The Nickel

We initially stopped in on an afternoon for our winter warmer passport deal — and it was perfect. The cocktail (manhatten) was on TAP! And it tasted wonderful! We followed it up with a variety of meats/​cheeses and some more wine, of course. The bartender was extremely kind and knowledgeable — the food was superb — and the restaurant itself just had a great ambience to it. Would love to come back for dinner sometime! Very impressed!

love this place. been here many times from hosting a thanksgiving dinner party to having a couple drinks at the bar. The service is always excellent and the food is amazing… I’m a huge burger fan and they have one of the best (always add billionaire’s bacon). great selection of craft beer and cocktails on tap, these are 2 of my favorite things!

I’m shocked how anyone could enjoy this restaurant. We had bland, overpriced, and small portioned dinners.
Started with a meat and cheese plate for just shy of $ 20 and there were two bits of cheese no more than 1″ by 2″. Very little jam to complement it, too.
The chicken pot pie was obviously made with chicken stock from a box, but still managed to charge $ 26 for it. Pass!
The Pork Loin and Chorizo was pathetic as well. Another $ 26 wasted on a ridiculously small portion or pork!
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE!

While the Nickel has good service and an inviting ambiance, the food was annoyingly bland and frustratingly unexciting. This would have been tolerable, but with entrée prices that range from $ 26 to $ 30, we were very disappointed (one would think a $ 26 Chicken Pot Pie would have more flavor than the frozen ones you can buy from the grocery. Sadly this isn’t the case).
With all of the MANY great restaurants in Denver, I strongly encourage you to spend your money elsewhere, as I am confident you’ll find the food and drinks there of far higher quality and worth the cost.

While staying at the hotel, we decided to grab drinks downstairs, and were super impressed. Fantastic cocktail list (good beer list, too!), friendly bartender, delicious drinks, quiet place to chat. Definitely check this place out.

The Nickel is very nice for being a hotel bar. They have a fantastic barrel aged Manhattan, and a fairly creative cocktail list. My girlfriend got a pear cocktail that was tasty as well.
We ordered he chartreuse plate which is cool because it’s one where you pick what you want, similarly to a sushi menu. They gave us good sized portions and it all paired together nicely.
I’d definitely recommend coming in for some drinks and appetizers. It’s not cheap, but it was definitely worth it.

What a great spot for a relaxed, quiet meal. We grabbed lunch here on a Sunday and it was quiet and comfortable. The restaurant was bright and airy being at the corner of the historic Hotel Teatro, not to mention the classy décor and comfortable ample seating. I would highly recommend the Nickel burger. Although the ingredients were similar to a normal burger, each topping was unique in it’s own way. Instead of your average cheddar, they used Funkwerks Cheddar from the Ft. Collins brewary. Instead of bacon, they use bacon marmalade cut into extra thick pieces that are sweet and savory. My only complaint is it’s a super messy burger to eat because it has a lot of «fancy» sauce mixed with the lettuce and with a brioche bun, making it a slippery situation. Great coffee/​tea drinks. You can tell the chef does an amazing job so I can’t wait to go back!

I met with a client in Denver over lunch, and let me tell you, if you need a quiet place to get ANY kind of business done, meet here.
The volume level? Suuuuuuuuuuper quiet. And plenty of space to bust out your laptop.
Located in the Iconic Hotel Teatro, the ambience is classy and comfy without being stuffy. Comfy seating, bright and open.
We both ordered one of the side salads, which I assume is a half sized The Nickel Salad.
Baby greens, radish, red onion and a vinaigrette that had somewhat of a tangy taste to it. Great start, the produce was very fresh.
While the Margarita Flatbread had fresh and vibrant tomato and basil taste without being heavy on the mozzarella, the crust was almost a little too crispy for my liking.
Ended the meal with one of the tastiest lattes I’ve ever had the pleasure of sticking in my mouth.
Valet parking in this part of Denver was a convenient, much appreciated bonus.
The service and food were both on point.
I have a feeling the Nickel might be our new meeting place for quarterly meetings. .. I’m not even mad. ;)

WOW! What a great experience and fabulous food! Annual dinner with old friends and we all ordered something different from the menu! Everything was amazing grayed the service was right on! Had the lamb share knowledge which was to die for and the short ribs and chicken pot pie was tasty! Highly recommend for a special night out. Also the Chef Sean Stengel brought out an amazing Wagu steak for the table. Like butter! Going back for more.

Since we were staying this hotel for the night, we figured we would stop in for a drink before going out for the night. Ourselves and another couple stopped in for a drink before dinner and we had a great experience. Our server was very polite and helpful with the drink menu, his recommendations were great.
I wish we would’ve had more time to enjoy dinner here but our time we cut short. In the future when we are in town we will definitely return.

I’ve selected the four rating because I’ve only been once and had a small bite to eat with two drinks. However, there was a wonderful ambiance, great food, great drinks and (most importantly) friendly service. Yes, more on the pricey end but you get what you pay for. Stopping by The Nickel on the way to a show makes for a fun and fancy date night. Worth a visit!

