Partial Review:

Nicky’s Lionhead Tavern reminds me of the pubs I have seen while vacationing in London. The rich woodwork, stained glass, and lion heads give off a cozy and fun atmosphere. The focal point in the room is their massive bar. It is beautiful, made with heavy dark wood and attached on the back are large deep book shelves with an attractive mirror in the center. It was also very interesting to look at all the old photographs that are hung throughout the restaurant.

They have a huge selection of tap beers with a full bar. For starters I decided on one of the dark ales, a Guinness, and for an appetizer I ordered Nicky’s homemade spinach and artichoke heart dip for $ 7.99. It is Nicky’s own mix of hot bubbling cheeses, artichokes, spinach, and special spices. It is served with toasted Ciabatta bread and crispy corn chips. It tasted wonderful — gooey, warm, and cheesy and the corn chips are a great accompaniment.

History

Established in 1980.

Established in 1980 Nicky’s flourished as a laid back, low-key bar. Friends and neighbors frequented the small bar for cold beer, some relaxation and to chat with Tommy and John. Packer players even came in at night when the team held a pre-season camp close to the St. Norbert College. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon during training camp to have 30 or so players at one time spending their nights at Nicky’s. They have pictures on the wall to prove it. In fact, there are many, many pictures and newspaper articles about Nicky’s and their friends practically covering an entire walls. Looking around Nicky’s Lionhead Tavern it’s hard to believe that this pub opened with a mere three beers offered on draught. A handful more of different brands in bottles and a few liquors to choose from rounded out the small inventory. Today, this thriving two story Tavern has broadened its horizons to 10 beers on draught, even more in bottles and an abundance of liquor to make any cocktail imaginable.
