Girl In the Curl Surf Shop

Just wanted to write a quick review to say how very friendly and helpful the owner of this store is! My sister and I came recently in looking for board rentals to surf nearby. I say «nearby» and not the name of a specific beach because when we arrived, we had no idea which beach we should go to. Within five minutes, she’d given us the low-​down on exactly where to go, checked the tide reports for us, told us what kind of waves we were in for that day, and even recommended we rent boards down at Doheny beach instead of from her because they’d be much easier for us to transport that way. Taking the time to help out a couple of out-​of-​towners even if it meant sending our business to someone else? All class. Thanks so much, Girl in the Curl!

Mary is an awesome ambassador of surfing, she has been teaching people to surf for her whole life, and is passionate about getting people into the sport.

Todd was super helpful! I took a lesson with him and then later had one of my friends come out and rent a board and he helped with my soft racks. Great customer service!

Mary and Todd are the best. They carry great gift ideas for my wife and other surfing necessities.

I am pretty upset with them as I had signed up my daughter for a week of camp. Unfortunately, I learned a couple of weeks before school started that my daughter’s school would be starting earlier than it had any other year and had to cancel her week of camp. There is a $ 100 fee for cancelling even with more than a week’s notice. I can understand some kind of fee, but $ 100 is very steep. I won’t be signing up with them again as there is clearly no forgiveness. Yes, they did offer me an options where they would keep 100% of my money and I could sign up my daughter for next year’s summer camp. But not going to risk that the cancellation fee becomes even more for something I may not be able to use next year. I am sure they are a great place, just very upset that were unable to either return more of my money or allow us to use for lessons on the weekends.

Need a quick gift for a girlfriend or young girl, this is the place. They even gift wrap for free. Friendly local people with a passion for surfing and teaching.

Girl in the Curl is awesome. We were down in Newport on vacation from Northern California. Our 6-​year olds took surf lessons, and it was easily one of the highlights of our trip. We stopped by the surf shop afterwards, and Todd gave my son a baseball cap from the store. Thanks again guys for running such a great business — hope to see you again in spring.

My 7 year old daughter just finished a full week of camp! Totally awesome she is surfing and I can sit on the beach and just watch now. Mary is fantastic with the kids! I would recommend to anyone!
When I asked my daughter who her favorite was each day her answer was always Mary!

We just did a family surf lesson with Mary and Todd on Mother’s Day and it was absolutely awesome. My son is 6 and Mary was just amazing with him. He got up repeatedly and loved it. My wife said it was an awesome Mother’s Day present and she had a great day. It was worth every penny. Highly, highly recommend!

Girl in the Curl is the most amazing surf shop and surf camp in the world! This is definitely a true surf camp where your kid actually learns how to surf and improves on their skills. This is not babysitting on the beach. If you want your kids to become real surfers, this is the place!!! Mary is clearly one of the best in the business. it’s so nice to see a woman surf school owner who knows what she is doing and does it well. The shop up on PCH is so much fun to visit as well. We were able to purchase unique treasures from the South Pacific as well as pick up some gifts for guests we had in town. My husband and girls thoroughly enjoyed our time at surf camp & the surf shop. Thanks for being a great inspiration to girls & boys of all ages! Girl in the Curl ROCKS!!!

My daughter has been going to Girl In The Curl surf camp for the past 3 summers and absolutely loves it! I found Mary, the owner, to be professional, genuine and kind. Mary has a gift for making each kid feel special and confident and my daughter can’t wait to go to surf camp next summer. AVOID! Especially the surf camp they offer. OMG, I’ve never seen someone
treat a customer so bad in my life. We paid for our daughter to take two weeks of surf lessons, decided to make it only one week and took a credit in their surf shop. We ordered a surf board that never came in, and when we talked to Mary (the owner) about it she was rude, condescending, and downright mean.
We went from thinking this place was great to scum of the earth. We will be burning the hat my daughter got from surf camp and will be spending our money at Jacks instead. The owner has clearly lost touch with customer service.

I don’t think I can ever go into this shop without having the urge to buy everything! Total surf chic. Best rates for surf lessons as well as equipment rentals! I took my first surf lesson with them, and I believe their passion for surfing is contagious! If you’re in the OC area, and surf inspired… do check them out… Mary and Todd are just awesome-​sauce!
P.S: They have the whackiest (in an awesome-​sause way) black vehicle… which they refer to as: «The Black Curl»… Genius!

I love Girl in the Curl for surf-​inspired jewelry for my teenaged niece. I’m happy to find that they offer surf camps for girls and am looking forward to treating my niece to surfing lessons this summer.

We love Girl in the Curl/​Boy in the Barrel Surf Camp. Mary has the best team of surf professionals who have a great love for kids, the environment, and the sport of Surf. Our son and daughter were catching waves on Day One and improved daily with the team’s encouragement. We highly recommend this camp and plan to send our kids each summer!

This amazing boutique has everything under the sun from killer (beautifully crafted) surfboards, leashes, wax, traction pads, swimsuits to a great selection of clothing for kids & adults. The jewelry= one of a kind and to die for!!! Cute home décor, stickers…
And the best part: SURF LESSONS & CAMPS for all ages lead/​taught by done of the most encouraging, positive, talented, beyond passionate & inspiring surfers whom have a lifetime of experience!!!

Cute little shop right on PCH! Lots of fun gifty stuff! A great place to grab a gift for a friend who likes the ocean– whether or not they surf!
I can’t wait for the economy to turn around so that they go back to carrying more clothes.(My favorite pink sweatshirt came from there!)

I am completely baffled… first person to review Girl in the Curl? Everyone knows this place. Have you ever driven north up PCH through Dana Point, and toward the end of downtown, looked to your right and seen Betty, the statuesque, bikini-​clad surfer girl posing out front as you pass? Of course you have!
I love this shop. It’s decorated so cute, very vintage beachy — aqua walls, fishing net, seashells, a treasure chest… almost as if you’re a mermaid swimming under the sea (or so I like to think).
The shop has all things girly and beachy all rolled in one: T’s, shorts, sweatshirts, bikinis, wetsuits, rash guards, boards, jewelry, hair accessories, shells, candles, picture frames, lip gloss, soaps, lotions and even license plate frames. My recent finds include a super cute zip-​up hoodie with pink, flowery decals on the front & back (made in the USA) and an adorable sputnik sea urchin scented candle, created by a local artist.
Mary, the store’s owner/​creator, is awesome. She’s super fun & friendly, provides great recs, and cares about her customers. You’ll often hear a, «Hey cutie, how are you doing?» as loyal customers come through the door, which she has many of, being in business for 14 years.
Along with the store, Girl in the Curl also offers surf lessons and a Surf Camp for girls (how cute is that??). Instructor Mary comes from a surf background, and used to surf competitively. Check out the huge van parked in their lot (behind the shop) with the cute pink logo — they are prepared.
