Our experience with Twiddy was one of delight with all aspects. We planned a family reunion and contacted Twiddy to help find a venue. I think we were very fortunate to find one of the finest places that was available in Duck and Twiddy made the process very smooth from beginning to end.
It was our first time renting a house for a full week at the Outerbanks so there were many questions about the house, the area, the weather, etc., etc. We never had a problem reaching a Rep and getting the answers to the questions we had.
Check-​in was quick and included a small gift for all the Mother’s in our group since it was their Day (May 8^th). There was some maintenance that had to be done at the house and began before our arrival but they were very careful not to inconvenience anyone.
Five Stars all the way.

First time renting on the outter banks. We had a great time with family and friends. The check in went well with good directions to our house which was in the 4×4 area. The house was ok. Nothing outstanding but adequate. This house needs some up dating and clean up on the out side. Deck furniture was filthy. Unable to use most of the chairs on the decks. The dryer stopped working about half way through the week. Notified Tweddy but the dryer was never repaired. This was major inconvenience since some of our family was coming a long distance and had stop overs without clean cloths. We called several times and no one said that they would not be fixing the dryer. If they had said that we might have looked for a laundry mat. Just poor customer service in my opinion. This all occurred in mid October not at the height of the summer season.
Besides this issue we still had a great time and can’t wait to return next year to a different house.

Poor customer service!
We have rented from many different property management companies in OBX. Twiddy was by far the worst when it came to customer service and follow through. The house we rented had a broken dishwasher. Things break and I understand. But I don’t understand how you can promise a call back four different times and never return a single call once. There are many property management companies in Duck. I will certainly be choosing another company next time.

Could not agree any more with Mark W. For the amount of money we spent to stay in one of Twiddy’s rentals, you would think they would be able to afford maintaining the outside/​inside…
Our house was literally INFESTED with spiders and other critters. When we called the office to have somebody come out they said to us «oh, nobody warned you about the midges?» Apparently midges are not spiders, but they have eight legs and spin webs. Either way, when we asked to have someone come power wash the house they said to us «there is a hose at your house, you’re more than welcomed to spray it.»
Completely thrown off guard by the lady on the phone telling me this, I’m also watching my sister point out that the stove is broken. The handle on the stove is dangling off, and needed to screwed back together. We managed to fix the stove.
After a few days of pestering the office they told me that they put a ticket in for the house to not only be power washed, but also sprayed… this never happened. We were not able to utilize the house that we payed to have as our home away from home. I couldn’t use the screened in porch, hang towels to dry, sit on any outside chairs, outdoor showers, grill, or peacefully walk in and out of the house. After staying at 109 Marlin Drive, I now cringe if I feel anything graze against my body hair.
The inside of the house was decent. It was like we were living in a nice spiderweb.
I feel embarrassed and played by Twiddy. I will not be returning next year as one of their customers.

4^th year in a row for us in Duck. You would think for 8,500.00 a week for a beach house, they would clean the patios and decks. Ours is literally covered with Spiders and bugs. Not just the normal few but I counted over 100 webs on our decks and balcony. The pool pump can’t keep up or it’s broken but that basically keeps our kids out of the pool for the final few days. Very disappointed in them. They should have a quality checker and someone to tell the owners of the house to keep it in better shape or remove it from their listings so others don’t get this particular house.

Been renting their summer homes for 13 YEARS and have always been thrilled with Twiddy!!! Always recommend them to others. Have even rented during tropical storm with power outages and they have ALWAYS taken good care of us. It is obvious they are a family company who value customer service. Would never even consider renting from anyone else.
Plenty of linens, towels, and flexibility on check out. We moved from NY to MN and we still will make the trek to OBX because of our experiences with Twiddy. We will remain loyal customers!!!

Fantastic customer service and the electronic communication was spot on. Had a great experience renting a house in Duck, N.C. and highly recommend them to anyone staying in that area.

