In a neighborhood of storefront bodegas and fast food, you don’t expect to find a supermarket. But it’s there. See the sign that appears to have been from an old movie theatre, the grand opening flags, and the hastily put up Foodtown sign flapping in the breeze? Firstly, unlike the other supermarkets 5 – 15 minutes away like Aldi and Fairway, there is no parking lot. And street parking is at a premium. You’ll be lucky to find pay to park spaces. And don’t even think of not paying. The NYPD traffic cops ruthlessly patrol this part of Boston Road. When you finally walk inside, you are treated to a new, pristine supermarket. And it’s huge! You don’t expect the size from the exterior façade. The employees are nice. The prices are pretty competitive. For example, $ 3.49 for Naked fruit juice is a competitive price, I’ve never seen it priced cheaper at any other supermarket. There is a fully stocked deli counter where you can get sandwiches and the like. It may be a good alternative to fast food dives in the area. It takes 10 – 15 minutes for them to make a deli sandwich for $ 6.99. One problem is they haven’t yet worked out the bugs in their sales. They advertise 320 ounce cokes for 5 dollars, but when they rang it up, they tried to charge me almost 7 dollars. It took them more than 2 minutes to correct it. In closing, it’s a really solid supermarket. It’s not outstanding like Fairway, and I prefer Long Island’s King Kullen to this place, but Foodtown is a welcome addition to this neighborhood.
