Althouse 1848

Great food, awesome music and amazing ownership. We had to wait a while before we were sat but that’s expected at a new restaurant on opening weekend. The hostess did an incredible job at communicating when we’d be sat. She told us 45 minutes, kept checking on us and sat us in under 40 minutes. The service, the food and the people made this a great dining experience. You have made some local fans for life and we will certainly spread the gospel.

So disappointed! #1 No real atmosphere. Yes, the water view is nice, but no real effort
was put into the interior, considering the food is pricey. #2 They give nothing at the table, i.e. bread basket, crackers, etc.
#3 How could a bartender not know how to make Irish Coffee?! The waiter brought it over in a coffee mug, no whipped cream, nothing! #4 The cook could not get our burgers cooked as ordered 2 times. One good thing, the burger meat & bun was good quality. Our waiter also
was very apologetic & cordial to us. Hope they get this place to shape up soon!

This place has a great location and has great service! The food is very good but I feel the brunch menu is a bit limiting. Enjoyed the summer time dinner atmosphere (first time there) and the great brunch prices (second time here) with the bottomless mimosas. However, the time we were there for brunch, when I wanted to substitute the omelet with egg whites– they weren’t able to accommodate and they just offered what was on the brunch menu, verbatim. Very friendly staff and great view while you eat!

Great addition to the East Rockaway area. The food is every thing you want for a local bar. They also had an impressive selection of beers on draft. They few times I’ve been there they had a great local 2 man band playing. Definitely worth checking out.

But a bad spot. But cone with friends. Pretty old crowd seems like that around all these spots. Had a band that wad playing done lame hits.
Didn’t try any food maybe next time. I’m update again.

We ate here last night wanting to see a band play. Our choice of food was a little disappointing… I order the New York strip which I asked to be cook medium and came back raw. So I had it sent back to cook it a little more. It was okay but small and for the price I could have gone to Ruth Chris. My mistake for not ordering a burger which I hear are good. She had the Althouse salad with chicken. The salad was great but the amount of chicken they give you is disappointing. Later we went and sat at the lounge and listen to the band. Besides the food the atmosphere is nice and pretty. Our bartender Andy was friendly and can mix a nice drink. If I go back its burgers and drinks!

I have taken out from this place three times in the last two months. All times the same thing a caesar salad w grilled chicken.
First with the positives nice staff. Good enough dressing.
Negatives is the pricing started at $ 15 the first time $ 16 the second time n today $ 17.33 my third n final time i will be going here for this salad. Bc not really a price issue but a sizing issue. The first time it was still on the small side but the grilled chicken n croutons made up for it. Second time it was smaller amount. N this time it was a hand full worth of romaine lettuce. Six thin strips of chicken cold n barely grilled n four small croutons. It was the size of a small side salad. I am done eating n still hungry. Not worth the price for the size. N i am a small girl. It sucks bc i really was happy the first time i took out from them. N now i will try to find another local place when i am at my bros house to take out caesar salads from.

Also I went one saturday night for drinks w my sister in law n ordered a black n tan pint. The kid behind the bar made it with pbr??? Not becks or killians. N way light on the Guinness. Who makes a blk n tan with pbr??? I didnt finish it. N should have told the kid how it is made n refused that sorry excuse for a blk n tan. It was blk n piss. Even the way he tapped it was wrong.
also the band playing named «hotel» –something like that was the name? playing classic rock a plus. To a mostly 60 n over crowd. But the band made negative gay comments were totally stupid n screamed ignorance. I know there are plenty of rednecks that reside here in east rock so i am not surprised. The haters are going to hate but its not going to bring in the people w money too spend n keep them there. Between the blk n piss n the band… Those b@tches killed our vibe n we left early.
Being stingy n pricey for pub food is a recipe for disaster n failure. N not pulling a proper blk n tan is sorry excuse. No matter how good it may be. Better beer n bang for my buck elsewhere. Darios a highly rated italian restaurant in rc has a caesar salad for two people for the same price. Which is way better all around.

Great food great atmosphere .was there in the winter a bit cold upstairs but had a great time can’t wait to go back.

Went with friends last night. Looks pretty from the outside, not so much on the inside. Just a plain bar and the upstair dining room had a very bare plain feeling. Was with a group of professional women celebrating a birthday dinner so was a let-​down. The food was good overall except for the Ahi Tuna which was way overdone and stuck in our throats. Chef. ahi tuna should ALWAYS be rare unless specifically requested otherwise and my friend did ordered it rare. It was awful but she would not send it back! The swordfish special was good, the salmon was fantastic. I ordered the Althouse salad with grilled shrimp. Was served the arugula salad, no shrimp. 20 minutes later (after I ate some of everyone elses’ dishes), my salad came out– no shrimp. At that pont I was full so had it bagged to go. The waitress was so nice and kind that we overtipped LOL! She was very sweet. Two of us stayed for the excellent band that was playing downstairs… really excellent. I’d go back with my husband to try the burgers that everyone is raving about and especially if that band is there but will not go back with «the girls».