Stayed here for a week, they are very slow to respond to maintenance requests. Even after having one of the guests who knows the owner of the unit contact twiddy directly to speed up the response rate we still went over 24 hours with no hot water.

At Bubbas Beach House Courtesy of Twiddy Realty good times were had. The Coronas flowed like Mississippi River, the burgers were never ending and the wild horses of Corolla were like our next door NEIGHbors (get it, neigh? HA!).
This place was a 12 Bedroom, 11 and two and a Half bath double kitchen pool wielding hot tub bubbling extravaganza. We came to conquer this land and plant our party flag and this beach house was our ship. The 16 of us had the time of our lives. 2 minutes from our feet in the water we visited the beach daily. Wild horses roam and relax on the beach just like the humans and coexist as one. Toads, Foxes, snakes and deer round out your wildlife but never became a nuisance. The house had a pool table, ping pong table, two bars, TVs everywhere, direct tv, and plenty of windows to enjoy the sunrise and sunset. This house was more than adequate to accommodate 16 people looking to make memories but there was a few problems we dealt with.
1) The Wifi didn’t work and this is not a place you get any kind of service at. Make sure to load up on music in case you can’t get Pandora or YouTube.
2) Our fridges didn’t work well and one gave out completely spoiling some of our food and wasting some precious supplies and dollars and put us in a position to live out of a cooler more than we wanted.
3) The water to the bathrooms kept shutting off making showering and flushing a pain in the ass.
4)As nice as it was, everything was a bit dated and there’s wasn’t enough clear instruction on how everything worked like whole house music, the TVs and anything that needed turned off and on.
Overall though, I traveled with people who wouldn’t let nothing ruin friendship and a good time and we made the best of those few mishaps and made memories for a lifetime and in the end, that’s what a beach house is for. Fix these few problems before next years trip and we just might have a perfect and flawless vacation. Thanks Bubba and Twiddy!

Woulnd’t be fair to drop them further because it’s now been 7 – 8 straight houses with Twiddy, but they did drop since for the first time I’ll be going with another outfit.
I placed a deposit on a house back September, with the first payment due at the end of October. I asked for an extention, and I was granted one — thank you Twiddy. I received an e-​mail stating that my reservation hold would be released at 4PM on that day. So I put a reminder in my Outlook to make sure I paid it. Problem is, I received a voicemail first thing that morning stating that due to non-​payment, the house has been released. What happenned to the 4PM deadline folks? So I called and they offered to hold the house for me until 2PM. But then after giving it some thought the circumstances just got me annoyed — who does that? So where I previously stated «thank you Twiddy», I now state Brindley Beach. We’ll see what happens.

We stayed at the old Dupont mansion the weekend after Labor Day and it was unbelievable. The house (mansion, really) was a great mix of old luxury, such as stained glass sky lights, mixed with modern amenities. The bedrooms were spacious and the kitchen was perfectly located to be a hangout for the couples that went. The living rooms (both upstairs and downstairs) were great for the kids to play in.
Aside from all this, the service at Twiddy continues to be second to none. Every house I’ve stayed in with them, three now, have been impeccably maintained and the customer service couldn’t be better. No need to look further if you’re planning a trip to the OBX.

I vacationed with Twiddy & Company again about a month or so ago. I can honestly say that I wholeheartedly disagree with the negative reviews thus far; these guys get it right.
1.) Check — in; it was a breeze. They send out quite a few reminders around check in procedures, policies, times, etc. No fuss, no muss. Went incredibly smoothly, and with a smile.
2.) The House — Was it perfect? No, but they made it right; even though every single issue was beyond the Twiddy staff’s control. It wasn’t their fault that the homeowner made the audio/​visual system incredibly hard to control or use; but they figured it out, and were MORE than happy to do so. Every single request (and I’m not exaggerating that) was met with a smile.
3.) The followup — We made regular trips past the Twiddy office, and they remembered our name, what we were up to, and asked if they could assist or make recommendations. It was like having a crew of family to take care of you.
4.) The reservation process — have you seen the website? Gorgeous. Easy. Intuitive.
Vacation rentals are not an easy business; and I’ve never been let down by these guys. I dare you to find anyone that does it better than them in the Outer Banks; or even comes close. Well done, Twiddy & Company.

