Argyll Whisky Beer, A Gastropub

Went here for dinner with some friends and it was a solid, 3-​star visit. I got the Green Curry, paired with a Dread Pirate Roberts drink. The Curry was delicious, but the drink was pretty weak. The service could also be better.
My friends got the Caesar salad and burger. According to them, the salad was good, but the burger was just OK. Not sure if they were having an off night (it was Monday) or what.
Might try this place again, since the food was pretty solid, but for the price of the drinks, I’d rather spend that money on the 16^th Street Mall and get twice as much. :)

The hostess was embarrassingly rude. The wait staff actually apologized for her behavior, and come to find out she is the manager/​owner. No thank you-​the food is decent, but why would anyone support such crappy leadership and behavior?

Great selection of whiskeys! Food is eclectic from all different places. Great place to start an evening out on the town.

Best fish and chips in Denver for sure. The burgers are also awesome.
The triple cooked fries are molten magma hot but great.
I come often and love the drinks and cheese plates.

Problem is, the entire restaurant smelled like fish that was going bad. I don’t know whether or not the kitchen knew about it, but throughout my dinner, it concerned me that my own clothes would still have the stench.
I don’t know how a restaurant that ostensibly prides itself on ambience could let something go so awry.

Surprised not to see Guinness in a English Pub… or Murphy’s, maybe they do local beers… English isn’t local… none the less the stout was decent, and I had a Perfect Scotch Egg.

If you haven’t been, put it at the top of your list and make it a priority. The service team is on point and incredibly knowledgeable… we let them guide our whole meal and was in love with them at the end! The Old Fashioned with a local whiskey will quickly make you focus on focusing ;-) Sample a few things from the menu and end it with the Whiskey Cake, because, well, you are in a whiskey bar. Awesome addition to the Denver food scene!

I should have known that with a name like this, I should be sticking to the whisky and beer. Instead, I came for a hearty breakfast. I was pleased to have a traditional breakfast, but the simple stack of pancakes, side of scrambled eggs, and scone just didn’t do it for me.
I think I need to return during the evening for some drinks to give this place another chance.
Service by the way is great.

The evening started out okay — the space is beautiful — but we were totally thrown off by the death metal music, which totally didn’t fit the vibe.
Then we asked our waiter for recommendations and inquired about the local whiskeys — he was overall pretty unhelpful in our decision making progress. However, the cocktails and whiskey themselves were quite good.
So when things seemed to be turning around, everything soured rapidly when we exited the venue. We strolled past the Dj station and looked at the collection of CDs sitting on the table before heading outside. As we were casually talking outside the restaurant, a man approached us and accused my female friend of stealing his CDs (apparently he was the DJ responsible for the horrible tunes). His body language was menacing and threatening — totally unnecessary and inappropriate. Will never take my business here again.

Incredible time every time we come here. Great service, incredible food and awesome restaurant! We got to sit outside for my husbands birthday and 3 of us decided to get tasting flights of whiskey, rye, and scotch. The bartenders were incredible at suggesting beers to compliment the flights and it was so fun to go around the table and try to decipher what each tasted and smelt like. Then we would read the paper that comes with it and either get excited that we could tell the flavors and smells or not be close at all! Come here to spend some money, you will be tasting or drinking things that weren’t even something you ever knew existed before! Enjoy and come for their HH $ 4 old fashions and spicy olives!

I just came by for drinks, as I had been looking for a good cocktail bar. Argyll has a great listing of whiskey options, and I appreciated that you could make any of them into a cocktail of your choice, well from a selection of options. The bartenders were super friendly and attentive. I decided on a Manhattan and a Sazerac. Both were excellently made, as I could see from the bar. They used the Luxardo Maraschino cherries for my Manhattan which is the only way you can make them IMHO. My cocktails had just the right flavors and were exactly what I wanted. Price-​wise, they were very affordable considering that they both had decent whiskey in them.
In terms of the ambiance for the place, I really liked the control bustle of the restaurant and bar. It was fun just to sit back, relax, and hang out. The DJ, Thomas I think his name was, was amazing! I loved the music he was playing and was sad to find out that he doesn’t spin many other places. I would have definitely gotten my bad self down to some of his jams but alas I was content to sit and simply listen to the beautiful sounds coming through the speakers. I definitely plan to come back for a cocktail in the future.

