Really great Dominican food. I used to drive all the way to Newark when I wanted good pernil. The food is every bit as good as you get in Newark, but it’s about twice the price. I guess that’s because of Dumont’s high rents and taxes.

The food here is exquisite. Never a disappointment. I have frequented more times than I can remember. Authentic, flavorful and truly home-style Dominican cuisine. My favorite locale for my Dominican fix. Service is swift and always warm and friendly.

Good authentic Dominican food is hard to come by. lula”s is definitely the real deal !!! The food ALWAYS taste FANTASTIC& fresh… their MOFONGO is spectacular, even without sauce… breaded steak, bistec encebollado, Ox tails, sancocho, sopa de pollo, pastelitos, chicharrones de pollo, to name but a few of the dishes we’ve tried &LOVED… Now the PERNIL… OMG the PERNIL… It comes off the bone from such tenderness… it’s seasoned JUSTRIGHT…& tastes SLAMMIN… I’m getting hungry writing this review… The staff at 20 E. Madison is GREAT… once they et to know you, it feels like you’re visiting relatives… you know, the ONES that COOKREALLYGOOD… The owners are ALSOFABULOUS, & when not too busy make the rounds to the tables to welcome you & make sure everything is OK… That is RARE in this day & age… You will not be disappointed with anything you order from this place!!!

I ordered online delivery from Lula’s one day out of curiosity. Sadly, the tripe soup(only available on Sunday at $ 5) was sold out and they called me to apologize and offer another substitute. Though, they only spoke Spanish. Thankfully, my friend is Spanish or else it would’ve been such a mess! We split the fried sweet plaintains $ 3, which was pretty good. As good as other places I’ve ordered it. The friend had roasted pork mofongo $ 10.95, which was a little steep but he really enjoyed it. I got the baked chicken dinner special $ 7.99, which was definitely worth the price. I highly recommend the dinner specials to save some costs. All the portions were HUGE and we had enough for lunch the next day even!

Down to earth food and atmosphere! Great place for some home cooked Latin food. Kinda feels like you are at one of the restaurants in DR, outside of the resort.

Stopped in around 7:30 on a Saturday night. All of the tables were empty and 2 employees were chatting it up with their friends. I stood there and waited and waited and waited and obviously ignored. Not even a «I will be right with you». I walked out and will gladly spend my money someplace else.

mad disrespectful staff. maybe train your workers on some common courtesy and basic customer service. The positive reviews on here are fake, let’s get with the program people it’s 2015.

I went to Lula’s last Sunday and ordered chicken stew(pollo guisado) with moro(rice mixed with beans). Both had really good flavor. However, the chicken stew did not have all parts of the chicken, as in other restaurants. Their chicken stew only had drumsticks and chicken backs. I first asked for breast and they plainly said«no breasts». I then asked for some thighs and kept a drumstick she had already placed in my container. As she gave me the«thighs», I was pretty sure they were bony chicken backs and told her so, but she insisted she gave me thighs. Long and behold, when my sister and I ate the food, we had three chicken backs(with almost no meat) and a drumstick. I regretted not cooking that day and felt ripped off!

This is our favorite place for pernil, mofongo, or when we’re in the mood for Latin food in general. The owners are Dominican, so while they DO have the usual Latin plates like cubanos, bistec sandwiches, chicharrón, rice and chicken, pernil, etc., the flavor profile and menu is primarily Dominican. Please keep this in mind when you’re dining here and expecting authentic Cuban-style pernil or tostones with mojito sauce — Cuban food is not their specialty. El Caney in Bergenfield, on the other hand, is excellent at Cuban. Lula’s makes my favorite pernil and even adds the crispy skin in for me, too. A few Dominican dishes they have daily: breakfast(salami/queso frito), mangú(mashed plantains), moro negro, mofongo, mondongo(beef tripe soup), white bean soup. Their mofongos are crispy and flavorful while moist on the inside. I wasn’t too fond of their pernil mofongo because the ratio of plantain and meat was 15:85(REALLYMEATY). Don’t get me wrong, I love my meat but I also enjoy biting into the plantain in my mofongo. The shrimp mofongo is a plain mofongo drenched in a buttery garlic sauce with sauteed large shrimp. I don’t really care about shrimp, but this is delicious! Try their plain or shrimp mofongo. Ask for extra garlic sauce. Their sancocho(Dominican stew) is my favorite dish, hands down. They only have it on the weekends. I’ve had homemade sancocho made for me in dutch ovens by generous Dominican friends and Lula’s beats theirs. If you’re in the mood for Dominican food, or tasty Latin food in general but aren’t sure of what kind of Latin, go to Lula’s Latin Cuisine.

