Design Within Reach

This is an overall company review. I have tried to work with this company in several regions over the past several years and have never had a good experience. The products are beautiful, the staff is blasé and sometimes arrogant. Service is non responsive and the accounting department can not reverse charges on my credit card for orders I have placed because they can’t find the charge records.
In one case, the company failed to deliver 2 chairs, claiming I had not reported it soon enough, and I would have to absorb the loss. Finding responsive service people in this company is a scavenger hunt. The delivery company did find the missing chairs in their warehouse. The DWR representative could not have been ruder about the whole thing.

Wow– My wife and I came in there today to buy an Eames chair. I was met with a gentlemen and saw the chair and told him what I was looking for. He was rude and the first thing he told me it was over $ 5,000. It wasn’t so much what he said it was how he said it… very rude, condescending, and stuck up. When went to sit down and check out a red egg shell chair the same gentlemen came to me and the first thing he said was «this chair is $ 9,000». WOW! I had alot of word going through my head right then but my wife could tell I was upset and directed us to leave which I did and will NEVER go in there again. Instead of coming to me and telling me what each peice costs like I couldn’t afford it he should of asked me what my needs were, be more friendly and help me with meeting those needs.

As an artist and designer, I love this store. I love that they only sell authentic designs from the people who designed them. No knock-​offs, no fakes. That’s why it’s on the higher end and that’s why it’s called Design Within Reach… they’re making these pieces now accessible! No where else does that. I’ve only had great experiences here and will be back!

Purchased a very pricey rug here and the whole transaction was a night mare.
Delivered covered in plastic that was unbelievably filthy.
The delivery guy even held up his black hands for me to inspect
Needless to say the rug was damaged by all the dirt.
Plus it arrived without the promised rug pad.
Complained to store manager who was uncaring and abrupt.
They really are completely indifferent as to whether you shop DWR or not.

I’ve walked in to Design Within Reach three separate times and on only one occasion was I approached by a sales person. So, biz must be good because they don’t seem to want my $$.
On the single occasion where I talked to a sales person (some snooty dude) he asked if I was looking for something in particular. I told him that my husband and I had a new home and that we love modern furnishings. He then kind of smirked and replied with «do you like modern or is it contemporary furniture you prefer» (like I don’t know the difference). Well…, I do know the difference between modern and contemporary, thank you very much. And yes, I like modern as well as some contemporary — and yes I do have «modern» (Herman Miller, Bertoia) furniture in my home and would love to buy more — but not from you.
So, I’ll continue to shop at Room & Board (for both modern and contemporary), where their sales people are excellent and Mod Mood as well as other places (
) that want my business. Everything you can find at Design Within Reach can be found other places where the staff doesn’t look down their noses at you.

Wow! I get it, you work at DWR, the store has nice modern furniture. My wife and I have purchased furniture from DWR in the past but never again. The employe was very rude. I realize you wear skinny jeans and had a cool hipster hat on but you have no right to talk down to us in such a way. This guy actually walked up, interrupted our conversation and started to explain the designer behind the cow hide — okay. Then explains this hide comes from a European cow and Europen cows are treated much better than cows on the US, maybe so??? Then before we can respond, or ask any type of questions, we dont even know the price yet. He looks at us and tells us to go to Ikea and walks off… nice job.
Good luck DWR, times are changing. consumers don’t put up w/​this crap anymore. We have options.

Apparently I’m the Duchess, so I feel compelled to write a review.
Yes, the name implies that its merchandise is within the reach of most individuals. No, unfortunately it is not. This is a fantastic classic modern design store with unique and sometimes exclusive furniture and accessories. And they are mostly expensive. And I love them.
I have been a dwr fan for years and have had to order their merchandise via catalog or online since we did not have a studio in MT. I am so excited to be able to walk in and actually sit in the chair, couch, whatever to see if it’s comfortable, examine the fabrics and look at the scale in person. A picture and a tape measure can only go so far.
While I do not doubt those that have not had great customer service here, I cannot say that has been my experience. I have ordered several pieces, large and small, since moving here and have had excellent customer service. My husband and I purchased 5^th anniversary gifts for each other here and the designer (Mark) wrapped them beautifully with paper that looked like a piece of wood, which is the traditional gift for a fifth anniversary. And it wasn’t the same piece for each gift. He actually went out and purchased his and hers versions! It is their amazing merchandise and crazy attention to detail that will keep me coming back. I love all of the pieces I have purchased from them over the years and the quality of the items is exceptional.

