Mathew S. Burrows 1890 Inn

Delighted.

We stayed here during our wedding weekend. It was a wonderful, spacious place. We felt very comfortable during our stay. I think it’s a bargain, too.

By far, this is the BEST B&B experience I have ever had.
Imagine spending a long day walking to and around Canal Park, eating oneself silly, and then walking home in the cold one was not prepared for, also jacket-​less. Pretty exhausted probably, yeah? And then imagine coming home, shlepping back to the kitchen, and finding hot water ready for tea and a glorious bundt cake for a snack… just waiting for you.
That is what the 1890 Inn is like.
The house is beautiful, with wonderful woodwork and fixtures. Almost everything is original… That said, it’s not pristine, it’s not fully restored, and it’s not perfect. And that is really why I loved it. It is truly antique in a way that most B&Bs fail to appreciate– a true antique is never in mint condition and it’s the flaws that give it its character and its charm. I was not afraid to sit in chairs for fear of breaking them or pissing off an antique-​obsessed innkeeper. I felt entirely at home enough to come down in my sleeping knickers and have tea by the sitting room fireplace with gorgeous Boyfriend (who sadly was fully clothed.)
The rooms are all sweetly outfitted with the kind of furniture I’d actually want to own. The bathroom fixtures are all original and cool. They have bottle openers and wine glasses in the room, which came in handy when Boyfriend and I decided to take a bath in the clawfoot tub and have wine, which resulted mostly in overheating and tipsiness, but was still awesome. They also put lots of Duluth travel literature in the room, in case you want to read up on stuff to do. Just every little touch made me feel welcome and comfortable.
Did I mention that the innkeeper is a virtual historian and one of the sweetest men I’ve ever met? Did I mention that his breakfasts will be legendary in your mind, the kind that fill you up with such happiness and fullness that you don’t to spend money on lunch and dinner will have to wait til 8?
I don’t even know how else to sing the praises of this inn other than it’s the only place I will ever want to stay in Duluth. I really felt like I was at home and I miss it, even though it was only for two nights.
