East Lansing Marriott at University Place

Great hotel. Lots of remodeling going on but it didn’t seem to get in the way. The staff was amazing. I work in the hospitality industry and EVERYONE was nice, courteous and welcoming. Very refreshing. We will come back.

$ 12.95 per day for WiFi? I’m already paying for a room in your hotel so I’m a customer, and you want to charge for WiFi? Not going to happen. I’m out of here and not coming back.

I made a single night stay here in December 2014. This was a nice property, though nothing genuinely remarkable. Parking is under the hotel in an apparently city-​owned garage; parking fee was $ 9 with unlimited in and out privileges, fairly reasonable as parking goes. The underground parking arrangement would be particularly desirable when there’s snow or ice on the ground.
Check in was easy; I did not get the typical «thanks for your loyalty» type welcome, but it was pleasant enough. I had requested a room upgrade via email about a week and a half before arrival. Nothing was said by the desk agent when I checked in; I was given a room on the concierge floor. The room seemed pretty normal in size and amenities, but was a corner room with a very nice and spacious outside balcony. I didn’t use the balcony area since temperatures were in the upper 20s, but that would be a very nice feature during nice weather.
The on site restaurant was closed for dinner on my Tuesdaynight arrival; there was no notification or signage about this. I ordered room service, ordering the three-​cheese French onion soup and a Ceasar salad, along with a glass of Canyon Road merlot. I was quoted a 45 minute or less delivery time; in reality, it was 20 minutes or less. The French onion soup was absolutely delicious. The salad was fresh and of a good size; the Ceasar dressing tasted a bit off but was still good. Delivery service was very professional and personable.
The concierge lounge was nothing to get excited about; it was OK. Evening snacks were tampanadas, cheese, crackers, and roasted vegetables. It seemed a little light (though the roasted vegetables were great.) Absolutely nothing (apart from chemical popcorn and bags of pretzels) was available until 5:30 PM.
The room was spacious, clean, and functional. There are lots and lots of eating places within easy walking distance due to the property’s proximity to MSU. If you have business at MSU (I didn’t), the location is ideal. Though my business was in Dimondale, SW of Lansing, getting where I needed to go was still easy — there’s no traffic to speak of in this small college town.
Nothing about this stay blew me away, but neither do I have even minor nits to pick. I’ll be back in Lansing multiple times for ongoing business and I’ll very likely continue to stay at this property.

The location is fantastic for watching A Sparty game, either football or basketball. Love the pool on the third floor you can actually go outside and lay out in the lawn chairs during the summer and fall. The bar downstairs is also a class act.

The hotel is conveniently located, and our room was clean and comfortable. But on top of already high rates, they nickel and dime you for everything. $ 12.95 for one day of wi-​fi, and $ 12 for continental breakfast? If smaller properties can provide these services free of charge, why can’t this one?

I don’t know what the staff’s deal is! We just checked in at about 12 am, because we just got off a flight. Very rude. Our key wasn’t working in the elevator & they acted like we were stupid. Then we went to the garage to move our car and on the way back up they were eyeing us down! And I know they they weren’t looking at me because I wasn’t wearing any makeup ! Kind of put a bad taste in my mouth about this hotel. Won’t come back again

The best thing about this hotel is the location. Truly everything is nearby and walking distance so you can drink and eat all you want and still be able to drag your buttocks back to bed. At $ 200 bucks a night, the rooms are mediocre. You overlook the offices across so don’t expect a view of anything other than some poor soul working at a desk. If at least it was a porn movie so you get a show then I would give it a few extra stars. The rooms don’t feature a bar nor a refrigerator so make sure you load up on ice if you want a cold beverage at night. In an era of free wi fi these guys will charge you $ 10 if you want internet in your room, but you can go down to the lobby and get it for free? Seriously? Every bar and restaurant have free wi fi so what’s the deal Marriott? As for other amenities they have indoor pool, breakfast bar, gym and parking. So for the price you may just as well stay elsewhere for less and save your money for more important things like beer and meat!

Outdated and expensive Marriott property — I am a «gold status level» Marriott Rewards member and would rate this place at slightly above the «dump» level (especially for the price $$$). To add insult to injury, the staff insists on collecting money «up front» for underground parking garage. My voucher card did not work and I had to pay again to exit the garage — the «Security Manager» for this property accused me of not properly using their system and therefore liable for 2X the parking payment… the Manager of this Marriott refused to return my telephone calls.

You can’t beat the location for proximity to the campus and walking distance to many popular bars and restaurants. The garage parking is convenient, the breakfast is very good and the staff is friendly. Only negative is that the rooms are dated. If this place had a refresh it would be 5 stars.

The hotel’s a little dated, but has the essentials for a Marriott brand hotel. The hotel is centralized located to restaurants/​bars, easy parking and the staff is nice. It’s on the high price side for the amenities, but centrally located.

Hotel is first– class and the best property in the Lansing area. Rooms are comfortable, garage is covered and on premise and front desk staff is helpful and attentive.
Close to everything in East Lansing and 10 minutes from Lansing and Okemos. Very friendly helpful staff. They are upgrading wi-​fi as that was my only issue with sporadic service.
Oversized King rooms are available and ask if they have any with a balcony. I would highly recommend and repeat on future stays.
I am on the road about 60 nights a year and this is above average.

