Description

Specialties

Signal-Return connects the community to traditional + emergent forms of printing as well as offers a resource for entrepreneurial artists + designers to produce for retail clients. Our overarching goal is to create a hive for dynamic visual production.

Signal-Return is a creative enterprise at the intersection of art and commerce that combines the back-end production process with a front-end retail store and gallery. Intermingling academics, curation, and preservation with apprenticeship, the venue stands as a multi-use center for fine art, design, craft, and literary arts.

The collaborative spirit of Signal-Return will motivate participants to stretch their reach, as they expand their toolkits, vocabularies, and means of production.

History

Established in 2011.

A question was posed: «Why is there not a letterpress storefront in Detroit – a city with a long-standing tradition of ground-breaking music, arts and culture?» A group assembled and selected 1345 Division Street as the home of Signal-Return – the space that formerly housed the Johanson-Charles Gallery. The open floorplan of this storefront location incorporates workshops, galleries, an exhibition space, archives and retail operations.
