El Mejicano

Don’t believe any of the bad reviews — totally false. This is the BEST Mexican food around! Authentic! Just like homemade by my Tia. Service was excellent & personable. Can’t rave about this place enough. The Nachos del Mejicano were incredible! Can’t wait to come back!

The beverage menu has delicious and authentic drink options. My chorizo burrito was super tasty. Most impressive was the staff, who are so hospitable that you feel like you are dining in a friend’s kitchen. I can’t wait to go back again!

We walked out before we ordered. Requested that our table be wiped down, waitress asked us to hold on. Also very curious… why at this «new» restaurant the menus are in such bad condition? Always think its a bad sign of poor quality food if front of house presentation is careless. I can see from reading other reviews we saved ourselves some money and disappointment.

The chorizo was awesome but the service was a little slow… and we were the only ones there.

We’ve eaten at El Majicano twice over the last three months with mixed reviews. On the first evening we had an enjoyable time and my wife and I enjoyed the Fish Tacos and staff. However last night we went in and BAM right in the face you got hit with the nasty smell of sewerage. We mentioned this to the hostess and she did not know what we meant and left us feeling like we were crazy. We decided to sit in the back, which did not have any smell — but as the evening went on — the smell grew worst and worst. We complained to the staff and asked for our food to go. They basically ruined our evening — and no apology was given.

Just finished a meal that consisted of the Tamal Mejicano and enchiladas with green salsa. The food was amazing. The servers are very friendly and provide excellent service. The chef came out from the back to make sure we enjoyed our meal. The place itself is decorated very nicely and it’s in the perfect location in Denville. We will be back many times.

Finally really good Mexican food in the Denville area! We were super impressed with this place. The food is super flavorful and authentic whether you go for lunch or dinner. The fried quesadillas are my favorite, but we’ve had the churasco steak, combo fajitas, queso fundido, chile relleno and taco dorados and they’re all amazing! Really original décor so you feel like you’re in Mexico for the night and to top it all off its a BYO. The owner is very friendly and is always willing to make our experience even better however he can.
An added bonus is there’s a large section available for private events also. Two thumbs up!

We ordered almost 150 dollars of take out last weekend. Not only did we have to go back for items they forgot to give us, the portions were ridiculously small for the price. And all we got when we had to leave from our home and travel all the way back was a sorry. The food was ok.

Horrible. It tastes like microwaved food.
Tex Mex doesn’t have to be like this, the food was not fresh, the sauces available weren’t good, the chips old and greasy.
Also, the ambiance isn’t nice. It’s dark and smelly.
If you like Mexican food go to Garibaldi’s, if you like TexMex go to Chipotle, if you like trash, go here.

Helped host a private party this past weekend at this restaurant for a bridal shower and I have to rave at how wonderful everything turned out. The owner, the manager Helen, along with the servers were extremely professional and accomodating to all of our demands– which I’m embarassed to say were a lot! Not to mention bride-​to-​be was smiling from ear to ear all night which in part I thank the staff for helping us host such a pleasant and smooth event. Im kind of shocked at the poor reviews left since my experience was great! It’s definitely a place you have to check out for yourself. Way to go guys! Will be back again as a normal patron and promise not to be so demanding next time around!

It isn’t fine dining and the prices are very inexpensive… that being said, you pay for what you get here!!! It is nice to see Denville expanding its culinary options… we need more diversity with our restaurants here!!!

Only have done takeout from them but the food is good if a little price for the burritos. Usually pickup when we’re looking for something different than pizza or Chinese. Can’t speak to dining in.

Was excited to see a «Mexican» restaurant open in town. We literally sat down, tried the chips and had to go. If your chips are stale, I’m thinking I don’t even want to try your food. Scary.

nice location in the heart of denville. starter corn chips were good… add the green hot sauce to the salsa. enjoyed the fish tacos. not the usual fried fish taco, slim fit baked fish instead. meat lovers burrito was a good size, packed some heat in that bite. good value, would visit again for casual mexicano meal.

