baby Jesus) and so I wasn’t so impressed with this one.
The routes are pretty good though and make you think.

While I working in Dallas, I was introduced to climbing though this gym, and I am hooked, the staff here are great Ben Manny, Adam And Chris and I know I am missing a few, but they were all helpful and great. The facilities it self are superb.
if I am in Dallas again will definatly be back thanks

My favorite climbing gym in the area. No other local gym compares as far as bouldering goes. «Big Tex» is an awesome wall, as well as the new highball wall they just built. Decent top rope walls, and the lead area looks cool (though I haven’t done it yet). The training area upstairs is top-​notch as well, featuring hangboards, rice buckets and even a wall where you can adjust the angle. The gym gets a bit crowded at times, but for good reason.
I do wish the walls would have more naturals/​texture to them, as they are pretty much straight plywood. Regardless, every other aspect of the gym makes up for this.
I should also add that this is probably the least beginner/​birthday party-​friendly gym in the metroplex. Not only due to the focus on bouldering, but also due to a lack of unmarked juggy holds on the top-​rope walls. Despite this, the gym does seem to do well with groups and birthday parties.

My dad has recently lost quite a bit of weight, so he’s trying every physical activity he can find in the Dallas area. I told him that rock climbing sounded fun, so when I came home to visit for the holidays, we went to the Summit and climbed some walls.
This is the Dallas location, I think. It’s not beginner friendly, but the challenge was welcome. Their orientation was brief, but helpful. There were children, literally, everywhere — like little monkeys climbing on everything. There’s about a 12 foot wide 2 story area for beginners and the rest of the place was not even in the realm of possibilities for our first time.
The auto-​belay system was pretty terrifying to try, but very cool. We liked how we could spend all day there if we wanted.
After I came back to NY, he tried to take some of his weight loss friends with him to climb, but they were having an event. Hopefully, they can try again when the place isn’t closed.
I would definitely go back. I had a great time. I’d have to try it out a couple more times before I can give it 5 stars. It only loses a star because there seemed to be no order with the kids literally everywhere. I’m not even exaggerating, it was like ants on sidewalk food.

For those unfamiliar, Summit Climbing has 3 locations: Grapevine, Carrollton (formerly Exposure) and Dallas (formerly Dallas Rocks or D-​Rocks). I usually visit the Carrollton location, but sometimes their routes get stale and I’ll visit the Dallas location.
The top rope walls here are definitely taller and there are plenty of routes. The bouldering scene is also bigger since they have half the gym dedicated to it. I don’t think it’s as beginner friendly as the other locations, since the «easier» routes I’ve tried have been significantly harder than equivalent routes at the other gyms. The wall is also smoother making it harder to use it as leverage on the climb (and it’s not as realistic).
The air in the gym is also a bit staler, if that’s a concern for you. Overall I prefer it as an accessory gym when the routes at the others get old, but it’s not a bad climbing gym. Plus, now that all 3 are under the same brand, the memberships are valid across all the locations.

The closest Summit location to me is the Grapevine one. I have had really great experiences each time I visited that one. I have a membership, so I go quite frequently. The staff there are always incredibly warm welcoming and down to earth. They are really great at making guests feel comfortable. They go above and beyond.
Naturally, I wanted to check out the Dallas location. I wanted to see their walls and what they had to offer.
We walked in and the guy at the desk was insanely RUDE. There was no «hello» or «what’s up guys». He just pointed to the scanner and turned around and walked away. SO off putting and such a turn off. He didn’t ask us if we wanted gear/​shoes/​etc. He just had a really annoying attitude and he made the whole trip there a complete WASTE. Made us feel like we were bothering him when we finally asked for our gear. The dude was just a complete asshole.
I drove over an hour from Grapevine to Dallas, sat in traffic, totally stoked to be trying out new routes and walls, but the service I got when I arrived totally killed the experience for me.
I will not be back to this location and I hate to be that person, but the way we were treated there was completely unnecessary.
As for the walls and bouldering, I feel like the autobelay walls leave much to be desired. I think there’s only like 5 possible walls to climb if you’re not belay certified which is good and bad depending at which end you’re on.
If you’re going to go to a Summit gym, I HIGHLY recommend the Grapevine location. Alex at the desk in the afternoons is the best. Down to earth and chill as hell.

