Jocelyn P Spaulding, DMD

I visited Dr. Spaulding in 2011, when she seemed somewhat new to dentistry. Although, very nice, I felt that she was far too aggressive in her approach to dentistry (see below).
During my initial visit/​routine teeth cleaning and check up, I was surprised to find that Dr. Spaulding told me I need to replace nearly EVERY filling in my mouth with either another filling or a partial crown. The total cost of replacement was nearly $ 2,000 after insurance.
I am also in medicine and understand the importance of a second opinion. I visited another highly recommended dentist in Atlanta, who remarked that my fillings were 100% in tact and did not need replacing. In fact, that dentist said that each filling was in great condition and could not understand how Dr. Spaulding reached her conclusion (of course he said this in a professional manner, without throwing her under the bus). Since 2011, I’ve seen two more dentists for a total of 8+ check ups (one of those dentists is faculty at Dr. Spaulding’s alma matter University of Pennsylvania). Both dentists in Philadelphia have remarked that my fillings are completely intact and definitely do not need replacement.
Perhaps I caught Dr. Spaulding on an off day, but to me, she is more of a cosmetic dentist who is not conservative in her approach to dentistry. The work she would have had done, which she claimed i «needed», was expensive and (now 5 years later I can say without reservation) was completely unnecessary. Moreover, I was reminded by a faculty member at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dentistry that excessive and unnecessary work tends to lead to additional problems down the road.
I’m sure Dr. Spaulding does great work, but I am extremely happy that I was skeptical of her opinion and I would suggest that her patients seek a second opinion for any major work that she suggests.

I had similar experience to the previous user. I went only for cleaning, and i was «forced» to get xray because i am a new patient (way to get unnecessary radiation). I asked a few questions to get an idea for crown, whitening pricing etc noting i dont intend to purchase them now. Dr spaulding came to go over them again. I said i don’t intend to buy them again. I felt that i was constantly being tried to sold things. The reason of my visit was to get the «free cleaning» as part of my insurance, but i was told i have gum disease and i was offered «deep cleaning». That i need 4 treatments per year and last treatment would not be covered by insurance at all. I was told the initial cleaning will cost 150 and more than 600 for the last uncovered one)… I was like ok. then next appointment i am told to pay 75 more because my insurance didnt cover. Almost 250 for a cleaning when i have insurance plan is crazy! I go to my dentist in home country and he says everything looks normal and i have no gum disease. I was overtreated, and when i refused some of the other things offered, i was asked in cold voice to sign a paper that i refuse. Way to try to sell your services and not respect patients wishes or show empathy. Needless to say, i stopped going here.

They were knowledgable and professional. They weren’t overly friendly by any means. My appointment lasted almost 3 hours, when all I wanted was a cleaning. I consented to the first visit examination, X-​rays and floride treatment, for which they quoted me $ 130. No cavities! Yay, right? Nope. Made me feel like I had horrible teeth, sending me home with a prescription for special toothpaste, a bottle of prescription mouthwash ($ 18) and the recommendation to spend several hundred on a toothbrush. When checking me out, I was pleasantly surprised at the $ 86 bill («oh, less than I thought!» «Oh, let me check…») nope, $ 218. With insurance. They have a little decorative water fall in the office. Final blow… no walking out with that clean mouth feeling: gritty fluoride treatment has to stay on for a few hours.