I’ve rented from Twiddy previously without issue. Their website is great, staff friendly, and it is not until recently that I had an issue with them. This year I stayed in a house that was not up to par and informed Twiddy of such on their solicited review card. It was disappointing to see that they choose to filter the customer reviews and only post the «good» ones that will get their properties rented. Their failure to disclose true reviews is just as disappointing as the house I rented from them. If they don’t want honest feedback then they shouldn’t ask for it. So, renter beware… when you see time gaps between reviews that could very well mean the missing reviews are not so great.

My review of Twiddy in Duck is solely based on their check-​in practices. I didn’t realize how bad they were until I rented from another company and saw how the process COULD be handled.
First off, Twiddy views early check-​in as a money-​maker. I don’t have a problem with that, but I can’t understand why they won’t release the keys until the exact 1:00 pm early check-​in time. Here are a few examples from the past 7 years.
1. My family arrives early to beat the traffic and we paid for early check-​in. We’re told that the house isn’t ready and give them our cell phone number. 1:00 comes with no call or text message. I go back into the office (after waiting outside) and the keys are immediately given to me.
2. Same deal — arrive early and provide cell number. This time, I went back in at 12:45 (no call or texts) and the clerk reluctantly gave me the keys with the explanation that it would take me 15 minutes to get to my house so I wouldn’t physically be in the house before 1:00. ?#!*##@! Is there a local Currituck County law that prevents renters from entering the house before the exact check-​in time? Now I know to keep pestering the check-​in desk since they won’t call or text when the house is actually cleaned and inspected.
3. Forgot to add early check-​in but friends rented a house down the street and they did have early check-​in. I was told my house wasn’t ready and hung out at my friends house watching for the cleaning crew or a supervisor. No one visited the house in the interim but I got a message after 4:00 PM that I could now pick up the keys. So the house was actually ready well before I received the call.
4. Very different scenario. I had been in contact with the owners of the rental house and they agreed to allow me to rent three days of the week prior to my full week. I called Twiddy to add the extra days to my rental and the clerk immediately pushed me to pay for early check-​in. When I explained that the house would be empty from Saturday — Thursday, he gave me an honest reply — «Good point. The house will be ready whenever you arrive. No sense paying for early check-​in in this case.» When I arrived that Thursday, the check-​in clerk told me I would have to wait until 4:00 PM to get the keys since I didn’t pay for early check-​in. I recounted my conversation with the reservations clerk and added that I had spoken to the owners about arriving on Thursday. Suddenly, the story changed. I was told that a cleaning crew needed to visit the house to check for ‘toilet bowl rings’ since it had sat empty since the previous Saturday. I calmly asked the clerk if she was actually going to make my family sit in the rental office until 4:00 even though the house was already cleaned. She hastily consulted with a manager and reluctantly gave me the keys (toilet bowl rings and all). I confirmed that I was the only person checking in that day.
My experience with other rental companies on the Outer Banks has been quite different. The process went something like this: «Let me check… great news! Your house is ready. Here are the keys. Have a great vacation!» Or sometimes it’s «Sorry, your unit is still being cleaned. We’ll text you as soon as it’s ready.» And I actually receive a text BEFORE the official check-​in time.
I have no issue with paying for early check-​in. My issue is with Twiddy holding the keys when the house is ready to go. Why would they aggravate their customers instead of providing customer delight? Instead of talking about all of the things they do right, I’m writing about the thing that ticks me off at the very beginning of my vacation.