Super easy check-​in after booking online. Love the proximity to MSU campus and very reasonable rates. Doesn’t deserve $$$$ rating.
I loved the modern décor, especially the dark wood and fixtures in the bathroom. Beds were wonderful: big, warm down comforters, not like those scratchy, nasty blankets in some hotel rooms.
The Bath and Body aromatherapy products were a nice touch.
Very happy with our stay.

I think the 4 $ signs only apply on special occasions. I was here over a summer weekend, booked the same day of arrival, was offered $ 99/​night. That sounds pretty reasonable to me. I ended up using my points, and was pleasantly surprised how nice my room was: corner room with a king size bed on the top floor. It has its own balcony, large size mini frig, and a pull out sofa! I really appreciate the extra spacious space and the fact that Marriott treats its loyal costumers right! The bathroom and carpeting have been updated. The room is clean and comfy. Yes, the furnishing is a bit old otherwise, but that doesn’t bother me as much as the lack of free wifi (I can’t believe there is no free wifi in the lobby!).
Complementary shuttle is a big plus. I flew in too late for the shuttle service, so the front desk paid for my taxi ride. How sweet is that!
The lobby is well lit and airy; very modern. I am impressed that East Landing has this large modern Marriott in East Lansing. The locals seem to agree because there was a wedding when I was there.

Holy cow. $ 700 for five rooms for an overnight stay, they charge you $ 13 per night for a slow wi-​fi connection, you have to pay a fee for parking in their parking garage, and there’s no fridges in the hotel rooms, which is pretty bad if your breakfast consists of a energy drink. My roommates and I made do by filling our bathroom sink with ice.
Anyways, the rooms are really nice and except for the fridge, are adequately furnished and very clean, and along with the closeness of everything in proximity to the hotel, the Marriott deserves its three stars. It would’ve gotten four if the price for an overnight stay was cheaper, but I do understand it’s the proximity to campus that makes a stay here pricey.

I have to say I have a love hate relationship with this Marriott. Great location with plenty of restaurants within walking distance. The staff is always extremely friendly and they take great care of you… Marriott beds!!! But, the rooms are OLD. They still have the old TV’s in the armoire. I can’t remember the last time I stayed at a Marriott that didn’t have flat screens. If you want a Marriott that has been remodeled, try the Courtyard.

2.5 stars really. Creepy staff. Updated but minimal furnishing.

We stayed at this hotel for a graduation weekend & despite having 3 rooms, the staff was very accommodating keeping us together, ensuring we had our bags in the right room, etc.
The rooms were all clean & well-​furnished with large comfy beds. However, the temperature situation was a bit odd (rooms on the interior of the hotel (facing inwards) were very warm, those facing the outside were VERY cold. There must be an insulation problem bc it was 3 degrees in January & we had the a/​c on in the interior room & the heater at the highest temp on in the exterior rooms.
Housekeeping was always flexible.
The central location made it a no-​brainer for this trip. If I ever return to Lansing, I’ll likely stay here.

MSU put me up here, so I can’t talk about the price, but the room was lovely. King size bed, way more pillows than one person needs, comfy couch and chair, decent-​sized desk. Lovely toiletries and a real hairdryer in the bathroom.
I ordered breakfast delivered to my room the first morning, which arrived piping hot and right on time. Really nice service, and it didn’t seem like it was more expensive than dining in their restaurant.
Service at the front desk was excellent. For a few days away I only ever do carry-​on luggage, so it was nice that they had razors and shaving cream available upon request for folks like me who don’t want to get in a fight with the TSA. They also set up my cab ride to the airport with no problem — and as my cabbie told me, they also paid for it!
They lose a star for their lack of free wifi.

You can tell this joint is a little outdated, it looks like a time capsule from the 1980’s — you can tell this place was pretty nice back in the day.
Only gripes —- there’s this weird stench along the hallways and the furniture in the room don’t match with each other. Oh, and wireless internet for $ 12/​day — really, is that necessary? My husband told me they just renovated too — really, are you sure?
However, I do like their gym — pretty decent for a Marriott gym. They have fresh towels and water for guests. TV access on the wall and the treadmills —- they even provide earphones for the treadmills, pretty awesome. I like the fact that it’s locked so not any TOM, DICK, or HARRY can just walk in.
The counter staff is awesome. Very friendly — they totally helped me when I wanted to know where this one restaurant was located.

This is an OK place. Apparently where President Clinton stayed when he was in town. It’s a good hotel, but just like President Clinton, it’s certainly starting to show its age. The lobby seems a little shabby and gloomy. I had a room on the top floor and it was supposedly recently renovated. The bathrooms have been updated with wood accents and marble counter tops, but unfortunately the rooms in general don’t look all that impressive considering it’s just been renovated. It is what you would expect from a Marriott, nothing more, nothing less.
I stayed here at a corporate rate of $ 129 so it seemed very reasonable to me — had no idea that it could go up to $ 400 a night. I certainly wouldn’t pay that much for a stay here, although the location is quite nice for visiting East Lansing. The front desk staff are helpful and courteous.
