Some months ago I stopped in hoping to place a simple print job. It was my first and last visit.
My immediate observation: The shop is shockingly filthy, and a disorganized mess. Heaps of cluttered junk mail and trash littered the chest-​high customer service counter. Impossible not to notice. I rationalized that a busy auto repair shop wouldn’t be pristine either. So, I let that go.
The owner, Allan Ahmed, was alone in his small shop, sitting at a desk several feet from the service counter. He noticed me, but was focused on a tense phone call, apparently an unhappy customer. He was communicating in an agitated manner. Not the sort of tone one normally uses in front of other customers. But, issues arise. So I let that go, too. I stood patiently at the counter, waiting for my opportunity to speak to him.
His call continued for a while, and then I started having second thoughts… thinking, I should probably slip out the door he gets off the phone. But, before I could get away, his call ends, and he turns to address me.
I briefly described what I needed. Nothing complicated. Within the first minute it became evident to Ahmed that I was not bringing in a big job, and his attitude took an unmistakable shift. He was not going to expend any more time on me. Without putting pen to paper, he blurted out an insanely expensive quote, right off-​the-​top-​of-​his-​head, just to end my inquiry. This was his way of dismissing me. Then, he turned around and headed back to his desk. He left me standing, dumbfounded, at his counter.
Obviously, I took my business elsewhere. I found a great independent, full service Sign stop on North Broadway in White Plains. By comparison, that family run company has a tidy showroom that includes lots of displays and examples of their various services. The owners gave me superb customer service, and they did a phenomenal job on my printing. As for costs, the company on North Broadway charged precisely HALF of what Ahmed quoted me.