This furniture store is completely overpriced. Their name is completely misleading.
First off, the employees are RUDE. This is a big turnoff. Even though I walked in knowing their stuff was expensive, I didn’t expect to be greeted with glares.
Second off, their prices are outrageous. For example, the Kartell Ghost Chair was around $ 600 — FOR ONE. You can find a new set elsewhere for the same amount. A rug I saw online for around $ 1000 was also priced around $ 2400 too. I told this employee and she immediately became defensive.
If you have the money, go here. But… shop around a bit before, you can find the same products for much cheaper too.

This is not a bad place to find modern design furniture, but prices are not as good as they seem. Furniture is not bad, but the rest does get up there. It is nice to have a store like this in the Creek area since most mod stores can be scattered.
They have some great stuff and great ideas if this is the type of furniture you are looking for. If not, don’t be scared or intimidated by prices or styles, just go around the corner to HW or Crate and Barrel. But if you have the $$$ and the mod taste, it is a must see store.

Wowzers, I wish I could afford the beautiful furniture here. My place could really use a makeover. Are you listening, powers-​that-​be? Make some drop out of the sky (gently) into my apartment, please!
I typically walk right by furniture stores like this because 1) I know I can’t even remotely afford anything inside, even something like a little lamp or footstool 2) I generally sense some ‘tude from the peeps that work there. I mean, seriously, I wear one-​stars that have seen better days. I don’t exactly dress like I shop in Cherry Creek every day. But a friend from out-​of-​town was visiting and I decided to humor him and take a look. Plus, he was wearing a business suit and tie, so I figured he made me look good.
Design Within Reach was every bit as lovely and beautiful and expensive as I expected. It made me yearn to live that catalog-lifestyle…for about 5 minutes, until I realized living in a museum isn’t my style.
That said, I was really enamored with the light fixtures, particularly that red Gothic-​looking glass chandelier, the beautiful blue, comfy couch with a roll top in the northeast corner, and any/​all of the desks. Yeah, any.
Do you think anything ever goes on sale?

I do understand that quality, designer modern furniture is very expensive. So maybe to those in the know, this place is reasonable. But for most people, the title of this store is an f’ing joke. Like others, for me this store is Design Out of Reach. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ But I do think the prices would not anger me so much, if the store had a different name.
That said, I want everything in this store and wish I could affrod it.

Wow. Bummer. Have spent many a pretty penny in this place but I’m resolved to visit places that are far happier to take my money. Attitude is everything today — clearly nobody told the snotty design manager guy. He simply couldn’t be bothered as i spent my thousand plus bucks. I recommend

I know many people call this place Design out of Reach, but I beg to differ.
Yes, their furniture is rather pricey, but they sell a mix of authorized reproductions of midcentury modern pieces and quality imported new pieces. You could buy a knockoff for a fraction of the price at other furniture stores, but the quality is not as good, they don’t last very long, and you don’t have the satisfaction of owning and sitting on a solid fine crafted piece of furniture (I am a furniture snob).
Being an architect, I know that DWR is actually cheaper than buying the same pieces from Knoll, Herman Miller and Studio Como. The trade off is that the selection of color and materials may be limited and customization is not offered.
DWR does have great sample sales now and then, and I love the events they regularly host there. The staff is always great to talk to, very knowledgeable, and very friendly.
This is a great place to window shop and stroll around — that doesn’t cost anything.
