The Taffy Depoe

«Free samples!» is enough to bring in most people. There are signs the try to limit the sampling to a few of the very many flavors, but the crowd is too big to control as many people sample lots of flavors. I tried and bought their strongest cinnamon flavor, and a couple of others.
But when I look around in this store in a whale-​watching city, I see thousands of small off-​white colored bits, and am reminded of the Exploding Whale that happened in November 12, 1970 down the road near Florence (event is on youtube:

These bits of taffy, chewy and stretchy like whale blubber must have been the size of the pieces the Highway Department thought would result by blowing up (towards the sea) an eight ton, 45-​foot-​long stinky, rotting, beached sperm whale with 20 cases of dynamite. The theory was that seagulls and crabs would eat the resulting tiny pieces. Instead, it blew towards the crowd watching the event from a bluff, and small bits and large pieces of body parts and liquid fell from the sky on top of the screaming, scattering crowd, and one 3-​foot by 5-​foot piece of foul-​smelling, rotting whale blubber crushed the top of a big Oldsmobile parked ¼ mile away. No seagulls could be seen in the area for awhile. The remaining carcass still needed to be buried afterward (a ‘sperm’ bank?).

Many locals along the coast are tired of hearing about and telling the exploding whale story, much like the taffy staff doesn’t like talking about the origin of the term «salt water taffy» and explaining the seawater is not used in the ingredients. P. S. It doesn’t help to bring up the trivia that Tonya Harding was born the same day as the exploding whale.

Bits of Advice:
1 — Just like the Engineer who bought too much dynamite to blow up the whale, don’t buy too much taffy, or at least don’t eat too much taffy (or, you too might end up the size of a whale). Whale Blubber calories for 100g (1cut) is 689Cal, about 4 times as much as taffy.
2 — Don’t get more than you want to eat in a day or two. They tend to stick to the wax paper more over time. They also stick to your teeth.
3 — Do not stick a firecracker in one to see if it will explode into tiny pieces.
