Intown Quilters

Today, I went all the way to Intown Quilters in Decatur from Johns Creek. It was more than worth the trip. I’m making some special quilts and was having trouble finding the right colors and the right measurements. Sandy spent more than an hour with me, going throughout the store to find fabrics that would match. Not only is she a genius at color coordination, she is also amazing at calculating all the measurements, all which thoroughly confused me. As a new quilter, I need all the help I can get. I know I can get that help and fine quality products at Intown Quilters!

I’ve been shopping at Intown Quilters for YEARS. I also frequent lots of fabric (and yarn) shops where ever I travel. Each time, I am thankful IQ is my home fabric store. I’m a huge Westminster/​Kaffe Fasset/​Brandon Mably fan and they, by far, have the best selection. Service is attentive but not in your face (which I hate). My daughter and I have both taken classes as well. They were well organized and fun. IQ is definitely one of my «happy places».

They have a nice selection of fabrics and helpful staff. They were very patient with me (I’m a newbie to the quilting world). I needed assistance with fabric as well as picking out some basic supplies. Staff helped me find what I needed without going over budget or getting into the realm of unnecessarily advanced tools for my skill level.

This is a nifty little place with a great selection of fabrics and really helpful staff. There’s a basement level with sale items and a spacious and well-​lit classroom.

It’s all about the selection and variety! They pack it in here and have something to fit everyone’s tastes. They have classes and markdowns in their basement area. Just watch the stairs, the steps are small and tight.

Great selection of high end quilting fabric and a few other cotton fabrics suitable for garment making. The prices are high, but you pay for the service and selection that can’t be found at Joann’s or Hancock.

Intown quilters is easily one of the finest quilt shops in the country. If you’re like me and search out quilt and fabric shops wherever your travels take you, this shop will excite you. Seriously. Walk into this shop and you will rest your knitting needles, books, families, work and whatever other distractions have been keeping you from your sewing machines. You will be inspired. I had high expectations from Intown Quilters because of all the positive buzz out there including reviews that all praise the shop in pretty much the same ways.” Excellent, knowledge people interested and happy to help”.I expected the huge selection of Amy (and David!) Butler, Kaffe Fassett and batiks, and there was. But there was more. So much more. Bolts and bolts of every colorway, tone and hue you could dream. There were conversational prints, juvenile, prints, sophisticated geometrics in cool colors. Finished project examples everywhere. Owner Sarah Phillips took the time to give me batt tips on making my quilts more soft and cozy so they don’t all end up wall hangings.. Intown Quilter is an easy to get to brick & mortar shop with a wall of windows and great lighting. Lots of patterns, notions and trims and tons of sewn quilts, garments and accessories on display.

Best fabric selection in the area. This place is dangerous to my pocketbook though. They always have something new and interesting. It’s a lovely place that is always worth the stop!

Incredible selection of fabrics! There’s tons here for quilters, but if you’re putting together clothes, bags, and other non-​quilt items, you’re going to be just as satisfied walking around here. There’s floral patterns, animal prints, stuff for kids, pinks, greens, blues, you name it, it’s in this house. That’s right, it’s a HOUSE full of nothing but fabric and a small wall of notions (mostly for quilters). They also sell plenty of books for both quilters and sewers, and there are various patterns you can buy as well. Not just patterns from the well knowns like McCalls, but local seamstresses who sell their patterns for great prices (we’re talking maybe $ 5 a pattern).
But it gets better. Oh boy does it get even better.
Go downstairs into the basement and you’ll wander into the land of 50% fabric and there is a LOT down there. Shelves and tables filled to the brim with all sorts of fun and adorable patterns, and it’s not just cotton fabrics either. Corduroy, felt, even lining can be found here. Even better, if you’re willing or able to finish off what’s left of the bolt you want, it’s just $ 3 a yard. Not even a discount shop can beat those prices, and especially not with high quality fabrics such as these. If you only quilt, the deal isn’t too good for you, but if you love to sew at length, the amount of yardage you can get for next to nothing is absolutely incredible. GREAT deal. I had to stop myself from buying more… today. ;)
The staff was super helpful and the owner helped cut our fabric and talked to us at length about the classes offered and the fabrics they tend to purchase. It’s nice to know that down the other side of my street, I can find fabrics not offered at Atlanta’s other fabric guru store (the infallible Whipstitch) and vice versa. It’s probably bad that I’m barely 6 miles from here, but when you get almost 20 yards of fabric for under $ 80, you really can’t complain. Will definitely be back again when I’m itching for a ton of fabric — you’ll find me up to my ears in bolts in the basement!
NOTE: The non-​sale fabrics will run you between $ 9-​$ 15 a yard, but these are top-​quality fabrics. They are thick and perfect for whatever you’re working on, and if $ 9 seems like too much, there is that basement deal!

