I had been going to First Eye Care on 635 for the last few years, but after starting a job downtown, this location was an obvious choice. How lucky for me that simple convenience brought me to this excellent doctor!
He immediately made me feel at ease (new docs always make me nervous). Like others have said, he had a genuine interest in helping improve my vision. He also gave some great advice about a program I can use to adjust my monitors to a warmer temperature.
However, as others have cautioned, this was not a cheap visit. I have medical insurance, but no vision. For my new glasses (frames, lenses, and anti glare coating) I paid over $ 600. ($ 696 by the time I paid the $ 60 copay +$ 15 for the visual fields threshold test.
Price aside, this has by far been my best experience with an optometrist!

Dr. Weikum is one of the best eye doctors I have ever had the pleasure of seeing (no pun intended). He does way more than act friendly and tell you your new prescription. Under his care my eyes have improved dramatically. He has given me careful instructions as to how to care for my eyes, discussed with me how specific things I do, eat, or drink affect my vision, diagnosed long term issues for which we can prepare now, and explained to me carefully all of my options. I have had many good ODs over my lifetime, but he is by far the best.
Be prepared, however, to pay for the best. Purchasing a new set of lenses — not including frames, mind you — and contacts through his office run me approximately $ 1,000 a year. That’s in addition to the consultation.
Caveat aside, I have nothing negative to say about the service and skill of Dr. Weikum. You will not be unhappy with your decision to place your eyes in his capable hands.

Dr. Weikum is the best eye doctor I’ve seen (pardon the pun), and I’ve been going to eye docs for 40 years. He thoroughly and patiently explains his procedures, your eye health, changes in your vision, and any game plan to improve your eye health. Strongly recommend him. Will not go to anyone else as long as I can go to Dr. Weikum!

The highest quality optical care I’ve ever experienced. Dr. Weikum is excellent and explains each and every procedure with great care and with easily understood terms. His optical staff is attentive, kind and most welcoming. My family and I have been patients at this practice for 7 years. The absolute best possible care that will pamper your eyes, they will thank you! Super, excellent experience.

Wish Unilocal would remove posts from 2008. Our office addressed this patient nearly 6 years ago and the problem was solved. We now have a good relationship with this patient, but this post comes back every 2 or 3 years. It is very frustrating for our office.

I would not recommend this office under any circumstances. I was charged over $ 250 over three visits, merely to update my prescription (this does not include the purchase of any contact lenses or glasses).
I called the office for a new prescription, and was told it would only cost the amount of my copay, which is $ 35. I was then charged $ 180 on my first visit, and told that it was a required «cornea evaluation» for the state of Texas, though this was not mentioned over the phone.
I paid it, but was required to come back the next week because I was told that my cornea needed to heal before he could give me a prescription. I came back, and was required to pay another $ 35 copay. My vision was tested and I was given a pair of contacts to try. I told Dr. Weikum I would not be buying my contacts from him, and he said that he understood, and that this was just to test my vision with the contacts.
The contacts were horrible — I could not see at night, and could not read my computer when it was less than three feet away. I called the office, and they said it was not the prescription, but the contact, and that I needed to get another pair. I got another pair; again they did not work.
In the meantime, I received a bill for $ 38 at my home for a «contact fitting,» though Dr. Weikum had specifically told me I would not be charged for this.
I called the office and demanded an appointment so that I could get the correct prescription. I had to argue with the front desk to even get me in, and argue further in order to get a detailed receipt of the $ 180 so that I could submit it to my flexible spending plan (when I finally did receive the receipt, there was no mention of a cornea evaluation, only a $ 180 charge for a «contact eval»).
I finally went in, and this time brought in my old contacts, which were better than the two Dr. Weikum had prescribed. I was told that it was my fault for not bringing them in sooner, and that I could not expect him to give me a good pair of contacts without knowing what I was wearing first.
He told me my vision was ²⁰⁄₄₀ with my current contacts, and gave me a prescription for the SAME contacts with a slightly different strength (.25 higher in each eye). I was then told that I MUST pay the $ 38 since he had fitted me for contacts, even though neither of his contacts had worked.
The office was rude, and I was charged over $ 250 over the course of three visits to get a slightly different prescription in the same contact lens. I will never return to Dr. Weikum’s office, and I would certainly not recommend his office to others.