No plate necessary. Open lid. Grab fork. There was no way I was going to torture myself any longer waiting to inhale this awesomeness. I’m surprised I even took the time out between fork fulls to take a picture. The ropa vieja and pernil are my favs and must be accompanied by their consistently perfectly made maduros. Get there early for the ropa because they’re always sold out by 5 or 6pm. Crazy, right?! If that isn’t a testament as to how incredible it is then I don’t know what is. Oh by the way, Thursday and Sunday are ropa vieja days so mark your calendar, don’t take anything out to defrost that night and call ahead if you can’t get there before the mad dinner rush. You’ll be happy you did. I can’t tell you how many times my husband procrastinated, jeopardizing my happiness in the process and wound up calling me from Lula’s to tell me they were out of ropa. Happy wife, happy life? Call ahead.

Not sure what the rave reviews or 4 – 5 stars are about. Our office oredered from here for lunch, and no one was thrilled. I had the pernil, which I was excited about becuase not many places that deliver have pernil on the menu. Well, it tasted like plain, wet pork. There was no garlic, or salt, no seasoning whatsoever. The rice and beans were ok, but again, not much flavor. I also ordered a side of tostones — those did not come with any mojito(anywhere else I’ve ordered tostones from come w/mojito. They are dry and need it) AND they were definitely NOT home made. These were from a box, frozen, maybe from Goya. I love tostones and I can totally tell the difference! I gave 2 stars, being generous, because the food wasn’t disgusting. Just very bland and not worth ordering from again. For Latin(Cuban) food, we’ll stick to Cuban Eddie’s which is also in Dumont.

Anything they serve is amazing. Lula can cook! I don’t like eating stewed beef that much. But here, it’s a winner. If you’re looking for a great deal — excellent food, clean restaurant, wonderful staff — then this is the place for you. BTW, they also have a newly-added bar and they have a DJ on Saturdays. They’re open until 3AM and admission is free.

Gave it a shot and not too impressed. Maybe I just hit them on a bad day. Food was not up to par with similar places in the West New York area.

My friend and I ordered the Tuesday special: 1 Beef stew and 1 Chicken stew. It was great! A real big plate of home cooked chicken stew with rice for less than $ 10 bucks. We shared a bit of each, we were both stuffed with plenty left over. Our order was for delivery and it came super quick. Very happy!

At first I was reluctant to accept that another restaurant was opening in this area but Lula’s has disproved this original thought. I’ve been to Lula’s many times and the food is always great. A $ 5 lunch special here consists of your choice of main entrée, your choice of rice and beans, and a can of soda or water bottle. I almost always get the chicken with white rice and black beans which has never failed to satisfy me. The chicken is perfectly cooked and seasoned, the rice is soft and tasty, and the beans are flavorful. Lula’s also has some of the best empanada’s and burgers. The meat tastes very fresh and is cooked to perfection on both these items. The interior of Lula’s is very pleasant and has many tables to eat at. The service is usually quick and careful. My only complaint would be that the one gentleman that works there(presumably the manager) never seems happy to serve you. I’ve never even seen him smile and he always looks displeased. Other than that, Lula’s is a great place to eat.

So I gave them another try last night. My husband and I had company over. We ordered churasco, rice and beans, mofingo. Omg! It took forever for the food to be ready. The churasco was gross, the chiciarones were burned. The platanos were good bit how can you go wrong with that? Disappointment once again. Never again.

My dude and I at there a couple of days ago. We wanted to sample their offerings, so we ordered way too much food, all of which we enjoyed. We split a cuban sandwich and I gotta say, as much as I love El Caney in Bergenfield, this one takes the best cuban sandwich award. Awesome. I had the mofungo with chicken. I’d never had it before, but it was something I had been wanting to try since seeing Anthony Bourdain’s tour of Puerto Rico. Mofunogo was supertasty(how can you go wrong with fried, then smashed & seasoned plantain?) and chicken was great. My dude had the oxtail– very good– along with yellowrice and blackbeans. Also very good(though in a head-to-head, I think El Caney’s win the black bean award). We shared a plate of tostones– good, but I wasn’t super crazy about the mojito sauce served with them. Lula’s makes its own hot sauce– good stuff– very hot! All that food, and I think our bill was less than $ 30(plus we had lunch for the next day). We’ll be back.
