Dayton Grand Hotel

Wow where should I start. Ok here we go.
When booking online nothing was mentioned about renovation or changes.
When booking it showed a nice buffet style breakfast. And a bar/​lounge.
I asked about the breakfast. The clerk said only donuts and coffee. Another guest told me that they always say they are out of donuts and coffee in the morning. He was correct. When I went in the morning to get coffee, they said that they were out. Oh and to mention no bar/​lounge. The night I arrived the sink in my room did not drain. I went down stairs to get some hot water for some soup. No hot water. The clerk took me into the hotel kitchen where they had a microwave. Wow the kitchen was gross. So the clerk said that she would give me a room with a microwave. When I went to transfer my luggage to the new room I opened up the door and found it to be dirty. The bed was unmade and the room was full of beer cans. So she again gave me a new room. In the morning after taking a shower I looked over at the trash can and noticed it was full of eaten chicken wings.
There is no secure or privet area outside for the guests. The front door of the hotel is not in use. So only way in is from the the side where the exposed parking garage is. You can’t even stand outside without people from the street asking for money and cigarettes. There is no feeling of safety at this location.

Worst hotel ever. Disaster under total renovation and they lied and said it was done.

The worst customer experience I’ve ever received from a hotel. I called the Dayton grand (thinking I was planning in advance) fourth months in advance before my wedding to book a room. When I initially called, the desk clerk advised they were remodeling and that I needed to call closer to my date and they could not book a room because the pricing would change. I told the clerk I wanted to stay at the Dayton grand regardless or price and they said to call back. I called two more additional time and received the same message, never once did someone ask to take my name and number.
I called again 45 days out from my wedding and they said they were BOOKED. I called and spoke with the desk manager and she told me that they gave all of their rooms to a third party site and it wasn’t their fault they booked. So a hotel had given all their rooms to other third party sites and you couldn’t book a hotel room through their own site.
Now, even though I thought I was planning in advance… thanks to the Dayton grand I have no where to stay the night of my wedding in the Dayton area as all other hotels are also booked this close in advance.

The fact that all of the amenities that this hotel formerly provided (i.e., pool, spa, workout center, etc.) are closed is disappointing. What forced me to check out of this hotel an hour after checking in, however, was the complete lack of safety associated with it. The walkway between the parking garage and hotel is completely exposed to the city streets, there is no security between the doors leading to the hotel’s exterior and the elevator which transports anyone to the guest rooms and the window to our room did not close completely (and did not have screens). This is a scary place, and I wasn’t even able to obtain a refund because of Expedia’s poor customer service. Blah.

My husband and I go to Dayton once a year to see a Dayton Dragons baseball game. All of our stays except last year have been at this hotel. Several of those were when it was a Double Tree. Last year we stayed at The Crown Plaza and would have this trip too but it was totally booked.
When we arrived at The Dayton Grand we pulled in, left our car by the parking garage and went inside to check in. The doorway was littered by cigarette butts and smelled terrible. We mentioned this to the desk clerk and she didn’t seemed surprised. The lobby was extremely warm, obviously there was no air conditioning. I really wanted to run the other way at this point but there just wasn’t time to find another hotel and still get to the ballgame. So, we checked in and went up to our room. My husband used the bathroom and the toilet paper holder fell off the wall! Well, at least the bed was clean and the television (not a flat screen) worked so we could watch the news in the morning. This will absolutely be our last night at The Dayton Grand. The 2 stars are because the TV worked and the bed was clean.

Pretty hard to give a full review, even though I spent four nights here. The rate is very good, the hotel has its ups and downs. I like to stay downtown where I can walk to the stadium and the Oregon District — for that alone, it’s worthwhile. They are under renovation so the lobby isn’t in great shape. The parking garage is the strangest place ever, but you can park for free — you’ll have to walk down the ramps to get into the hotel. That said, the room I was in had been redone and overall and was pretty nice. They need to work on two things: the AC needs to be reworked (it was adequate), and the they need TVs that aren’t from the 1990s. But, the bed was great, nice desk, nice easy chair, bathroom was nice (if small), and the wifi is really good. The staff was also excellent and put a small fridge in my when when I called ahead. So, when the reno is done and the public areas are finishes, the place will be pretty nice. As it is now, I’ll stay there again since it’s $ 40 cheaper than the Crowne Plaza down the street.

