Herb’s Bakery

Back in September My Husband and I got married. We had a Super Hero themed wedding with lots of bright colors. Herb’s was so helpful in the process of taste testing and design. Last minute we couldn’t find the Superman cake topper we wanted, so they made one out of chocolate for us. It was my dream cake. Thanks Herb’s! You all rock!

If you want a cake that looks like a toddler decorated it, and rude customer service when you try to inform them of your dissatisfaction with your order, then this is the bakery for you!
I ordered a cake for my baby shower from here and was initially told they couldn’t do the cake I wanted with fondant because they need two weeks notice for anything with fondant. They said they could do something very similar to the pictures I showed them so I went with it.
The day of pick up someone else had to get it for me as I was caring for a family member in the hospital, and when I got home and saw the cake I almost cried. The cake that we emailed about and I had given them pictures of was NOT what we got. Instead, I had a cake with less than half the decorations that I requested and paid for, a crappy screenshot image that jewel would have done better, uneven frosting, and chunks missing out of the poorly decorated frosting of the cake. They were closed for the remainder of the weekend and I had the shower the next day, so I had to take it somewhere else to be fixed.
When I called to let them know how disappointed I was in the product I received, the woman was rude to me because I accidentally gave her the wrong order date and she said she couldn’t believe someone else would fix their cake. She then said she’d talk to her baker and decorater and call me back. It’s been over a month and I never heard back from them.
I had a neighbor who also ordered around the same time and said they had a terrible experience as well, and that it looked like a toddler did their cupcakes as well.
Needless to say, they won’t be getting my business again!

I got a birthday cake here for my guy for his birthday. A three layer chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and buttercream frosting.
And after ordering it a week prior to the event and pre-​paying for it, the morning of (2 hours before I’m supposed to pick it up) they called to ask, is it 2 or 3 layers? And then when I said, 3 layers and its paid for… They tell me the girl didn’t charge me for an additional layer of mousse and there would be an additional charge when I get into the shop.
And it was… Eh. Just ok. Not bad. But nothing to really rave about.
The frosting was very greasy/​lard-​y and had a long lasting and unpleasant after taste. The cake was moist but the chocolate seemed like more of a chalky chocolate. It just didn’t seem right. The mousse filling was good though. It helped to cut the frosting.
I would be willing to maybe try some of their other items (they had some amazing looking items in the cases in the shop) but this one just wasn’t thrilling. I would not order a cake here again. It just wasn’t mine or our taste. Some people might like it though… Depends on your tastes really.

We were very excited based on reviews here, but the service was fair and the cake we bought was mediocre.
The selection of cakes is smaller than we anticipated, but there are still plenty to choose from.
We bought a chocolate cake with buttermilk chocolate icing and chocolate fudge filling. The icing was way to sweet and it was inconsistent.
The staff was not as assertive as they could have been, and a waiting line was unclear or nonexistent. We had to ask a few times before we got someone’s attention.

Herbs Bakery has always been one of my favorite places! Growing up we loved going in and getting a box of their pretzel balls! Also they have amazing cookies (love the thumbprints) cakes and donuts! Through my purchasing and ordering experiences with them, they have always had great customer service and were easy to work with.

Wow! Amazing chocolate torte! The cookies are fabulous as well as the coffee cake. Go here! You will love it!

I ordered cupcakes for my son’s birthday a couple weeks back and provided them with a photo of what I wanted. The cupcakes were based on Baymax from Disney’s Big Hero 6. They came out pretty good, with the exception of the eyes. I’m not sure why, but they added white dots to the center of the eyes, which was not included in the photo. I would have preferred it as pictured, as the addition of the white dots made the eyes look like those plastic googly eyes –off center and shaky.
That being said, everyone thought the cupcakes were cute, and as always, they were delicious! We did chocolate and lemon flavored. I’ve attached a photo.

We have bought several cakes from herbs. they are always consistently great. Great variety of fillings, cakes and frosting. The employees are great and always go above and beyond to make sure your satisfied.

Not much to say other than this bakery is one of the best you’ll find in Chicago-​land. Absolutely unbelievable soft light fluffy texture, creative variety and amazing taste. Whenever Ive brought their donuts to meetings, they’re gone in minutes and I’m an instant hero. I hope this bakery continues for many more years.