We stopped in for dinner last night and had what I’d call a «solid» experience. I wasn’t blown away, but I wasn’t disappointed either. The hostess seemed kind of flustered and distracted and ended up sitting us across from each other in the middle of the otherwise empty community table… That was strange.
Anyway, our actual server was nice (if not a little slow) and our food and drinks were very good! We got a whiskey version of a Moscow Mule with our Denver passports and my husband and I both liked it. As for dinner, he went with the fish and chips and I got the chicken pot pie. I thought the pot pie was great — the crust was buttery, flaky and soft — and the fish and chips was the most elegant version I’d ever seen. I will say that $ 15 for a small pot pie seems excessive.
The inside space is a little dark but it’s also clean, well-​decorated and spacious. Overall, I liked Argyll but I’m not sure I liked it enough to make it a regular or even a repeat occurrence.

Mr. P. is a huge whiskey fan and I thought we should try Argyll, so I snapped up a Living Social deal when it came around. A few weeks later, 5280 Magazine awarded Argyll the distinction of Best Steak in its «Top of the Town 2015» issue. Perfect, I thought, now I know exactly what to order.
We arrived during Happy Hour and wanted to sample from that menu prior to ordering dinner. Mr. P. had an order of deviled eggs (which I did not try — gag) while I had the Potted Trout, a wonderful smoky trout spread. We shared an order of the Triple Cooked Chips and Mr. P. decided they were the best French fries he’s ever eaten. I’m not sure I’m ready to go that far but they really were very good. Argyll’s whiskey menu is quite extensive but we were disappointed that nothing local is represented. I enjoyed a couple glasses of $ 5 red sangria, the specialty cocktail of the moment from the HH menu.
We don’t often go out for steak because we love grillin’ and chillin’ at home. We have a meat market right up the street from our house that sells locally sourced organic meats and some of the best steaks I’ve ever eaten are cooked right in our back yard. So, I have to agree with 5280 — Argyll’s steak was spectacular. It was a beautiful cut of meat that was cooked to perfection. Three dipping sauces come with it: horseradish, chimmichuri, and green peppercorn. Mine was presented with the horseradish on top so if you’re not a fan make sure you ask them to leave it off. I can’t wait to go back and have that steak again. Next time, I’m having the Triple Cooked Chips on the side instead of beforehand.
After our visit, Westword handed Argyll another accolade in it’s awkwardly titled «The 8 Most Overhyped Dishes in Denver,» which directs the reader away from several hot spots in town to a lower key and often better option. In this instance, the article suggests you skip the indie trendy ramen spots and try Argyll instead for its Spot of Tea ramen. I will definitely remember that for a wintertime work week lunch.
Argyll has made it’s home in the former (lackluster) Las Margaritas space, a much better fit with the higher quality eateries sprouting up along 17^th Avenue. The space is huge, boasting two patios, a large bar area with solarium windows, and a smaller dining room. It’s also smartly decorated in grays and yellows, tartan, wool and leather. Argyll is as classically comfortable on the eyes as it is on the palate.

Both the beer and whisky lists are some of the most extensive I’ve ever seen, I see why both are right in the name!
Argyll also has a very interesting and varied menu, well executed and attractively priced. Service was good, very understanding of our large group with several very small kids.
Having a live DJ playing music that appeared to be from physical CDs was a bit of a strange fit, particularly being in the dining area rather than the bar.

When you come in ask for Ginju… she knows the menu and gives great recommendations!
This place has a great selection
I tried the green bean salad and the kale salad… the kale salad is amazing! Gives you that it’s summer feeling… very refreshing.
I’ve only had a couple types of ginger beer… it’s cool and refreshing very tasty
We got the fun guy burger… the meat is so tender and the bread is nice and soft… I ordered the triple fried chip (fries…but thicker)
I highly suggest this place… I will be back when I come to Denver again!