Excellent company to deal with. We were a little nervous when we got to the house a little early (to beat traffic coming into the outerbanks) and the renters from the previous week were still in the house (after check out time) It looked like a frat part: a ton of kids with a lot of alcohol, beer and trash being emptied out of the house. But after the cleaning crew came in and we checked in you would of never known it (except for the 80 bags of trash by the trash cans, which twiddy came and removed) the cleaning crew let the kids swim in the pool as they had been on the beach all morning and wanted a change up. The house was clean, beautiful and well equipped. We loved that all the beds were made when we came and I believe twiddy bought all new towels and sheets as they were all thick and nice. All the employees from check in to check out were helpful and very nice. We will use twiddy in the future as we come down twice a year!

We have rented with Twiddy four (4) times in the last 2 years and will not rent from anyone else. Always have experienced excellent service (from phone calls, to Duck front desk and maintenance) and we are currently pouring over all the houses to see which one we will use when we return in September. These guys/​gals have been top-​notch. Click or give them a call and see for yourselves.

We rented a beachfront house on the Outer Banks from Twiddy. We rented this same house several years ago thru another realtor. It’s a great property, well located and well maintained.
Twiddy, the management company, was just awful. They made what should have been a fun week a major disappointment. Twiddy dropped the ball completely on the management end. They had all winter to check the contents to ensure they were adequate for 20 people. We had to waste 2 of our 6 full days getting the place up to speed. There were not enough dishes, flatware or glasses. Most dishes were chipped. Cookware was disgusting. Some pots lacked handles. Most needed major cleaning or were just too stained/​caked to even try to clean.
The upstairs refrigerator did not dispense ice. The downstairs one did not cool. When the service person came, a part of another day wasted, he said the downstairs freezer was so iced up that cold air could not reach the refrigerator. We had to throw out almost all the food we put in it. He couldn’t fix the upstairs one.
Twiddy’s personnel responded well to our spoken complaints but why should we have to go through such an awful experience and lose so much time and have our food spoil when we were paying over $ 12,000 for the week? We just lived with the thin and, on several beds, short sheets they provided. Even Day’s Inn probably provides better towels than the see-​through ones they gave us. We compensated on our own for the wands missing from some blinds. We cleared the 6 garbage pails that were strewn around the driveway without comment.
Almost all of us needed wi-​fi but all we got was a terrible community-​shared wi fi system which most of the time we couldn’t get on. The Twiddy phone rep said the house should have had its own wi-​fi but couldn’t locate it in her records. Their website specifies that the house has wi-​fi. When we rented this same house several years ago it was managed by another firm and we had an outstanding experience. Twiddy took a good piece of the rent we paid but clearly wants it all to go to their bottom line. Shame on you Twiddy for ruining our vacation.
I sent these comments to Twiddy by email and got a reply saying how delighted they were with their employees’ responses to us. They also offered us a $ 50 coupn toward a future rental from them! Sorry Charlie. We won’t use you again.