The burger (1848) was terrific with great flavor. The wedge fries were also very good. The beers on tap were nice and cold. My only complaint is that the selection of sandwichs or burgers is a bit limited. The menu has many other entrée-​type items, but it just seems like the sort of place where you would prefer to get something a bit more pub-​ish. It has a great location though and I would assume that the view from the second floor dining area is quite nice. Would very likely be a fun place in the summer with the patio that they have outside… not so great when it is 20 out though.

It’s just a shame this place can’t get their act together because ER needs a good pub! I hope the owners read all the reviews and make some changes — but they wont.
They are trying to cater to the RVC crowd and don’t want the locals.
Place is always freezing.
Inexperienced staff from the top to the bottom and it shows as soon as you walk in.
Owners are just clueless on what hospitality is! The place is ran like the old Pier 101 or the Duck.
Runs out of booze and also pour drinks from 1.75L bottles that are on the floor?
The tap beer is horrible, HORRIBLE! it’s always flat, off temperature and I question if they even clean the lines?
The bottled beer is never cold. YES the mountains are not blue.
I witnessed a patron dig out Fruit flies from her Red Wine, onto a napkin, told the Bartender, got up and left.
The soda guns are so sticky the soda buttons get stuck in the on position?
No pub food or bar menu?
Great Wings — but anyone can make great wings. Cook wings toss in Franks hot sauce with butter and serve. NO ROCKET SCIENCE HERE!
I would be surprised if this place makes it thru the winter, it sucks that this place sucks.

We did the bottomless brunch for just under $ 20 per person.
Jackie was our waitress and she was very sweet. She made sure our glass was never empty and came back to check on us. I ordered french toast which was so good, but very small portion. I don’t eat a lot, but I left feeling like I had an appetizer. My boyfriend had the breakfast burger, which was also good and filling according to him. They have lots of specials here, and seating upstairs which I didn’t check out but I’ll definitely be back!

2^nd time here for dinner and food was great. Usually my go to spot for sun football but not really my friday dinner spot until tonight. Apps were very good. Recommend sweet sour calamari. Salmon for entrée was great. Others at the table had nothing hut b great things to say about the burgwrs too. Drinks were mixed very well and the service was great. Will definitely be back.

What a great find! The atmosphere is great, everyone is very friendly and the server’s are constantly smiling. The view from the dining room upstairs is very beautiful. We actually visited on a very busy night; East Rockaway’s Stars and Stripes festival. Our server Chris was very attentive an upfront about the kitchen running behind. (Honestly we have been to other restaurants with a much longer wait for food and not a mention) Are food came out very timely, hot and fresh! The burgers were delicious. Only wish I could have found out some history of the building. Maybe on the next menu they could add a little something about why it is called Althouse 1848. We will be returning.

I came here with a friend during the Stars and Stripes festival held in E. Rockaway.
We were trying to decide where to have a drink and some appetizers (between Reel and the Althouse), and decided to eat at the Althouse.
Very nice outdoors for dining, inside is a typical sports bar type of dining area. The outdoor area was crowded, so we ended up sitting inside.
All we wanted were two appetizers and drinks. Though our server was very nice, she was new, and totally slammed, according to what she told us about the inordinately slow service we received.
We only got our drinks after waiting for half an hour, and much prompting. The two appetizer items we ordered were baked clams and calamari.
Well, we finally did receive the baked clams (after much waiting), and never did receive the calamari. Silverware and napkins were never put down (only after we asked). Finally we decided to forego waiting for the calamari, and asked for a check.
Never did either of the managers on duty come by to see how we were doing, When we told one of the managers that we decided to cancel the rest of our order, never asked why, or offered apologies, or offered to speed up our order, NOTHING. So much for customer service…
I realize that this place is new, and the area is still recovering from Sandy. There are bound to be some glitches. However, it seems untenable to have to wait so long just to receive two appetizers. Good thing we weren’t starving!
Anyway, this will not be a place that I would recommend, unless Althouse gets their act together fairly quickly.

Came here with some friends after going to the reel around the corner. Great vibe and the bartender was very nice. The whole staff seems very happy and outgoing. The food was very good for bar food. The have outdoor seating which is right on the water. Doesn’t get much better than this!

One of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Great location right on the water, great cold beer on tap, friendly service, all around great local place. Been multiple times this summer and can’t wait to go back soon

The best burger I have ever had, hands down. Three types of meet combined with fried onions and a thick slice of cheese. I really loved the food and this joint. If you are not in the area this place is worth the trip. Great Location, right on the water, great bar and good service. I don’t know what else to say. Other then I was suprised by this cool bar with really great food. I’ll be back.

We were in search of some buffalo wings (harder to find in East Rockaway than you might expect) and happened across Althouse 1848. Absolutely awesome. Amazing food, friendly staff and ridiculously great cocktails. On top of that, you get to enjoy all of this deliciousness with a great view and a cool breeze when they roll up the garage doors. You’ll do well to have Pete as your bartender…