Sometimes I feel like I am looking for reasons to visit Intown Quilters — and I don’t think that’s a bad thing! A fantastic quilt/​fabric store, always stocked with the most beautiful in modern quilting fabrics, along with a large selection of other sewing notions — patterns, thread, etc. I haven’t taken any classes here yet, but would love to do so in the future because their schedule always has multiple classes that interest me. The staff is incredibly helpful and patient, always ready to answer questions or figure out obscure yardage-​needs.
The selection is huge, and I could spend hours looking at everything. These fabrics are high quality (and as such are more expensive than Hancocks or JoAnns) and totally worth it. Be sure you go down to the basement to check out the sale section — nothing like getting some of these fabrics 50% off!
Traveling to this store is absolutely worth your time — there isn’t another store in Atlanta that beats it!

Have you ever sighed and thought, «wow, what sh*!!y fabric» while trying to find something, anything useable at Hancocks? Well, this store isn’t like that. They have a fantastic assortment of really modern jems and some cute reproduction 20’s and 30’s style fabrics. They have tons of amy butler and gobs of fantastic prints to tie it all together. The only con i can really think of is that its not Hancock prices. you get what you pay for and their high quality fabrics are suitable for heirloom quilts and awesome skirts– fantastic bags and anything else you see fit to make! Its not that paper thing crap that Joanne’s has and the printing isn’t sprayed on like Walmart used to be. Just thick soft cotton fabric waiting to be converted into something original and amazing!
Classes: I’ve taken a few classes and they are great! I recommend knowing how to use and set up your sewing machine before diving in though. These classes are for someone who has the very basics down. Then they show you a whole new world of possibilites!

Pros: Great selection of quilting fabrics and other sewing accessories, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful, price is reasonable compared to other places.
Cons: Too bad they don’t carry heavier types of fabrics.
I was looking for some modern prints, and I came to the right place. They have a lot of Amy Butler fabrics for cheaper than if you were to buy them online.

Even without experiencing any of the classes, I’d say this is a standout among quilt stores. The fabrics are plentiful and lovely, and many of them aren’t Grandmotherly Quilty. I came home with deep greens, vivid blues, and the crown jewel find of my Atlanta quilt-​fabric shopping trip: enough dark, rich red-​and-​black fabric to do the goth/​punk quilt I’m planning on giving friends as a wedding present.
The service is attentive, helpful, and knowledgeable; one of the staffers pitched in to help me find the right fabrics for my planned modified-​bargello quilt and gave me over a half hour of her time. I was grateful; her eye was accurate and her opinions worthwhile, and my quilt fabrics are better-​chosen thanks to her help.
If you’re looking for gifts, there are scattered baskets and shelves with packages of coordinated fat quarters and fat eighths.
Their collection of Asian-​inspired fabrics was good, albeit modern, and very colorful. It’s hard to find such fabrics in the white-​bread Southeast; I suspect Intown has the market cornered in Georgia for this type of fabric.
Book selection is plentiful and diverse. Art quilts, appliqué, and traditional patchwork are all represented.
A good shop. Worth your money, worth your drive, worth your time.

WOW! After going to the East Cobb Quilt Show I had to check and drooling at their kits and fabrics, I had to scope out Intown Quilters for myself — now that they are so much closer. All the fabrics I love — Amy Butler, Free Spirit, Lakehouse, and more were there, and their kits have amazing fabric selections included. It was wonderful. Now if only I could win the lottery to buy some of these designer fabrics — I’ll be set. But atleast now there is FINALLY a place closer to me where I can get them. They offer classes too. Pricier than what I would have thought, but hey so is the fabric. I’m sure it will be worth it.

You’re crafty. You’re tired of the boring selection at Hancock’s. Driving to Joann’s is a pain. The answer is right here, in a little house behind the North Dekalb Mall (on the side with the Pier 1). Are you looking for designer fabrics from Amy Butler, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, Denyse Schmidt, Free Spirit, etc? Well here you go. Be sure to take a peek in the basement for the clearance fabric.