I hate going to the dentist. Like, I loathe it. I’m not one of those people who was blessed with good teeth. Bad teeth and gums run in my family– I might as well be British (joking, sort of).
Despite having awful teeth and hating the dentist, I know good and darn well that the longer you put off going to the dentist the worse you fare so I always try to make a yearly appointment for a check-​up and cleaning. Well, I recently moved back to Atlanta after spending a year in Alabama after college and I didn’t have a dentist here so I turned to Dr. Spaulding. During my time in Alabama I was still driving 5 hours to visit my family and see my hometown dentist, Dr. He-​Who-​Shall-​Not-​Be-​Named, in Statesboro. From what he told me, my only worries were my wisdom teeth. When he dismissed me with his slow, southern drawl, I felt that everything had been taken care of. No questions asked. No second opinions.
Thank God for Dr. Spaulding, Jennifer, Elizabeth, and the rest of the staff at this office. I made an appointment and managed to get in within a matter of days. Jennifer, my hygienist, is super smart and hilarious. We bonded over our Statesboro connection and she kept it real with me as she deep cleaned one quadrant of my teeth during my first visit. After my X-​Rays she even offered some revelations that my hometown doctor of almost six years never mentioned– like the fact that I still have two baby teeth, that I am exhibiting the early signs of gum disease, and that my wisdom teeth need to come out ASAP.
Now some might say, Imani, those city doctors are just trying to fleece you. However, I have seen the X-​Rays– those are baby teeth (not a root in sight), I know my gums aren’t great (remember, hereditary), and my wisdom tooth is so nasty and painful sometimes that I’m surprised I hadn’t heard about it sooner. How can a dentist who has been seeing me for five years miss all of that?!
Today I went to Jennifer for a deep clean of the other three quadrants of my mouth and saw Dr. Spaulding for two fillings. Both processes went smoothly and were as pleasant as deep cleanings and fillings can be.
While I still don’t love going to the dentist, Dr. Spaulding’s staff make the necessary evil tolerable– even enjoyable at times. Her office has a spa feel to it, there’s always gentle music playing in the background, and you can even ask for headphones to wear during your procedures. Dr. Spaulding is attentive and her hygienists are knowledgeable and have great bedside manner.
I’ve seen a couple of different dentists in my lifetime but I cannot recommend Dr. Spaulding’s office enough. I now have a treatment plan and I look forward to getting my teeth in order. This might sound crazy but I kind of can’t wait to go back.

Let me start by saying I was very, very nervous to go to ANY dentist since it has been a decade since my last visit. I literally cried when I lost a filling not because it hurt, but because I was so embarrassed that I had waited so long. Capella the
practice administrator is an absolute beauty and testament as to how every first impression employee should be. Then why I met Dr Spaulding, she talked me off of my ledge and didn’t judge me at all. When it came to the actual service, there was Chloe the most cheerful assistant hands down. This office is beautiful, the staff so sweet and attentive. You even get to pick your own music to listen to during your appointment. I did have to wait a little over a week to see the doctor, but in my mind that’s a good sign when it comes to a practice! I say good for them doing so well during tough times. They obviously know how to treat clients AND keep them! I still don’t love going to the dentist, but they sure make it easier!

I have been a patient for a couple of years… before the move to the new location! I love the new location, feels more like the lobby of a fine hotel than a dentist office. I appreciate Dr. Spaulding’s ease of approach, gentle bedside manner and her clinical staff seems to take a genuine interest in their patients!
I have had one unfortunate episode while being a patient and it revolved around the administrative staff. I expressed my concerns to Dr. Spaulding and without haste, my issue/​concerns were resolved in a timely manner. Everyone understands no one or business can be perfect all the time, but the key is how the imperfect times are handled that makes all the difference in the world! I especially appreciate that the issue was handled without a lot of drama and I never felt awkward when returning after my conflict was handled!

I have been a patient of Dr. Spaulding for several years. I am always treated professionally and am able to be scheduled when convenient for me. The new office is like a Spa. Serene, Calm, and good vibes surround. Which, I need for the dentist, as it’s not my favorite thing to do. Lyndsie is my hygienist and she is great! So personable and remembers me every time and what we talked about. She puts me at ease and does a great job with my Dental care.
Dr. Spaulding is warm, compassionate and honest with what the priorities should be with my treatment plan.

First, a disclaimer that I have not actually been a patient to Dr. Spaulding so I cannot speak to her skill as a dentist. However, I did try to make a new patient appointment and was completely frustrated and baffled by how I was handled. I called on Monday because of a dental emergency that needed to be taken care of immediately. I made this very clear to the receptionist and she scheduled me on Thursday. I gave her all my insurance information and it seemed find. I even called back the next day to confirm the appointment and to give her additional information. However, on Wednesday, I received a voicemail saying that her office accidentally had two people doing the scheduling for that day and she was double booked. The voicemail said she can move me to 1 hour later, which may have been fine for my schedule, but when I called back literally 10 minutes after missing the call, she said my appointment would have to be 2 hours later than the original time. I reiterated that this was an emergency but was basically told I am just out of luck. This office made NO attempt to accomodate me when it was their scheduling mistake. They also clearly have very limited hours…7AM-3PM. Don’t waste your time with this disorganized and unsympathetic office.