Took my 7-​yr-​old son, hoping for a chance for us both to be able to climb, and that’s exactly what we got. The Staff’s top priority is safety, and they are also active, helping customers at the walls… not just there to chit chat with each other behind the front counter.
The equipment rental included climbing shoes, which was a nice surprise. Also, there were 3 climbing options for my son… belaying, auto-​belaying, and beginner bouldering. I was initially worried I wouldn’t get to do much, but with the 3 options, he could auto-​belay on one route while I auto-​belayed next to him at another station. All three climbing options were explained to us at the beginning by the staff, with safety as the top priority in how and when to connect the hooks to your harness and how to communicate to your partner when you’re ready to start climbing.
We spent 3 hours there on a Saturday, and my son has not stopped talking about it. My arms and fingers are sore, because climbing is a great workout.
Gear job Summit Dallas!

I don’t even want to review this place because it’s my own little slice of heaven and I selfishly want to keep it all to myself. That’s not fair to the fabulous staff at Summit, though. In addition to top rope, lead climb (must be certified), and bouldering, Summit offers a variety of included-​in-​membership yoga classes, opposition class to work the muscles you use least in climbing, and a ridiculously hard abs class that I absolutely despise because I’m out of shape. Ben leads that though, and he’s amazing.
For $ 50/​month, you get your gym membership. With $ 150, to get chalk bag, painfully uncomfortable climbing shoes (aren’t they all?), and a belt. That also includes that month’s membership fee. Totally worth it to not stuff your feet into used-​by-​100-​people shoes.
My only complaint is the Team Texas kiddos, and certainly not all of them. They will absolutely cut right in front of you time in and time out and not even realize you’re standing by waiting to do a problem. And I don’t mean a wall where the team is clearly practicing. They pay good money for their team practice, etc, and no one should have an issue leaving them be for their actual practice. It’s when they’re out on their own (again, not ALL) that they’ll jump onto the wall without paying attention. It gets pretty frustrating that there doesn’t seem to be any eduction about etiquette on waiting one’s turn for a wall. I’ve literally given up and moved to a different wall before.
That was a long rant about a minor issue at a place I would literally be at 7 days a week and twice on Sundays if I could. The staff are amazing, the fellow climbers are happy to help you route, and we love cheering for each other. Plus, it is an amazing upper body workout without doing weight reps. My arms have literally changed shape in the 4 months I’ve been going. Check it out!

I came here for the first time on Friday and here are my thoughts. Keep in mind, I’m comparing from my experiences climbing in Colorado gyms.
BOULDERING
— Really tall walls
— Interesting, playful routes
— Need to remember to fall and roll onto your butt
— Still figuring out the ratings as they don’t seem to be what they would be in Colorado
— Watch out for people dropping down if you’re sitting in the middle watching the opposite side
TOP-​ROPING
— In my honest opinion, seems wayyy too easy to get belay certified. A bonus to new climbers, a negative if you aren’t safely belaying
— Also teaching method of belaying is an older version no longer taught in Colorado gyms
— Also, climbing lingo not taught such as (on belay, belay on, climbing, slack, take, or to tell person belaying to take rope when climber is done so they can adjust to descending)
— Climber clipping in rather than tying in prevents user error
— Use of grigri prevents user error in case of sudden drops instead of basic belay device
— Straight side-​by-​side routes decrease chances of others from swinging into climbers or descending onto people’s heads
— Not happy about seeing people belaying who have no idea what they’re doing (one girl was pulling the rope up to feed through the grigri instead of pulling down and jumping up and down to get help from gravity… She was also climbing with both her shoes untied)
— While girl above was belaying a guy, he fell and swung out, almost knocking me over where I was belaying :\.
— Routes are shorter than gyms in Colorado but makes up for it with tougher routes
— Learning to adjust to strange rating system which also doesn’t seem to match up route but could be a Colorado comparative thing
STAFF
— Very friendly and easy going
— I enjoyed their overhead announcements
So far, I’m personally interested in the techniques needed for the routes and would like to return to try more out. However, I’m worried about the safety of other climbers and allowing people to belay who are using poor techniques.
