History

Established in 1944.

Oliver’s began 70 years ago on a two lane dirt road

know as San Pablo Dam Road. It was a Standard Oil gas station with a small store in the back selling paint and miscellaneous hardware items. Over the years we have grown and expanded the business’s. Now, located on the same corner of San Pablo Dam Road and Appian Way is Oliver’s «Ace» Hardware, T & D Auto Repair, El Sobrante Valero Gas Station and Speed Way Full Service Carwash. Oliver’s «Ace» Hardware has 8,000 sq. ft. of retail space upstairs and another 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space downstairs.

Slightly overpriced but considering the lack of hardware stores around, this will do. Staff is always willing to help and knowledgeable.
Bought a tool that didn’t work but honored the return. 3* because Deb wanted to make sure the item was indeed purchased from their store, which also implies the customer was lying.
In the world of customer service, the customer is ALWAYS right no matter how wrong they are, however, abusers should be banned. After implying that I didn’t appreciate her actions implying that I was a liar, Deb became rude.
Would I go back? Only if I was desperate.

I was born and raised in El Sobrante and have always gone to Olivers to get anything we may need. Boy have things changed. I went into the store to day and the cashier was so snotty and acted like she had better things to do than to help me and the middle aged man just ignored me until I kept on him to help. There was oneolder gentleman that did help and I do appreciate him. I told my dad and he says that on the weekends they do have a different kind of customer service that during the week. I am going to make sure I have everything I need so I dont ever have to go back in.

Even though it isn’t very large, Oliver’s Hardware reminds me so much of the hardware store I went to with my father so many years ago, I want to think of reasons to stop here. I read that the store has been in the Oliver family since 1943. The store is bigger than it appears from the outside. They carry everything I need when I go a hardware store. The people working here are helpful and friendly. I’m sure if I had a question they could answer it for me.
So, how do I rate a hardware store? Well for me it is 5-​stars all the way: Old fashion charm that satisfies my memories of childhood hardware stores, and that also meets my current needs for nails and light bulbs

Wish could give option of «No Stars.» Ordered a product online on 6/​4, with web showing «item in stock.» Received email 2 days later that order was processed and shipped. We says items normally ship within 1 – 2 business days, so it was right on par. I wrote an email on 6⁄10 asking for a tracking order or a estimate delivery date. Quickly received an email of «Order canceled. Not in stock.» Were they just hoping I forgot I ordered something? Were they never going to update this order unless I wrote an email? I wrote another email asking questions, but all’s I get back is a Computer Generated response that the Order was cancelled.
People on the East Coast don’t do business like this. Shady.

No one EVER seems to know where anything is. And while seeming to have plenty of inventory, most of it is impossible to see. Nails for a nail gun? They didn’t know. But we found them in 30 seconds. The employee seemed surprised.
Today I called to ask about a drywall product. The second person who answered the phone fully admitted to not knowing much about drywall… And I guess they don’t carry Fast Set 20.
I would love to support this store because it’s the closest to us, and seems like a super neighborhood friendly place, but this is easily the 4th disappointing experience. I guess good help is hard to find.

I always have fun going into Oliver’s. It has that old time feel and the people working there are always helpful. I’ve needed keys made and bought my first set of screw drivers here. There’s lots of free parking.
This is the kind of place that has a little bit of everything. Maybe a lot. But I’ve found that if I’ve had a need around the house, I can find the solution here.

Extremely polite and helpful… AND they speak English (the kind you can readily understand)!
I usually have only a vague idea of what I want/​need or think I want/​need when entering a hardware store. The gentleman who helped me kindly explained the various types of paint — what I would need to refinish gold leaf tables and what works best for a doll house. Nothing pushy, just great assistance… definitely will be going back here rather than wasting my time elsewhere and risking a language barrier…

The kind of place where you can find LED bulbs or that laundry sprinkler thingie you put in the top of a Coke bottle (I’ve also used them to make camping «shower» set ups before you could buy them ready made.) So up to date. So very old school. I always find everything I came for and the service is exemplary. I must add, it was love at first sight. Was at my mechanic (right next door) waiting and looking around. Out front, Oliver’s had my favorite rectangular portable Weber BBQ. I knew we’d get along.

Every time I’ve come here I’ve been treated so nicely and the staff is very helpful. I’m not any kind of expert on tools etc etc so I always need lots of help and from what I’ve seen they know what they’re doing and try to help the best they can.
One time I went in there needing a certain screw to fix an appliance and they tried different screws for like 15 minutes trying to get the right one (it was a part that had been specially made for the appliance so it was not standard). The part cost less than a dollar but they helped me just the same as if I’d been buying something expensive.
I’m glad to have this place near my house.

I try to support local businesses instead of the chains, but sometimes it’s hard to do. Oliver’s carries a varied inventory — great for running down the block for whatever we need to fix whatever is broken. But I’d say 3 out of 5 times I’ve gone there and asked for help, I’ve gotten bad information. They are the closest, and a small local business, so we support them as much as we can, but their prices are higher, and their opinionated staff are wrong as often as they are right.
