Extra Space Storage

Great experience! I was helped by Claudia and she was super ready to help me. Very nice and spunky young lady that got me and my wife a unit on the 3^rd floor. Just what i needed, although i thought that the 3^rd floor might be to much work to move my stuff in, it actually was seemless. Elevators are huge. The place was also really clean. Would recommend to anyone that is planning on storing. Not the cheapest, but have to consider the area and what this facility offers.

When I first went the price was great $ 96.00 a month. After eight months they went up to $ 108.00. Unbelievable up $ 12.00 for a small place. I should of been told they would be going up with their price when I first got the space. I’m on a budget. I love the area because its close to my house and its clean. They will go up again in 8 months. I was told. RIDICULOUS. I WILL BE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER SPACE SOMEWHERE ELSE. SOON.

Came during business hours to find an office that was completely locked and empty. Waited for over 20 minutes and also tried calling several times and still no one showed up. Clearly no concern for customer service. Won’t be back.

The worst bait and switch business model I have ever seen. They try to sell 10×20s that are actually two 10×10 and they call them multi-​door. Yeah right… i got a resevation for a 10×20 I didn’t call and ask for two 10×10s. They tried to sell me a 10×15 for more money. The carts dont work. They have no lighting. They suck.

I first went to Public Storage on Shellmound and 65^th… BIG mistake. The property manager there is a complete ass, and it takes a lot for me to say that about someone. I quickly cancelled my reservation there and went to the next closest place: Extra Space in Emeryville. The difference was night and day. Lesea was very sweet, the place is IMMACULATE, and they supply all the moving accessories you could need. I was skeptical about having a fourth floor unit, thinking it would make my move that much more cumbersome, but their facility is amazing: big, convenient elevators, large doors, and free dollies/​carts. I only had bedroom furniture to move, but the entire process of signing a lease and completely unloading my car — all the way up until I locked my unit’s door and drove away — took less than ninety minutes. I will definitely come here again.

The facility is quite reasonable, perhaps a bit on the pricey side, but you do have a knowledgeable staff that’s accountable. The facility is new and clean and well designed. I attribute my low rating to the move-​out experience. I moved out on July 2. I spoke with the manager who informed me that that I still had 2 weeks left to my month. I explained that I would not need those 2 weeks and she could credit the time back to my card. She informed me that the company did not issue refunds. Huh? I thought this a strange and arbitrary policy. After all, this isn’t a commercial or residential real estate agreement, where the landlord would require time to vett and secure a new tenant. This is a storage locker. They can rent it tomorrow if they receive an inquiry. I responded that this policy was arbitrary and punitive. She shrugged at me. Annoying end to an otherwise reasonable service.

Solid storage facility all around. Easy online account management system. Friendly people who are there to help. I had no issues. Clean and easy to access.

Clean and easy in and out, but really expensive.
Also, be SURE you let them know well in advance when you are leaving. We didn’t and were required to pay for an entire month we didn’t use. I would understand a week or even two, but a month of storage fees when you are putting down a deposit and first and last and you KNOW they can and will rent your unit asap… just kind of awful.

Caveat Emptor!
Do your research! The price seems a little high when you start but you might be willing to go for it because it ‘s a new and clean space. Well, that slightly higher price will grow and keep growing and you won’t get a pro-​rated rent if you move mid– month either (that way the company can get twice the rent for the same space). We used this facility in between buying and selling our house. Had I done a little more shopping around, I could have saved at least $ 300 over 6 months without sacraficing quality.
It ‘s a shame to have to give only 2 stars because this could be a really great place if the company cared a little more about offering reasonable prices to their customers and not ripping them off. There are lots of storage places in the area. See if you can find a less expensive place and negotiate a fixed rate if you are planning to rent for more than a few months and want to save hundreds of dollars.

This is a clean, secure and well maintained facility. Some of the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and competent, and there is one who is none of those things. Let’s just say i’ve had a number of bad experiences with this particular person who has a lot of attitude. If you’re planning on being there longer than 6 months, Aunt Esther says BEWARE children! It’s kind of a scam situation, and they raise the rates approx. $ 10 every 6 months.

We stored our stuff here after a cross country move. Booking the unit from 3,000 miles away was easy. Every person I dealt with on the phone was super friendly and helpful.
The facility is very clean and feels very safe inside despite the neighborhood. Move-​in and move-​out was fairly easy since the parking area is large.
Minus one star because the rates are high and my rate was set to increase this month. Not the best bargain in town, but the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the facility made it worth it to us. I don’t think we got the first month free offer since we didn’t buy their insurance.