Loved the Boston cream pie I ordered for my husband’s birthday! Would recommend this bakery for SURE!

Called for a poker theme cake less than a week and they came through! Not knowing what it would look like I was very pleased! It was moist and tastes great too. They were nice on the phone and it person. Grabbed a fresh loaf of buttercrust bread for a buck and that was great also. I would def go back.

Our wedding venue has Herbs do their wedding cakes, so we really had to have faith that Herbs was going to be great. We gave them a picture of how we wanted the cake to look, and they were able to duplicate it exactly. We went with chocolate with chocolate cream in the middle, hey it’s our wedding, we do what we want! It tasted amazing! I have been to 15 weddings in the past 4 years and this was the best wedding cake I have tasted. People at the wedding were also saying how awesome it was! So if your wedding venue has a contract with Herbs you won’t be disappointed. If you are looking for a bakery to make your cake, I do not hesitate to recommend this place!

Ordered a cake for my moms graduation and it came out wonderful! They even created a custom luau themed design on the cake and it was beautiful. The staff was very helpful and very friendly. You must try one of their frosted sugar cookies!

Herb’s did a great job for my godson’s Avengers themed bday cake and cupcakes! I was flying in from out of town for the party weekend and was a bit nervous about ordering a specialty cake from across the country. After finding them online, I decided to call and I’m so glad I did!
I had several calls with them about what I wanted and hat they could do — Wendy and Yvonne (or was it Deevonne?) were responsive, patient, and extremely helpful. The cake was perfect for him and his little munchkin friends and all the parents were quite impressed as well.
Design was just what we wanted and the cake was delicious! Vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting (kept it simple for the kids) and choc cake with fudge filling and vanilla cake with custard. I ordered a two tier cake (serves 20) and 25 cupcakes. We had plenty of cake left and when the vanilla custard tier was eaten a few days after the party, it was still moist and delicious! I had already left by then, but got a couple if great photos of a great cake-​face-​mess!
Thank you Herb’s for coming through! :) on a side note, the display cases at the store when I picked up the cake looked amazing. Next time I visit the area, I will need to go and try other things!

Herb’s Bakery has been bookmarked for a bit too long. I was driving down Route 20 toward my Mom’s house on a Saturday morning when I remembered this bookmark. Herb’s was just a few short minutes off of Route 20 and so I stopped. Parking in their side parking lot was easy. Making my mouth-​watering decisions bordered on downright difficult.
I truly received top notch service at this bakery. The associate helping me was so helpful and patient! It was banana crème pie day, so I left with a mini pie and a few more treats than I planned on. Treats included cookies, a chocolate éclair, a cupcake, a danish and an apple fritter. There were four of us, so everything was split up for tasting and opinions. The cupcake had a great fudgy frosting, but was a tad overbaked. The éclair was lovely. The Danish and the fritter were both worth stopping for again and we loved the mini pie. The cookies were not memorable. I quickly learned that this was the local Saturday morning hot spot. And everyone who walked in knew the staff and they knew the clientele. It was a nice warm, fuzzy feeling sort of place. Plus, I snagged a pretzel roll that was delicious and warmed up my tummy for the rest of my drive out to my Mom’s house.

I’ve been looking for a good cruller for ages. The last cruller I had was years ago in high school, and that one had been from Dunkin Donuts lol. So I was excited when I came across one of my Unilocal friend’s reviews mentioning crullers (HI KEITH! haha). I called them and asked if they had any in stock, and the friendly young woman replied with the affirmative, that they had two varieties. Being a chocolate lover, I made the easy choice of going with the chocolate-​frosted cruller. Upon my first bite, it was everything that I expected in a good cruller– a soft, plush texture accented by the melting sweetness of the chocolate frosting. It wasn’t overly sweet at all, and there was a balance to the donut. Very fresh too. The inside texture reminded me of an English popover, a bit eggy and light.
Out of the many bakeries that I’ve been to in the US and Asia, I’ve never seen an almond pretzel like how Herb’s Bakery does theirs, so I had to try that. And I’m so glad I did because it performed better than my expectations. I was expecting a flaky pastry stick sort, but this pretzel pastry had a strand of almond cookie dough that lent a slight chew to each bite. It was sprinkled heftily with sliced almonds. Delicious!