I wanted to like this place… really. I do not like leaving bad reviews — This location in Denville is great and the restaurant is a good size and well laid out. I had never been to their Rockaway location but cannot imagine there are 2 locations this poor! From top to bottom it was a disappointment. Do NOT go there unless they get their act together. The chips were way greasy. The salsa was awful. The guacamole was fair but not freshly prepared and skimpy for a table. As one reviewer said the salsa was like marinara sauce. Not a good start and it got worse. For a new place there should be an owner, host someone who looks happy to see you and checking in on your table. I do not get the feeling they want customer feedback. Our waitress was pleasant enough but left totally on her own and not very up on the menu. The food was totally sub par. Our party had fish tacos, burritos and enchiladas. The burrito was 75% beans and the chicken was dry and lacking flavor. No one liked their dish. All totally lacking flavor and poorly prepared. With Rattlesnake and this spot in Denville the town is poorly served unless you want to get a quick bite at Moe’s.

I’m going to make this review short and informative. So these are the reasons why 1. I rated this place 1 star and 2. Will likely never return.
1. We had to physically ask for silverware and a napkin after receiving our food and waiting a couple minutes after that for the waitress to return. When we were seated there was nothing at the table
2. Fork had cloudy white substance all over the back of it
3. STALE tortilla chips accompanied the toddler sized portion of the guacamole (which cost 7.50 might I add)
4. Water tastes like metal
5. It seemed while the waitress was never to be found there were employees walking around the restaurant talking to one another in hooded sweatshirts as if they were hanging around an hour before leaving. Made the place look a little low class
6. Had to walk to the front to pay, because waitress was nowhere to be found
7. Small burrito costs 11.00 $ and the lettuce, tomato, and sour cream come on the SIDE. Which I found a little asinine.
8. Two burritos and guacamole cost $ 35, you’re better off going to moes in denville. MORE food, BETTER food, chips NEVER stale, and CHEAPER!

The chips are served cold and gross thick overfried white tortillas. Salsa watery blended tomatoes from a can. Soup served cold with a huge serving spoon instead of a soup spoon– really? My husband wanted to order the taco platter with a «Choice of three tacos» but was told only one choice tonight since they were too busy! Needless to say this morning not feeling so hot :(Not going back sorry I went and wasted the money

Salsa was rather tasteless and watery. Tasted like marinara sauce to me. Guacamole is awesome. Chips were good. Ordered the lunch potion shredded chicken burrito minus the beans. chicken is very tender, rice is nicely cooked. Definitely need to work on spreading the meat all the way through, half was loaded the other half was mostly rice. All in all not bad but not great either. I love that they have Mexican coke. Probably won’t be back because the place is pretty over priced. The guacamole appetizer was 7.50, which is exactly what my entrée cost. Sorry El Mejicano your prices aren’t worth what you get.
edit: now several hours later and I’ve had severe stomach pain for the last 2 – 3 hours

So disappointed! The décor is very colorful and fun. The chips and salsa were good and fresh. I had high hopes. The food was «eh» fairly tasteless. I ordered fajitas. They give you the sizzling platter with meat, onions, peppers, some tortillas and a side of rice and beans. Nothing else to put on it like pico de gala or guacamole. I was hoping it would at least be as good as Chilis (or at least what I remember Chilis being like since it’s been a long time since I’ve been). Just flavorless. The whole time I was regretting that I bothered going out to eat. My daughter had garlic shrimp, also bland. To make matters worse, our waitress was a complete ditz. Kept forgetting things and disappearing — like no plate with the fajitas. The woman who i assume was the manager seemed completely stressed out. I didn’t say a word to her but you could see her running around snipping at the waitstaff to make sure they were on top of things. I got the bill and I noticed a $ 2 charge for beverages. We had water. When I questioned it the waitress took it off and said oh, I thought you had diet coke. There was just nothing redeeming about the place. Wild horses couldn’t get me back In there.

Let me first start by saying that I don’t like to leave bad reviews. But I have to say that this is one restaurant that I will NEVER go back to. If the food was bad and they had good service I’d consider it and think it was an off day but nothing from our meal besides the «complimentary chips» was good.
The servings were tiny and not at all worth $ 10-​$ 12. The rice was not even cooked and had no flavor. They offered to bring more rice but had to cook it and it never came out. The black beans were out of a can, salsa was not good either.
I have had Mexican food a million times and this was the worst Mexican food I’ve had. Honestly I’d rather have Taco bell and I hate Taco bell. The management needs to reconsider their cook and wait staff.
The staff knew we were disappointed and did nothing to rectify the situation. We figured we try this restaurant since we’ve been to the one in Rockaway and had good food and great service. Obviously not the same, not even close!
Unless they change quickly this place will go down fast this way!
Giving 2 stars only because the décor was nice.