This place gives you the best bang for the buck. Some of the other reviewers seem to expect a five star hotel for one star price. They want this place to be amazing for only $ 60 a night before taxes (that is what I paid for a recent weekday stay).
I got a clean room that smelled fine, working ac and heat, plenty of hot water, free wifi, cable tv, and coffee and muffins in the morning. The location is great if you want to be right downtown (the hip Oregon District is a 15 minute walk away). They have a parking garage as well.
The hallways could use a good vacuuming and the rooms were a little beat up (just little things here and there, they were clean overall).

Sort of quiet, but really sketch. They’re going through a lot of remodeling right now, but the breakfast was ridiculous, parking is a joke, no pool or weights, nothing but my room really — and though it was quiet and not really aged, it wasn’t super impressive either. Probably ok for Dayton, but not my favorite stay.

to let people know they are under renovation. No pool, hot tub as advertised, no gym, hot tub, no breakfast– not even juice.
In my room– no furniture, except the beds, no chairs or couches in the room except a desk in the room surrounded by vast empty space. No ice machine on my floor. My tv was from 1995 with buttons pushed in so far you can’t use them. The towels are hard and few– 2 for my family of four. The blankets were thin.
We were so disappointed. The pictures on
are NOTHING like what this place is like. There are no amenities. This is only good if you are exhausted, it’s after midnight and you have no other options. Please don’t stay here until after they finish this renovation. Staff says– 2016.

I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone… The place was huge and basically empty, maybe 5 rooms booked for the weekend??? The room itself was nice, but everything else was «closed for renovations». The pool, the restaurant, the bar, the gym, the gift shop; all
closed. The pop machines were missing or empty and ice was only available on the 1^st floor. Lots of the furniture was gone too. There was no breakfast other than watered down coffee and prepackaged muffins. Only one employee was working the entire hotel, (she was very nice). There is no valet or bellhop. The parking garage is spooky. It was also scary walking around outside the hotel and the only restaurants within walking distance are Uno’s and Spaghetti Factory. This hotel is on it’s last leg… Downtown Dayton is also on it’s last leg… sad. :(

After placing my reservation I quickly realized I hadn’t checked reviews for this establishment, and much to my surprise I saw more negative feedback than positive. When we arrived, I was confused because the hotel had valet service and seemed overall well kept. I discovered the pool area was closed due to construction so that disappointed me but not enough to write this review. What made me write this review were the bed bugs I had found on my pillow after waking up. They comped out stay but that was only because we took a picture of it for proof. Never staying here again.

The only reason I am giving this hotel 3 stars is solely because of the very helpful and kind staff! Everyone we encountered to help us with the issues we had were pleasant and seemed to be expecting something to be wrong. That is sad to say, but the truth. I still really appreciated them though.
The hotel looks decent from the outside but as others have mentioned, the parking is horrendous. It’a basically a dungeon and a very tight squeeze for and vehicle not to mention a huge Ford f150.
We checked in and although seemingly a bit dingy, we knew we were saving $ 40 per night than the place down the street so it was expected. I asked the employee as we checked in what time the fitness center and sauna closed, as we saw it on their website. She said, «oh I’m so sorry that someone didn’t mention when you booked, but they are under construction now so we don’t have either.» So that sucked, but still okay since we could just walk and run outside.
We got up to our first room and it was very warm in there. We had been sitting outside in the sun all day at softball games so we figured it was just us. We turned the air on and waited to cool off. The longer we waited, the hotter it got. We went to dinner and came back and it was even warmer in there so we asked to switch rooms. The lady at the front desk said no problem and assured us that we would be put on the newly renovated floor and there would be no issues with the air. We were happy with that! We walked in and it was, again, extremely warm in the room. Turned the air on all the way down to 63 hoping it would cool all quickly. It went from 74 degrees to 79 degrees quickly! It stayed between 78 – 79 all night as we sweat in our sleep! See attached photo. I just feel as though this is unacceptable.
We immediately told the front desk again in the morning and they had maintenance come up to take a look. He told us he would have it fixed by that evening which was fine because we were going to be gone all day anyways. We got back about 7pm that night and had to checkout earlier than we had thought due to the softball tourney, but we checked the room temp one last time just to see if it had been fixed as promised! It was 80 degrees in the room! So even if we were going to be staying in Dayton that night, we wouldn’t have been at the Dayton Grand, that’s for sure.
We also had 2 other friends staying in 2 other rooms on different floors in the hotel who had the same exact issues. So it wasn’t just the 2 rooms we happened to be put in to begin with. I really hope they get this figured out soon for their guests! And just know of this issue going into it!