Holy cow — I have driven by this place time and time again, having zero clue the coziness that lies behind the front doors and amazing patio. Tried it tonight, and oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. First of all, the atmosphere — which is quite charming! The perfect balance of open space, pub, gastropub, contemporary — with old Europe library. Simply outstanding, spacious and artfully decorated. Everything is incredibly clean, but not too sterile. The service is attentive, but not bothersome. The servers seemed to arrive right on cue, without my ever needing to ask for assistance or seek service. The charcuterie is just simply outstanding, because it is just that, simply outstanding — without items that are so complicated that you feel you are taking a risk to order it!
Take a look at the picture of my manhattan. In the name of all that is good and quenching — that is a $ 4.00 manhattan with the establishment selected bourbon, that was equally delicious and divine. Nothing is worse than when you ask what the «house» pour is, and it is something like McCormick or Old Crow — not here I tell you, not here.
So why the four stars instead of 5? It gets a little loud, and this was just a Monday. More importantly, I plan to be back to eat a real meal, and want an opportunity to increase the star rating.

Last Saturday my guy and I decided to explore the Uptown area since it had been a while since we have come over this way.
We ended up at Argyll for our final destination that evening. We had no appetite at the time, quite unfortunate because this place smelled amazing. The food at other tables looked delicious. We sat in the bar area which was pretty crowded on a Saturday, not surprising. Our bartender was a heavy set gentleman with a beard and a great attitude.
He assisted us in picking our beers, although initially started raving about IPA’s and hoppy beers. We cut him off, «whoaaa, not interested but thanks.» He made some suggestions more up our ally (porters, nitro taps, chocolatey flavors). I wish I could remember what we finally landed on, whatever the case, they have a great beer selection and we ended up very happy with our purchase.
I did not see the bill so unfortunately I am not sure about the value here. The place looks very nice on the inside and is participating in restaurant week so I imagine it isn’t the place you go if you are looking for something cheap.
There was a photographer in the bar area who got a horrendous picture of me while I was talking about something ridiculous. I asked our server why she was taking pictures of strangers and he told me she is with 5280 magazine. I doubt she will use the photo of us, I really hope it just got deleted right away. How embarrassing.
Anyways, great spot, we’ll be back!

Overall: pretty good. Service was good, ambiance was noisy and not quite what I was hoping for. Drinks were delicious (Tuck & Roll!) And food was good. I have to agree though that the food wasn’t as good as it should have been for the price. We started with the Scottish egg, which was tasty but I had an unpleasant bite of gristle or somewhat that my teeth couldn’t break down. I (hopefully subtly) snuck it back to the edge of the plate. Shouldn’t happen in general but at these prices especially… The endive salad was a lovely addition that added freshness to the plate.
I chose the striped bass for my entrée. It was a smaller portion for the price but left me satisfied. The fish was well cooked, delicate, & matched well with the root vegetable purée & beet sauce. The only issue I had was the celery type veggie that rested on top of the fish. It was very chewy & wood-​like and not terribly palatable. My man enjoyed the Shepherd’s pie (as did I, the bite I was able to wrestle away from him), though agreed with other reviews that it was rather small. He filled up with a stout, however, and we shared the worldly flight of whiskey. Surprisingly, the Japanese selection won our tastebuds over more so than the French or Indian. They let you take the list with you so you know what you had and can make notes about each.
I’d go back for happy hour, but the full priced bill just made me feel like I should have been wowed.

We headed to the Argyle for our second visit last night. Replacing the long faded Las Margaritas, this is a great addition to the neighborhood. Similar, menu-​wise in some ways to Euclid Hall, they have great house made sausage and charcuterie. And a wonderful selection of gins, which pleased my gin loving companion to no end.
Prompt friendly service as well. We’ll be back.

