History

Established in 1991.

Dan Negley, owner/manager of Breakaway Cycling started the business in 1991. Dan’s cycling experience includes racing both road and mountain bikes, leading bicycle tours, providing technical support for some of the largest rides in North America, and riding to work daily. Dan moved from Ralston, Nebraska, (a suburb of Omaha, where he managed an established store) to start Breakaway after his twin brother, a pastor in the area, suggested that Delaware would be a good location. After researching the area, a building in historic downtown Delaware was selected. The store opened in a 1,500 square foot former fast food facility with 2 employees. In 1994, Breakaway moved to its current location, a 5,000 square foot former car dealership which prior to that served as a livery stable.