DAYTON: News: this hotel was just bought by Hilton and will become doubletree very shortly. To prepare for the change they are spending a LOT on upgrading the property, so you can get a pretty nice room right now for very low price. Worth a look if you are a casual traveler without a loyalty program.

Well room keys didn’t work. So they upgraded us to a two room suit. Yes, this is an old hotel but it’s nice for what you pay. Get room from orbitz or
they have the best prices.

While it is true that some of the things (like the phone lol) didnt work, the place itself was beautiful. I didnt notice any chipped paint or spackle or anything.
My room was gorgeous and well kept. The design was really nice. The staff was more than accommodating, though one front desk girl had no idea what «concierge» meant. LOL
I wasnt happy that the pool was closed, but they did have a gym and sauna (which I didnt get to try.)
As for the parking garage, it was fine for me. TJ (the dude that helped me) not only took good care of me and my car, but also hooked me up with local spots to hang out at.

The staff was friendly and the accommodations were acceptable. But this place looks to be aging and in need of repairs and maintenance. When you look up at the ceilings in the public spaces, for example at the elevators, you can see cracks that need paint and Spackle. The rooms haven’t been redone in a while either. It is a couple of clicks better than a motel and one of the better choices for downtown Dayton, but still I wish they took better care.
The free breakfast was pitiful. There were no hot dishes and not even a hard boiled egg in evidence. So we had loaf bread to toast, some small sticky pastries, some yogurt, juices and coffee. Sad.
They charge for Valet parking and the parkers do hustle to get you your cars.
My bed had crumbs in it when I checked in. I worried that they were bed-​bugs, but they were crumbs. Was the bed remade from the last guest? I don’t know.
O had a Junior Suite and it was a nice size. But the street noise, on the 7^th floor was really bad. I heard every truck driving by.
Better than a cheap motel, but not up to real hotel standards.

So I’ve been in really terrible hotels but this one might take the cake. Where should I start. Well first it’s dayton. Second the hotel room look normal… But they’re not. Here’s why:
1: walked into a sauna, thought oh ill just turn the air on. (Which doesn’t work) high was barely working, low blew «air» but it wasn’t cool. Had to open the window in 30* weather to get the sweat out
2: tried to call the front desk about it but the phone didnt work… No dial tone. No nothing. «Ok ill just try the other phone» also broke. (No phone)
3: took a shower thinkin this is it, Oh wait. The shower doesn’t drain. Now I’m standing in a pool of dirty water that won’t drain.
Well that has to be it… Nope
4: use the toilet. TOILET won’t flush!!! Can’t call the front desk. Phone broke. Now my bathroom is sitting in a pool of dirty bath water with a toilet that won’t flush in a sauna room that doesn’t have air…
Am I done??? NOPE!
5: stay the night. Leave in the morning, come back… Maid service comes at 445pm bout to go to dinner and asks me if I need anything. I ask for towels. They DON’T have towels. «The laundry doesn’t work right» she says she’ll bring some back… Doesn’t happen… Comes back the next day. Ask again. Still need those towels… STILL DOESN’T HAVE TOWELS!!! Says shell come back again (ill hold my breath) and I ask for a plunger… She tells me to «call the front desk» (no phones!!! remember) says «next time she sees the front desk she’ll tell them I need a plunger» …this is the worst hotel ever…
DO NOT STAY HERE. FOR ANY REASON.

