Today, learning about wine is significantly more accessible, in large part because the wine industry has embraced the way of the world-wide-web but more so because a few pioneering wine shop proprietors have adopted a friendly approach to wine retailing. These neighborhood wine shops are catering to the novice drinker, the connoisseur, the broke college student, and the financially independent. We aim to create the same scenario in East Wash Park. r+d Wine Shop will be a place for the people of our community come to research and develop ideas about wine through a wine selection that displays the characteristics valued in wine.
History
Established in 2011.
Growing up, our exposure to adult beverages was a little one-dimensional. By one-dimensional, we mean it was malty… man-cans and shooters, with the occasional Zima on camping trips and backyard barbecues sums up the range one would come to expect to find in the fridge. Beverages of the vinous variety came in boxes and were drank, not discussed. When the time came for us to drink something more sophisticated than pink-pantie-pulldowns, we found we had each shared similar wine buying experiences. Brimming with excitement and the intent to actually understand the wine we were drinking, we found wine buying experience to be very deflating. We typically encountered one of two scenarios: 1) the liquor store clerk advised us to purchase Barefoot Chardonnay because it was on sale or 2) The wine shop proprietor snarled stuffy pronunciation corrections when we enunciated the «g» and the «r» in Viognier. There we were, eager to learn and totally rebuffed.