The facility is nice, but quite expensive comparatively to other storage places in the area. Also, they asked for a «fully refundable deposit», which after 3 – 4 phone calls to try to actually have it refunded, turned into no refund at all. Deceptive business practices, I say!

WARNING!!! If offered a free months rent make sure it is clearly stated in your contract, I made the mistake of trusting these people only to find that I have encountered a classic bait and switch situation I.e. refusal to honor the offer.
My experience with the local rental office staff as well as the area rep was met with indifference and a refusal to consider the fact they had made the offer. Pretty cold people.
GET IT IN WRITING.

Yes, the advertised prices are not the prices you pay after fees and all that whatnot, but I was still so satisfied with my last experience storing here that I will be using the same facility again in the near future.
The staff was extremely helpful and friendly.
The facilities themselves are clean and easy to use.
Plus last time I stored there they were constantly pumping KISSFM over the stereo. I like to think that all of my stuff had been instilled with funky mojo by the time I picked it up!

The Extra Space on Hollis is perfect for anyone needing short and long-​term storage in the Emeryville and West Oakland area. The staff is friendly and helpful. The facilities are extremely clean and secure, which was even complemented by our moving crew. Will use Extra Space for any storage needs in the future.

As far as the facility goes it’s pretty good, they are clean and have good hours. I would just tell you that it’s not a very good deal for the price. To get the first month free you need to get the insurance they sell. When you try and get this waved after the first month with your own renters or home owners insurance they take it off for one month and then add it back on the next month. When I went to move out they told me I had till the 4^th but when I moved out they hit me for another 5 buck because it was actually the 3^rd. This is in addition to the 10% price increase that others have mentioned in past reviews.
Overall it’s an ok place just be prepared to pay for it.

Pros: the place is clean and seemingly safe and you have access to yer shite 24 hours a day. The people who work there are nice.
Cons: the business model is scam-​ish. Your initial price will go up by 10 percent after 5 months, which they don’t mention when you sign up. It will go up in another 6 months by another 10 percent. So within the first year you will pay another 20 percent. Nice little business model. This type of thing makes me rage, but they have the corner on the 24 hour access market so until that changes. I stay.

Not sure what I think about the fingerprinting, to be honest. That is a bit weird for me, and it’s my own fault for not recognizing the possible security issue there so I’m knocking off one star (too bad I can’t do that for my own common sense, huh?).
Anyway, apart from that, I thus far like this place, and it’s primarily due to the kick-​butt customer service.
Some background:
Me: Humongous, unexpected, messy like a mud pie break-​up necessitates I flee my living space and take things out gradually while I’m alone.
Them: Lovely building with lots of storages spaces within close proximity of my apartment.
It was probably a match made more in heaven than anything else I could’ve asked for at that point in my life.
I called their customer service line first, just to get some info. Frank was helpful and pleasant. By putting $ 10 on my credit card down, I was able to reserve a basic 5×5 that I could visit in person, which is exactly what I did a few hours later.
Jewel was the manager I worked with, and she was quite nice, explaining the required insurance, as well as ensuring me that if I didn’t like the unit she was showing me, she’d show me others until I found a good fit. I wasn’t feeling particularly picky, so I took the first one I saw. She walked me through all of the procedures to get into the building, sold me a lock and some masking tape, and I was on my way.
I wish the storage place was open later than 10pm, but I suppose that’s more of a safety issue. At any rate, I found it conveniently located (it’s pretty much right behind the Home Depot) and not really all that threatening feeling, even after dark. There were dollies available so I could move my stuff. I did get a wee bit lost trying to locate my space the first time on my own, but eventually I found it and was able to break it in with a few stuffed boxes and the like.
That’s about all I’ve used it for thus far, although I’m sure I’ll be back to put more stuff in the next time I’m able to sneak into my own apartment alone (that sounds pathetic, doesn’t it?).
And although my renting of the unit came at a time when I was probably understandably not at my emotional best, the customer service I received made the renting process smooth for me. And that’s something I really value.

They require fingerprints — absolutely insane from a pissant little storage chain that doesn’t have the resources to protect information that valuable. Watching them file a index card containing our thumb and index-​finger prints in a freaking *file cabinet* (which didn’t even appear to be locked) was more than enough to make us cancel our rental agreement and walk away. PS to those who rent there now: Extra Space offers no language that protects you from having those prints shared with or sold to third parties.

This place is actually a perfect storage facility. The staff is extremely helpful and personable (especially Ashley). The units are very, very clean with high ceilings.
The neighborhood is a little shady, but security seems rock solid. Store here.
