Chapel Hill Tire Car Care Center specializes in auto repair and maintenance for imports and domestics. We are the first hybrid certified repair shop in the Triangle. We are able to service all hybrids from Prius to Hybrid Civics and Camry. Established in 1953.

Chapel Hill Tire Car Care Center has been servicing Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Durham for 60 years. We have preserved a culture of small town customer service and mixed in state of the art auto repair. We have four locations in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Northern Chatham, and Durham. We are a national leader in sustainable businesses practices and the first Green Plus Certified auto repair facility in the country. Was visiting Raleigh from out of town to do some Christmas shopping and my ’92 overheated due to a leak in coolant line. I used Unilocal to find nearby repair shops and Chapel Hill Tire (Durham location) was within 2 miles. When I lived in Chapel Hill in the 90s they became my shop after repairing a muffler on my Ford Bronco for way less than the quotes from bigger chain shops (Chapel Hill location). Just managed to make it there but after closing time. I used the early bird envelope to drop my keys off. They called me in the morning and had diagnosed the problem (leaking o-​ring let oil drip onto the coolant line causing it to rupture). They had me back on the road by late afternoon despite being busy that day.

The online appointment process was easy. The staff is very professional and courteous. the shuttle service made it so easy and convenient. What’s best of all is that they beat the Toyota dealer by a mile on an estimate to fix my hybrid Prius. Will definitely be back!

A few weeks ago I was driving from Raleigh for a camping trip to a remote part of Kentucky when my car developed a snag. It would start shaking violently at a specific speed. I suspected it had something to do with my tires as I just had them rotated. I did not want to cancel the trip nor did I want to drive through Appalachia and risk a break down in the middle of nowhere. I stopped by Chapel Hill Tires (Durham location) as they were right off I-​40. These guys were very busy, but they understood my desperation and rapidly diagnosed and fixed the problem at no charge. I would definitely take my business to them the next time I need tires.

They really don’t seem to be experts with hybrids from my experience.
I decided to come here due to the fact that they advertise hybrid-​car certified mechanics. I wanted to get a pre-​purchase inspection on a 2005 Prius, so I decided to give it a shot for $ 100.00. After driving 30 minutes from the dealer specifically to go to this place, I got lunch, and only took about an hour and 20 minutes for the entire inspection.
After the inspection, I was given a sheet a paper with 5 things that were the main issues with the car. The mechanic told me the rear brakes needed new rotors and new pads in the next 6,000 miles, so he did not write it on the sheet (which I didn’t understand why). He also said the front brakes were about 60% worn. I decided to write this myself on the sheet to tell the dealer.
When I got into the car to drive-​off, I realized no prices were included in the quote. I went back inside and waited a while to get the quoted prices for all the fixes. I thought this was kind-​of strange that they didn’t give me this in the first place.
Later on, I ended up buying the car and the dealer was going to replace the back brakes. I buy the car, drive off with my current car to wait while the dealer replaced the rotors and brakes. The dealer calls me and tells me that Priuses do not have rear rotors and pads, but a drum brake. Well, that makes me feel pretty stupid and I am almost sure I lost money on the deal for the car for not knowing this. How could Chapel Hill Tire Car Care Center quote me on a part for my car that it does not even have? This seems extremely sketchy, and now I do not even trust that they checked the rest of my car thoroughly.
Overall, do not go here for quotes. I even emailed them before writing this review and never got a response back. I’m not looking to get my money back, I just wanted to let them know they quoted me on a part (rear rotors on a Prius) that my car did not even have. Maybe come here for an oil change, but don’t trust them for anything else.

Disingenuous marketing tactics regarding free rotation/​balancing/​etc. for life of tires purchased from them. Last three visits the advisors ‘forgot’ and charged for it. The most recent visit the advisor told me balancing is not included… yet it says it is right on the invoice. I guess the new approach is to see how stupid the customers are. No truth in advertising, and tactics no different than taking car to a dealer. Longtime customer… but time to move on.