This the the second time we’ve stayed in a Twiddy home and will definitely be our last. Even after a sub-​par first time, we were willing to give a second go because it was minor stuff (pictures on website not matching reality). Shame on us. I should have known things weren’t going to be good when I called to see if an early check in was available (to buy, even though a lot of other companies offer that for free — hi Outer Beaches Reality!) and was met with attitude.
Somebody in our party thought check in was earlier than it was and had made travel plans accordingly. The woman I spoke to said, before offering any helpful info, «Well, I don’t know why they would have thought THAT!». Which was met was total silence by me, as I wondered «Seriously?» I was calling to PAY YOU MORE MONEY. What I should have said was «Gloria, we (all 18 of us) looked at 15 properties before we all went against our better collective judgement and chose a home represented by Twiddy. You guys have the latest check in and somebody messed up the time, so please, we beg your pardon».
Because of the size of the house, early check in wasn’t available because it takes extra time to clean the home and make sure it’s ready for guests. Makes total sense, that could have been explained without commentary.
We stayed in Seas and Quakers. During the first 4 days of our trip, the pool, hot tub, theater, and phone were either too filthy to use (pool), not installed (theater) or broken (hot tub/​land line). By mid week, the first floor reeked of cat urine.
Upon arrival Saturday, we were told that the pool cleaner’s sweeper broke — come 5 pm Sunday, the pool was still wasn’t clean. We called Sunday 10 am just to see when the cleaner was coming, so the kids didn’t stir up the sand/​sea creatures, which were mainly on the shallow end steps. Angela (who was very polite) said somebody would be out by 3pm and if not to call back. When we called at 5pm because nobody had come out, we were told by another person «These things happen, I am sure the cleaner didn’t want his sweeper to break and ruin your vacation».
The pool guy’s sweeper issue is not my problem and really trying to make it sound like I’m a jerk for not being more understanding isn’t what you would call good customer service. Especially in light of the issue being caused by a poorly equipped vendor — not a natural disaster or emergency. Somebody magically appeared after this call to «try something». The pool was clean an a half hour later.
We also let them know this phone call that the theater room didn’t work. Like at all. Monday AM — the tech guy for the theater came. Seems the ENTIRE system was disconnected in a room that was locked. It appears the projector was new and the system was never wired. He hooked it up and the home’s land line stopped working.
Wednesday, we had to go see them because part of the lower floor began to reek of cat urine and the hot tub never got warmer than 94 degrees. The cat urine smell is worst in a bedroom. It was mild upon checking in, but progressively got worse. They offered to deodorize the carpet in the bedroom — the couple staying in that room declined because they’d have to pack everything up and be displaced second to last day of the trip. My point in mentioning it here is just that the carpet was probably «deodorized» before we got here, it didn’t solve the problem — so there is a much larger issue that needs addressed — like locating the actual source of the smell. I am not taking this issue into the rating — otherwise it would be a 1 star.
The hot tub/​landline repairs are to come tomorrow. Who knows what he will discover or if he will be able to repair anything. At this point, nobody even cares.
We’ve never stayed in a home where so many things haven’t worked it’s kind of a joke now. The work orders (aside from the pool) have been done in a timely manner (another reason this place isn’t getting a 1 star rating) — but the fact that there was been 5 for major amenities, in as many days make me question how well the home is maintained to begin with.
Yeah, things happen — we get that. We’ve vacationed with several other companies — Joe Lamb, Carolina Designs, Midgette, Sun, Outer Beaches Reality — and you’ll see that only Twiddy gets negative reviews.

My family and I have been renting homes in the Outer Banks for 15+ years. This was the first home we rented from Twiddy. It will also be our last.
We chose an oceanfront home and were excited in the months/​weeks leading up to our vacation. The photos of the house looked great and we were pleased that the home allowed dogs. The process from making the reservations right up through receiving the keys went very smoothly — the Twiddy website, staff and systems were excellent in the early going, as other Unilocal reviews have noted.
The problem came when we got to the house.
To say that the house no longer resembled the photos we relied on in choosing it is an enormous understatement. Sometime between when they took photos of the house for the Twiddy website and when we arrived, it looked like someone from Hoarders showed up and took over the place.
I don’t begrudge Twiddy using photos to show the house in its most flattering light, but the difference between what we thought we were renting and what we got was appalling.
How appalling? So appalling that we left the day after we arrived. It was so bad, literally, that we just left.
This is not a common occurrence for us. In the 15+ years that I’ve been coming to the Outer Banks, we’ve never left a vacation house in the middle (let alone the beginning) of our week. Never. That’s why I was motivated to write this review.
We felt a little misled by the photos, but we understood the risks of renting a home you’ve never seen in person. It might not look like the pics. We get that.
In fact, on the morning we left and turned in the key, we didn’t ask for or think we were owed our money back. We did expect at least a pretense of customer service. What we got instead was an explanation by the Twiddy employee of why we were wrong to be appalled by the house.
This is just rotten customer service. It would not have cost Twiddy one thin dime to simply say, «hey, we’re sorry this place didn’t live up to your expectations.» But they didn’t. There are a lot of rental companies at the Outer Banks. We won’t be using this one again.
As a post script, the morning we left we got on the phone and rented another house that same day from a different rental company. It was a fine house and we spent a wonderful week there.