Lovely visit for snacks following the Symphony. The atmosphere is comfortable with leather chairs and sofas, the bar is inviting, the food was thoughtfully prepared. We had olives, cheeses, and meats ala carte and all were scrumptious. The duck confit salad was delicious as was the rice pudding. We have decided to make going to the Nickel after the Symphony a tradition.

While the food was good, it wasn’t a $ 70 breakfast-​for-​two good. Just way too expensive. The coffee was not good.

Generally Denver restaurants go in the other direction but this one has made marked improvements

While I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at The Nickel last night, having read all the reviews I guess I was suffering ‘anticipointment’ — the condition where the anticipation overwhelms the actual experience.
The service was great and our server was very attentive, the cocktail was most excellent. The food was solid, but expected and good comfort food. I had been hoping for something that surprised me a little more. Did I mention the cocktails were excellent? I had a Nickel Negroni, presentation was excellent, and the end result tasted as good as it looked.
I’d definitely reccomend dining at The Nickel, pre– or post-​show (Nickel is in the Denver theatre district), but if you’re used to NYC dining you may not have your palette pushed. Solid experience though.

For the price, this review is probably closer to a 3.5.
Service — prompt but not sure if they want to be upscale or a little more casual. Something they should work on.
Drinks — I only had one — the Seven Nickel. It was really good and really strong. Another one would have done me in. It was well balanced and I have no doubt believing their other cocktails are really good.
Charcuterie — just spend some money on this. Between two of us, we got the Iberico and prosciutto and 3 cheeses — hard, semi hard, and soft. It was a fantastic platter and probably my favorite part of the dinner. $ 11 an ounce for Iberico may seem steep but it’s a really expensive pig! All things considering, it was a decent price for what it was.
Appetizer — I got the tomato tartare and my husband got the Caesar salad. The tomato tartare was great but it came with 2 giant pieces of bread. I couldn’t eat half of it if I wanted to enjoy my dinner. Also, while the tomato is good alone, it’s Way better with the bread so I had a dilemma about finishing it. I was hoping for a hunk of burrata for a $ 15 vegetarian appetizer but there were only 5 teeny dollops which was rather disappointing. The Caesar salad was good but not anything to write home about. I think we could have done without both of those plates.
Entrée — I had the char and my husband has the Waygu steak. The char was fantastic. The savory crumble was amazing and I wish I could decipher the ingredients to recreate it in my kitchen. It came with this beautiful tart that had a roasted tomato filling topped with roasted veggies. It was supremely lovely. The steak itself was perfect — a little underdone for the husband but better under than over. Now let’s talk about what came with the steak… what was that? It was like a deconstructed baked potato. Now I get that baked potatoes aren’t the classiest side dishes but taking sour crème and cheese and turning it into a dust is not sexy either. The consistency and taste were akin to Cheetos cheese (or really any powder left at the bottom of a bag of any terrible snack). No Bueno. Just give me a damn potato with sour crème.
Over all, you’ll spend money and you’ll be mostly happy about it. The portions are decent sized so don’t over order. That’s most of my regret from the dinner.

The Nickel is Coloradical. With unique history, a focus on local, and a top notch chef, I’m a big fan.
The name is inspired by the building’s past. Close your eyes and imagine wearing an enormous fancy hat with feathers paying a nickel to ride the streetcars in 1911 downtown Denver. The restaurant space is where they would collect the nickels! Back then it was the Tramway building and I hear they still have an original vault that held the nickels somewhere in Hotel Teatro where The Nickel resides.
I loved the grilled octopus salad. Great place for my birthday lunch with the girls. I’d recommend it to impress a client or have a business meeting, too. It has a sophisticated atmosphere, delicious dishes, and we had excellent service. Bravo!

We were here for an event and tried many different plates.
Roasted kabocha squash soup: I already reaaaaally like kabocha squashes. to the point where I just steam them and eat them plain. so this soup was AMAZING for me. I dont think it’s for everyone, but I absolutely loved it!
Baby Kale Salad: mmmm I’m not a kale person. So I’d pass on this one in the future.
Lamb bolognese: YUMMM. I definitely enjoyed these :)
Seared Wild Salmon: mmm the apple and miso sauce was perfect for the salmon!
The dessert was the BEST PART!!! My favorite was the pumpkin pie panna cotta. I think it’s made from the same kabocha squash as the above mentioned soup. It was the right about of sweetness and absolutely amazing. Please try it.
the S’mores were pretty amazing too.
The staff was so nice… whenever I left to use the restroom and came back. my napkin was folded back nicely on the table… I felt bad to go more than twice hahaha. So the service is SUPER great at The Nickel :)

I had a great lunch here. I tried the squash soup, which is dairy free without the crème topping. It was delicious and not too filling or rich. I had the farro entrée with mint and carrots. It was a very light dish, but filling. It was not overly dressed and had a nice lemon vinaigrette to add some flavor. The carrots were a bit tough/​dry, but not so much that I didn’t eat them all. Throughout the meal I sipped on a couple of Bloody Mary’s, which are a tad spicy and have a nice little salad of peppers, blue cheese stuffed olives, pancetta, a tomato and celery. The dessert menu looks good, but I was too full after finishing John V.‘s french fries (which are awesome) to order anything.
We loved the ambience and had a great server. We will definitely be back! Thanks for a wonderful lunch John and Jenn!