I would not recommend this place after my last visit. I first came here at the beginning of the year to get a tire patched up. Which they did, but the service wasn’t anything special, probably could have gotten the same service anywhere else.
A few months later I had another nail in my tire. I took it to another place 1st and they told me they couldn’t patch it, but I felt like getting a 2nd opinion so I went back to CH tire. When I took it to CH tire they asked me for the wheel lock to my car, which I told them it was in the glove box (and IT WAS b/​c I check after leaving the 1st place and remember seeing it in there). They told me that it’s not in there they said they will contact the dealership to try to find a wheel lock (which I’m sure they would have charge me for it) and said they will contact me the next day as soon as they could get their hand on one.
Two days later and still no call, so I follow up and they said they were working on it. Days later and still no follow-​up. I was fed up at this point and I went to the dealership myself and asked them to replace the wheel lock with regular lug nuts. I went to another place afterwards and I’m still waiting for that call.
Overall, their customer service is horrible (although they make it seem like they are helping you) and I suspect that they stole my wheel lock to up charge me on additional service.

I hate to be the guy who writes a review out of anger but I’m currently sitting on the side of the highway bc of the incompetence of Chapel Hill Tire. This is the second serious mess up of theirs, when all I had them do is an oil change.
Episode 1: forgot to tighten drain plug and/​or oil filter. Resulting in leaking oil all down the street.
Episode 2 (today): didn’t secure the plastic undercarriage guard, which fell down and dragged down the highway. So I am now stuck on the side of the road waiting for them to send someone out (I’m 5min away from the shop and going on 30min waiting).
So, beware of this place.

This place wins the Indy Weekly award for best shop every year, so I decided to give them a shot. I’m not convinced they’re THAT good, but I’ll give them another shot when I need an oil change.
I called on a Monday to make an appointment to have my breaks replaced the following week, and asked for a quote on a couple tires. They took my information, scheduled my appointment and got my car’s information. Mack said he’d call me back with a quote. It took 5 more calls on my part to finally get a quote 3 days later. It was a frustrating experience right there, and not the way to start a relationship. Also, their online appointment link does not work.
When I finally got the quote, the tires were $ 70 more than my other choice, Costco, which offered the same protection service. They’re close to me and convenient, and I wanted to establish a long-​term relationship with an auto repair company for my future needs. Plus, Mack stayed after closing on Wednesday to finally get me to quote he’d promised, so I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and gave them my service.
They were able to have my car finished at the time I needed it. I had no problem with their complimentary shuttle service. We weren’t sure if my rotors would need to be replaced, or if they could turn them — and they didn’t scam me for their benefit and were able to turn them. I’m not happy with the tires. I drive a Lexus ES 350 and my tires squeal when I take turns quickly now. My fiancé tells me this is because they’re lower quality touring tires. I got the tires Mack described as the ones he’d recommend for «the best bang for my buck». Why sell someone with a quality car tires that won’t perform well? I would have been willing to pay more if I had known that these would be like this – but I relied on the information from «the experts», since I don’t know a lot about cars.
All that being said, I’ll give them another shot. If they mess up the oil change or make it inconvenient to schedule in any way, then I’m done.

It’s hard to find quality mechanics in Durham, but this is one of them! A few months ago my radiator went out on me on my way to school (the day of an exam to boot!) and I carefully drove to CHTCCC. Once there they helped me get to class, didn’t do ANYTHING until they’d gotten in touch after the exam, and did excellent work. The place is cute and relaxing (a garden on the roof whaaa?) and are environmentally conscious. The prices are not the lowest, but car maintenance/​repair is, IMHO, not something you want to go cheap on.

I can’t speak from direct experience, as I simply scheduled an oil change for my wife’s car; she was the one who actually took the car in and waited on it.
What I will say is that I received a phone call a week after our service, and they just wanted to make sure everything was going fine with the car.
It put me at ease to know there are still quality auto shops to be found.

No hassle service center in Southern Durham.
Called to make an appointment for a tire rotation, they were really flexible on the available times (though note they don’t have any after hours service). Check in was fast and easy and other then just checking to see if I needed an oil change there was no attempts to upsell (my main complaint with many service departments). Waiting area is small (5 chairs) but has a big tv, coffee, water, Wi-​Fi, good selection of magazines and fresh donuts. When they told me there were donuts in the waiting area I expected to see packaged, stale donuts — so I was really happy to see a full dozen donuts from Dunkin Donuts (right around the corner), very nice touch! I also saw their shuttle service vehicle run back and forth, so that’s another nice perk.
Took about 20 minutes to get my car back to service, and the service was done in under 10 minutes. The cost was exactly what they quoted me when I made the appointment and what they reiterated when I checked in, $ 18.
Overall a great place to get your car serviced, will definitely be back!