We were looking for someplace new to try, this new year (2015). My husband searched Unilocal!and found Argyll Whiskey Beer, so off we went.
Oh My Gosh! I really don’t want to write a review, as I don’t want others to discover this wonderful place, but on the other hand, I really want them to succeed! They have only been opened for 7 months, but you would never know it, they are a well-​oiled machine! It seems like they have been open for years! I hope they’ll be around for years!
Argyll Whisky Beer is wonderful! Their website says, «Argyll is a place, this place, warm and graceful. It is a movement, a grandfather, and brother; Someone you touch without ever knowing why. It is home. It is yours. eat well, drink slowly, speak warmly» Well, that says it all! Need I say more, I guess I will, so here it goes.
Argyll is located on a busy corner in Denver, in the Uptown area. Parking is on the street, and you will probably have to walk to the restaurant, from where you find a parking space, a block or two away, but DON’T let that stop you! They are so worth it!
Interior — the interior of the restaurant has, what I would call, 4 separate dining areas. One of the dining areas is small, carpeted, very intimate, and comfortable. The other three areas are the bar area, the «outside» patio area, which is enclosed, and a separate area just off of the bar. We sat in the «outside» patio area, which is totally enclosed, with window walls that look out into the surrounding area. There is a cement floor, with intimate lighting. I wish it were a little bit warmer in there, and a bit more lighting, but I’m not complaining. We truly enjoyed sitting there!
The larger bar has enough seating for approximately 16 people. It’s quaint and comfortable. I think we’ll try sitting there during our next visit (Oops! I wasn’t going to say that until the end!). There is a tv in that area, and it’s very nice.
There is a separate smaller bar-​type area next to the regular bar. I’m not sure if anyone can sit there, or if it’s «seating by hostess.» It looked cozy as well.
Staff — excellent service, very knowledgeable, and friendly.
Menu — WOW! It was so hard to choose! We had:
a. Scottish egg — this was very, very good! I have previously had a Scottish egg, and it was not that good. This one was very good! The center was done perfectly, and the outside coating was delicious! I will definitely have this again! (Oops!, there I go again!)
b. Rosemary Ham — this was shredded, or sliced thin ham, with rosemary, side bread, and several different toppings or sides. Excellent! This was easily split between two people, if not three. Yes, I will order this again too.
c. Fish and Chips — other Unilocalers! have given this very good reviews, and I totally agree. You get one very large piece of fish, that is cooked just right. The chips are large french fries, even larger than steak fries. These were good and hot. The fish was large enough to split between two people, which is what we did. Yes, I would have this again. Both the fish and chips were not greasy either, which is usually the case, but not so here.
d. Dessert — we had the, and I hope I get the name correct, Sticky Toffee Pudding. The only thing I can say is, WOW!!! You MUST order this! It is easily split between two people, but you might want one of your own!
Other items on their menu, that I want to try are the: Shepherd’s Pie, the Colorado Beef Burger, the Spot O’ Tea, and the White Bean Soup. Hey, I’d like to try pretty much everything else on the menu, but the above mentioned items really caught my eye. I would have ordered them tonight too, but I had to stop somewhere!
Drinks — Yes, they have a full bar, The thing I wanted to mention, was that I ordered hot tea, as it was COLD outside. The waitress brought a real porcelain tea pot, and a china tea cup and saucer! WOW! I’m not sure when the last time was that i had hot tea in a real tea pot, and a tea cup! Oh, the cream was REAL CREAM too! It’s these little things, these little details, that really make the difference!
Restrooms — CLEAN! You know what they say, «a clean restroom is the sign of a clean kitchen.» I can actually say yes, the Kitchen is CLEAN too!
How do I know the kitchen is CLEAN, well, you can see straight through to the kitchen. The way this restaurant is designed, with the «window walls,» etc., you can see through the entire restaurant, straight through to the kitchen. Yes, I did look in, and it’s CLEAN! IMMACULATE! Argyll’s is totally transparent, as they have nothing to hide!
Management — no, I didn’t met the management, but you can tell quit a bit about management, by the staff and service. Management must be very good, as the staff, the service, the restaurant itself, is excellent!