This was pretty good but a long haul for a donut. Okay so I got up and decided to go out on a food adventure. I followed the Unilocal reviews for bakeries and I was on a mission to get a chocolate croissant. The first place I went to was St Rogers Abbey. Reviews sound like this might be the place to try. Yeah that is until I pulled up and they were out of business. Sad but not really surprised.
So from there I decide to go to Elgin to try Herbs. I pulled in and have to admit I was underwhelmed by the pastry case. Usually the sign of a fabulous bakery is an outstanding looking display of yummy pastries. Not here! Then to top it off now croissants. Thats a bad sign at a bakery. At this point I’m just hungry so I decided to settle on a donut and almond pretzel. The pretzel was really good. Crisp outside yet a chewy finish made it really tasty. The donut, well it was a donut. Nothing was bad but nothing was great it was all just pretty good.

Over a year ago, when I lived in Elgin and hadn’t yet selected the cake for my wedding, I purchased a LivingSocial deal for this bakery. I thought I’d use it to sample some wedding cake or something. But then I moved, forgot about it, and got married. Fast-​forward to July 2012. The deal expires July 9^th and I want some cake! So, I called the bakery early in the afternoon on the day the deal expired. I was asked if I could be placed on hold. Assuming it was for a couple minutes, I said sure. It was actually thirty minutes. Thirty long minutes. I guess it’s a pretty busy bakery, which is a good thing, right?
After thirty minutes, I hung up and tried again. This time, someone asked how they could help me. Confused, I explained that I was just on hold for thirty minutes and now when I call again, someone happens to be available? The guy immediately apologized and said he forgot that I was on hold. Wow. That’s one way to lose customers.
Anyway, I placed my order as best as I could — I had no idea what the place offered, the prices, or anything. Calling blindly isn’t something I usually do (and note to self: don’t do it again), and I wish he had been a bit more helpful. After being on the phone with them so long, I just wanted to order the cake and get it over with. I ended up ordering a pound of assorted cookies and a plan chocolate cake/​vanilla frosting with «whatever border you want to put on it.» The order would be ready on Wednesday afternoon.
Wednesday morning rolled around. I called and asked if I could pick it up sooner than expected — fortunately, I could. Yay! When I went to pick it up, I kind of expected a small bakery filled with delicious goods. Instead, I found a large building with half-​empty shelves (where was all the baked goods?!). The two employees were friendly, and my order was ready, but I left kind of disappointed that I drove all the way out there for something I wasn’t excited about anymore.
The cake was good — just a regular cake. Not worth writing home about. The cookies were pretty phenomenal, though. I ate most of the box. Oops.
I’m giving it three stars because of the annoyance over the phone, the small amount of baked goods available in the shop (if the shop were smaller, then the empty shelves wouldn’t be as noticeable), and the fact that it was just like any other bakery of its type.

Looked through the reviews and noticed one measly mention of pretzel rolls, but not one iota of a peep about their finest product?!? a little background, cue the violin…
I used to work at St. Joes, which is about a mile down the street and given my frequent proximity to this place, I never made it to the bakery before work because, well, I was always hurrying to get to work on time. Thank G for 7 minute grace. Well anyway, one day a sales rep brought a couple boxes of goodies from Herb’s to us, to munch on as he gave his presentation on why his companies products are better, cheaper, etc. We never listen to sales reps that bring food. If you want people to honestly listen to your pitch, you should probably bring two day old pizza, or gruel, either gray or brown colored.
First box opened was all doughnuts, all kinds, raised, cake, glazed, sprinkled, crullers. Of course I ate the cruller. It’s only my favorite doughnut. Second box opened contained the strange rolls that resembled a stretched pretzel that had a strange crust on top of it. And these pretzel sticks might have been pretty plain jane had it not been for that strange crust. Well wouldn’t you know it, that strange crust is cheese. Cheese that must have at one time been kind of melty and gooey, but in present form had been baked to a crisp. And it is this sublime addition that elevates their pretzel into an otherworldly celestial treat.
It’s been 4 and a half years since I had my first pretzel cheese stick, and I haven’t seen anything like it ever since.
