Sunset Playhouse is a community theater and professional performance venue in the heart of Elm Grove, Wisconsin. We present eight major productions per year, including both plays and musicals. We also present our Musical MainStage Concert Series and our SideNotes Cabaret which show case some of Milwaukee’s busiest professional singers. We are also home to the Sunset School for the Arts and produce bug in a rug Children’s Theatre Series which tours the Milwaukee area.

History

Established in 1960.

The Sunset playhouse began with a production of The Turn of the Screw, The Playhouse has been blessed with the contribution of 1,402,050 hours of dedicated service from 36,850 extraordinary volunteers.

Sunset Playhouse is a not-​for-​profit community theatre organization, incorporated in 1954. A building fund drive was launched, enlisting the support of the entire metropolitan Milwaukee area, and in March of 1960, the doors of The Playhouse were opened to the public.

Sunset was the first theater in the state of Wisconsin to be built entirely by a community theater group.

We enjoyed The Addams Family at the Sunset Playhouses very much! The ticket office personnel were friendly and helpful. The musical was well performed. The playhouse is a very nice setting.

Love the Sunset, intimate but not so small that it feels like someone’s basement. Saw The Nerd last week, touted as «One of the funniest plays ever written, this extraordinarily inventive, side-​splitting comedy…» was not. The actors did a great job with what they had, but my side was not split and this was definitely not one of the funniest plays ever written.
In my opinion it would have worked better as a half hour TV style sitcom. Maybe a one-​act play. Truth be told it was just too dang long. I believe some of the bad reviews would not be so bad if the play was just shortened… like half, or better yet, one quarter. It still may not have split my side but at least have tickled it.

This was the first time we went to the Sunset Playhouse in years and will be our last. In a nutshell the seats were so uncomfortable with little if any leg room. I developed leg cramps and the unknown couple next to us left after the first act. The play, The Nerds, was not funny and the acting was very poor. The Sunset Playhouse certainly did not have customer comfort in mind when they remodeled. We’ll continue to support the Fireside Theater which has great shows and great acting.

Always great plays. We have season tickets and greatly enjoy coming. Highly recommended. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They always accommodate is if something comes up and we have to change our designated time. Always to there best.

What a wonderful community based theatre and a reasonable value! I have been to 3 productions there and have been overjoyed with the level of acting and the stories told. To think that every person you see (and don’t!) from the ticket counter to the stagehands are there as volunteers and for the love of the stage is quite humbling. There is not a bad seat to be had and as another reviewer said you can bring wine and beer purchased in the lobby into the show for your enjoyment. I bought a tickets for 2 shows for Christmas presents for my mom and we are both looking forward to our next performance.

Very nice little theater, I would not hesitate to return again.
Doesn’t appear that there would be a bad seat in the house.
The acting was good, especially the main characters.

We recently took Gramma to see «Lumberjacks in Love» on a Sunday afternoon. Although the play was «so-​so», Gramma loved it.
This review gives it 4 stars if your looking to get your older mom, dad, or Grandparents out of the house for a nice safe, pleasant afternoon or evening! They seem to have a nice selection of plays/​musicals and besides, they sell wine and beer so sit back and enjoy a little community theater.
When we were there on a Sunday afternoon, there were no children and we were the youngest in the audience but our goal in getting the tickets was to find a Christmas present to get Gramma out of the house and based on that it was a success.
