Tarrywile Park and Mansion

Our little piece of Paradise! I try to get there at least once a week. Tarrywile Park is very well maintained! I can not say enough about it. My fiancé will be getting married there can’t wait! Hats off to all who help to keep Tarrywile up an running! Thank You :)

As far as enjoying the outdoors in Danbury goes, this is certainly a 4 star spot. One of the pluses being that it is free and open to the public. There are various walking trails and some nice open grass pastures. It is neat to walk by the old mansion as a contrast to all the open space. And I believe that one can rent out the mansion for an event such as a wedding, I do remember a friend being married here several years ago anyhow.
For a fairly large city by CT standards, it is nice to have a place like this where one can enjoy some fresh air and get get a little bit of exercise as well.

I rented the mansion for a wedding. It was a perfect location for a June wedding. We had lawn games outside on the grass and everyone had fun!

Who would think this beautiful park is right in Danbury. Lots of hiking trails, picnic areas, and fascinating history. In fall the foliage is stunning. Definitely worth a visit.

Love to hike here with my husband. I think that this is the best place to hike in Danbury. There are a variety of trails that are well marked. The park is clean and I feel safe hiking with my husband.

The greatest trails on the east coast. I have been here several times and each time is a pleasure. They are clean and beautiful.
What’s great is that you have your choice of a relaxing walk or a vigorous workout. Enjoy the 4 seasons. It’s also a great place to take your dog. Recommended for anyone.

Decent park, I guess with trails. (maybe good in winter to x-​country?) We were expecting a lot more, I guess, based on the high reviews! Wouldn’t ever go alone… saw too many creepy people.

Love this place. Multiple different hikes from casual strolls to tough climbs. I love the abandoned castle. Pond loop is beautiful and easy.

Lovely park tucked away where you wouldn’t expect it. The hiking trails are a great work out with a decent view at the top. The trails themselves are really nice with a lot of variety. They are dog friendly and parking is easy. One bummer was that, for someone with some hiking experience but by no means an expert, I found that some of the trails weren’t well maintained and it was confusing to find my way back since the trail I was on (blue) was a circuit with no signs indicating which way the entrance was when you hit a fork in the road.

Love this place! Recently moved from Westchester, NY so I am used to talking the Rockefeller preserves and Old Croton Aqueduct trails. This place is great. Very clean, beautiful views, and well-​maintained trails. You can walk for hours or just for a little bit — as my dogs are getting older they can’t hike for hours anymore, so I usually just do the loop up near the lake and back. Lots of dog-​friendly people too — a nice change from Westchester!

I went for a lovely winter hike at Tarrywile with a Meetup group. It’s a very nice place with a variety of trails, so people of all fitness levels can enjoy the park. I didn’t have a chance to check out the mansion, but I’ve heard that it’s worth a look!

Great place for a hike or to take the dogs. They have both trails and a path around the green. Close to Danbury and so peaceful. It does get very busy in the summer so weekend in the spring and fall are best. You can even rent the building and have a party there

Great place to hike and just enjoy being outside. My wife works nearby and goes for a hike almost every day. A good place to walk your dog to remember to keep them on a leash.

Beautiful park. I love that there is a quiet corner anywhere I want to be here. If I stay in CT i’ll be visiting the grounds quite often. looking forward to seeing the koi pond on my next visit!

My favorite place for hiking in the area– so many trails to explore– and its definitely worth the climb up the hill to see the old tarrywile castle that is now run down– and some say haunted! Lot’s of wildlife– beautiful ponds… and dogs are not allowed off leash as a previous poster stated… This place is beautiful year round– and I believe you can even get a camping permit for one of the few sites they have. The orange trail is perfect for a stunning view of Danbury, the blue hooks up to the Ives trail, just so many! Get there!

Literally my most favorite park to visit. I have vested interest in this place. Hiking through these woods helped me lose over 200 lbs, along with a diet change.
Multiple trails, multiple lengths, and multiple options.
Peaceful, deer, animals, lovely bodies of water.

Beautiful hiking grounds! Come with your kids, your dog or just for a picnic in the field.

this is a great place to go for a day outdoors. Beautiful grounds, Miles of well marked and clear trails. Great for bird watching. Dogs allowed leashed

Tarrywile simply makes me happy. It’s a hidden gem and I’m almost afraid to tell people about it so it stays that way! It’s the best place in Danbury for a picnic — take lunch and a book with a blanket and you won’t want to leave! I can’t tell you how many times we’ve gone and found a new wonderful spot for a sammich and a snooze. GO! You won’t be sorry!

I cannot believe I am the first to Unilocal on Tarrywile Park. And I don’t even live in Danbury anymore. I’m Unilocaling from Austin, Texas. Actually, I was deep in thought on Austin’s best places to visit when for no apparent reason my mind drifted to Danbury, CT and I started to think about Danbury’s best place for locals and out-​of-​towners to visit. The answer came so easy. Tarrywile Park! I started missing Tarrywile Park so I went on Unilocal to read some sweet reviews of my favorite place in Danbury. I expected rows of 5 star ratings and multitudes of Tarrywile Park Unilocalers. Imagine my surprise when I saw that no one had written one review for the most fabulous place in Danbury. Perhaps it’s fate that this review is mine. I believe it is. Let me tell you about Tarrywile. A web page might tell you that Tarrywile is a park, with trails, and a mansion that people can tour or rent out for events. But Tarrywile is so much more, and even full of magic and charms. Follow one trail and you can see the remains of what was once a castle that a husband built for his wife. Follow another trail and you come to a lookout over downtown Danbury and Candlewood Lake in the distance. Stop and throw rocks at the water tower and you are officially at what is called «Alien Headquarters». Eat wild blackberries. Trail-​run or walk your dog around the pond then stop to talk to the other dog owners. Watch someone’s wedding in the field by the apple trees. Potluck with friends for a solstice or drum circle. For years, I would meet my friends at Tarrywile and we would spend hours hiking, wandering, drumming, treasure hunting, stargazing. Some of my best dates were at Tarrywile. I’m divorced now, but my ex-​husband and I officially started dating at Tarrywile… and it was still one of my favorite dates. In winter, Tarrywile has the perfect hill for sledding and the perfect flat spaces for making snow angels and snow people. I have an idea. Put a couple hours aside, skip the mall, and go to Tarrywile instead. Bring a friend, bring a camera, bring a child. Go exploring. Pee in the woods. Have fun.