I’m honestly really not sure as to why this place has such bad reviews and trust me, I’m REALLY picky on hotels – especially their cleanliness.
My friend Ryan, and a group of us (for a gay female couples’ bachelorette party) stayed here and all of us thought it was a really nice place. The location was killer and super ideal for our set-​up for the evenings’ festivities.
I do have to concur with a few others though that the parking garage is, indeed, a nightmare. My car, which is a rather small vehicle (scion tc) had a snug time turning the garage corners without high-​fiving a wall and causing a decapitation of a mirror. But I believe the hotel was built in the 1850’s so this is kind of understandable but should possibly look into fixing that. However, everything else was great!
Ryan and I grabbed the keys after our really simple and polite check-​in and headed up to our room on the 7^th floor (723). Immediately when we walked in, the bed definitely stood out. An elegant headboard, pristinely clean white sheets with a navy foot overlay and at least 3 pillows for each of us. The bed was so comfortable I was unsure if I was going to get Ryan out of it to even go check out the pool.
Successfully I got him up and we went to explore. The hallway smelled of chlorine but we were on the pool floor. All other floors I went to were scent free and mind you it was only in the immediate vicinity. The pool was situated in a sunroom type set-​up with windows so you could look outward to the buildings in the city which made it very pretty and relaxing. I never saw any kids in it and there was also a hot tub which looked terribly inviting. :) There were clean towels along with a place to put them after usage alongside some tables. The pool/​hot tub looked very clean and well-​kept.
There was also a small gym with treadmills, ellipticals, free-​weights and a sauna.
Oh and did I mention the bathroom in our room? Um, phenomenal. Marble countertops and shower and everything was SPOTLESS and I’m particularly picky about hotel bathrooms and carpet. Both were great.
The hotel staff was very nice, helpful and courteous. Bobby, the downstairs’ lounge’s bartender was really awesome and knowledgable about the building’s history. He was great with helping point out to me (as a Dayton gay-​kid newcomer) about the scene, the friendly spots and local hangouts we might want to check out. Our bachelorette party was at Spaghetti Warehouse (within a really short walk) as well as we all went to Masque (also very close and walkable) which I really liked.
When I got back to the room, very late in the evening/​early morning, I slept like a rock and the halls were quite.
I plan to come back to Dayton and I do plan to stay here again but hopefully come back a little earlier to check out the hot tub. :D

Lemme take you folks to school on this place because though the more recent crappy reviews are more than fair, this hotel used to be a most excellent Double Tree. I used to know the events coordinator for the now defunct Double Tree and stayed there often on visits back home. The hotel was pristine with valet parking so you didn’t have to brave the elevatorless and terrifying excuse for a parking garage, the place didn’t have random people coming in and out at all hours (I’ll elaborate in a bit), and the staff were helpful to a fault. Plus they had fresh baked cookies always.
Now this is an unaffiliated hotel that is obviously a rotting carcass of what it once was. This irks the hell out of me on a personal level. The current owners do no upkeep on the place anymore; damage to the walls, parts of the shower hardware were falling apart, the room was not cleaned once and in fact had someone else’s underwear in it when we arrived, the elevators are in desperate need of routine maintenance, etc. The current owners are milking the place until its another slum hotel downtown and then they’ll sell it, it’s obvious.
Notes:
–No room service.
–There was A LOT of foot traffic in and out of this place, an abnormal amount in fact. And, to top that off, after hearing about the issues they had with staff family members living in the hotel… I dunno… seemed possible.
–Parking garage is from a horror movie.
–Room was not cleaned once and we didn’t even have a «do not disturb» or «clean my damn room» sign.
–It’s easy to see that the place used to be nice and is now falling apart.
Yeah, this place makes me sad.
