Being a Brooklyn born and raised chick I am programmed to be a no nonsense, get what you pay for, know what you want type of shopper. I pick my service destinations not by convenience but by value, talent and treatment. When it comes to my hair this is where I go and why. The shop atmosphere is small but cozy and not cramped. The front desk/manager is courteous and very efficient even under stress when the shop is crowded. She books all appts and calls you a few says prior to remind you, as well as working her magic squeezing you in for hair emergencies. Inessa does great color, gives an excellent cut, takes her time and is a true perfectionist. Oh. the shampoo lady gives an amazing head massage too!

If I could give a zero, especially after the experience I had this evening I would! I have been coming here for years only because of Inessa who gives an excellent cut and does great color. At one point I stopped coming here because I could not stand how fake and greedy the owner Sandy was and how rude Sue is(their manager, that basically takes appointments and your money). I returned because I guess I forgot how horrible this place was because I knew Inessa was great. Continued to come here for several years dealing with their rudeness and fakeness. Today, I truly regret ever returning and giving them my business over the years. I should have left when all of my family and friends stopped coming here. From a loyalty standpoint, they do not value your business at all. Sue is a rude, grumpy, and a mean nasty old women that can’t even do her job(making appointments). Today, I was driving to a 6pm appt with Inessa after work only to get a nasty call in a decrepit oversmoked voice stating that my appt was at 5. When my response was no my appt is at 6,(#1 There is no way I would ever make a 5 o’clock appt– it’s simply not feasible with my career, #2 I have a calendar that outlines by every day because my days are very busy), Sue’s response was«Well maybe if you listened to your messages.» I am sorry but when I make an appt at 6 and put it on my calendar, I don’t need a curtesy reminder — I am a responsible adult. So instead of apologizing for the confusion, owning up to her mistake, or trying to find a resolution she tells me — again in her decrepit oversmoked voice — «well Inessa has to leave!» She may have as well said something like…“Well that’s not my problem!” I could not believe the audacity of this woman! Her response to the issue pretty much summarized how much they valued the business I was giving them! Not only can Sue not do her job but she has absolutely no integrity. She completely lied!!! Anyways, to summarize — if you want to be treated like crap — go here! They are fully trained professionals in treating people like garbage!

Many years ago my brother referred my Mom to Sandy. At that time she was working for someone else. My Mom and several other family members and friends liked what both my brother and my Mom had to say and gave Sandy a try. Fast forward 20+ years. Sandy has opened 2 shops. Both beautiful spaces. Her current shop is so warm and welcoming. Sandy and now Inessa who has been my stylist for a number of years are very gracious people. They are great at styling and coloring hair. Highly recommend Solo Hair Design.

The only reason I give this place 5 stars is because of my one and only hair stylist, Charo!!! She is the best, she’s been taking care of me since I was 11 years old(I’m 31 now) and I will never ever ever let someone else touch my hair(unless is for a blow dry). I live in NYC and I travel all the way in public transportation just to see her. I don’t care about the salon she works at, I just follow her!!! She’s always up to date, stylish and super nice! I always let her do whatever she wants in my hair but I will NEVER trust someone else!

Walked out feeling extremely taken advantage of. Here is my experience… scheduled a last minute haircut. I was taken right away. Had a consultation with sandy before my hair was washed which I appreciated. The shampoo was less then average. Experienced some poking massage movements that I never felt before. I was satisfied with the cut however the blowout did not meet my expectations. I asked for flips and felt that this could have been executed better. My stylist left during my service on several occasions to greet people walking in, schedule appointments, answer phones and ring customers out. What compels me to rate this salon 2 stars was when I checked out. The stylist handed the women who previously shampooed me a ticket and said goodbye. That was when the lady said $ 85! I was so shocked I couldn’t even speak. I totally understand that the menu pricing said $ 50 and up. However $ 35 is a major jump in pricing(not including the tip I left) and I felt that this should have been communicated during my consultation. I felt like I just got robbed. This is extremely upsetting that a business would exercise behavior that would make a client feel this way. I won’t be coming back.

I had my hair cut by the owner, Sandy. She told me that if I referred my friend to her, she would give me a discount on my next hair cut. I did refer my friend, and my friend duly mentioned to them that she was referred by me. When I went back for my next hair cut, Sandy did not honor the referral and she charged me full price. Moreover, for the hair cut, I explained to her that I wanted the same hair cut that she did the last time. She acknowledged that she remembered how to do it and agreed to cut it the same. As she was cutting, I noticed that she was doing a different cut. At the end, the hair cut was completely different. I asked her what happened and she said that she had just returned from training class and wanted to experiment on my head with the new hair cut that she learned. I was really upset because that was not what we discussed and she had no right to experiment on my head. The cut looked horrible. In a lame effort to justify her actions, she explained that she is friends with one of my ex-co-workers and said that she didn’t like me. What a unprofessional bitch! Needless to say, I would never go back.

For the last 20 years, I have never allowed anyone other than Sandy Yip cut my hair. She is is the owner of the place and is an absolute doll! She is always keeping up with the current trends and styles and I’m always getting compliments on my do. For those Asians out there who are always wary of hairdressers who end up giving you a flat cut that replicates the ring… fear no longer.
