My eyes suck! Vision has been going down hill ever since I hit the big 40… But I found a place I really like. This place is great! Doc Mozlin gave a very thorough exam and I just didn’t expect the doctor to be so damn funny.
Awesome staff, Tim and Jennifer had me pick a frame I never ever ever would have picked for myself and of course they are the best pair I have ever owned. On the flip side, Jennifer explained my benefits to me in a way that actually made some sense. The visit actually made my day. Who woulda thunk that going to the eye Doc would be a stellar experience. I would def recommend this practice if you’re looking for a cool place to get checked out.

Let me first say that I’m bias. I’ve been going to Dr. Mozlin since I was knee-​high to a grasshopper. Everyone there is so nice and funny. I had a blast there the other day.

I moved to Encinitas 27 years ago and I asked my then new next door neighbor for a referral to an optometrist. She referred me to Dr Mozlin and I’ve never had a reason to change. I’ve never had a problem with them and their prices seem reasonable.

Dr. Mozlin does thorough exams and can offer many options for your needs. He has a friendly, professional, and prompt staff whom can help you choose quality, reasonably priced designer frames! I have been going here for about 4 years and it is well worth your time and vision!

Absolute scam! This optometrist has a groupon deal that states you get an eye exam & $ 175 towards a pair of glasses for $ 59. Sounds like a great deal, right? I show up and they tell me that with Groupon I MUST buy a pair of prescription glasses TODAY (where lenses are seperate & glasses are seperate) or else I will pay $ 119 for the eye exam. Ummm so what’s the deal in this? NONE at all. I read the fine print to groupon again and it doesn’t say anything to that effect. The guys said if they could add that phrase they would but Groupon limits them to what they can write. My advice is to move on & find another OD. SMH

This review is for Dr. Mozlin and the staff. I agree with all the one-​star reviews.
Bottom line, I liked nothing about this office or these people. The feeling is one of scheming behind your back.
Their objective is to make money by selling you those glasses — overpriced as someone here has said — while enticing you to get in for the eye exam with some kind of a discount. They’re working the sales, but couldn’t care less about you.
I couldn’t wait to just be done with these people and never come back. And when I did go back to get my glasses the woman opening the business was 10 minutes late. No apology. Then she just handed me the glasses. I thought, well, don’t you need to see if they fit and if any adjustments had to be made? Anyway, did walk away, and did have to come back for them to be fitted.
I could go on for a long time about her inappropriate behavior, not just with being late but when I was looking for frames; the other front-​desk guy’s lack of helpfulness about my prescription; and Dr. Mozlin’s impatience during the exam. .. but you know, it just grosses me out. Hopefully with this review, it’s all over for me and that slimy office and staff. Certainly will never go back there again.

I’ve been going here since I was a teenager, and I’ve been through dry eyes, LASIK 3x, a cataract replacement lens and countless Rxs in between. To say the least, I’m a challenging case. Now I need readers. Ay!
I made the erroneous decision to see another optom in Encinitas because it was a one-​stop shop. I could see the ophthalmologist and the optometrist in the same visit. It was more of an eye mill, really, just horrible. Nice docs, but unqualified staff doing the exams.
I was in the midst of a trial lens from the horrible place and decided that I should actually have a real doctor give me the eye exam, instead of an optician. Huge difference!
After a few minutes and a couple jokes, Dr. Mozlin discovered that I didn’t have an astigmatism, and my Rx wasn’t even close to what I was given as trials. After over one year of visits and trials and surgeries, I can see with my multi-​focal lenses. Thank you! I will never go anywhere else, and I’m sorry I did.
If you’re looking for an honest, experienced and relaxed optometrist, call Dr. Mozlin. Oh, and Jill is wonderful, too. She helped me pick out lenses and fit me for them. She personable and knowledgeable.

I went there for an eye exam and to get new prescriptions for my glasses. Very nice staff and knowledgeable. Will be sending my family to this office again. Will update this once I get my new lenses back.

I have been going to Dr Mozlin’s office for glasses and contacts since i moved to Encinitas 4 years ago. I have only good things to say about Dr Mozlin and the staff. Professional, precise, helpful and most accommodating. Dr Mozlin has worked with me repeatedly to get the best fit and prescription for contacts, ensuring that my distance vision wasn’t sacrificed so that I can also read without reading glasses (ah vanity!), which is very challenging in my case. He always maintained a professional attitude and great sense of humor throughout my numerous fittings until he had tweaked it to both of our satisfaction. Jill and Tim have helped me with glasses, my insurance, contacts and glasses for my son, and replacements for broken or scratched lenses or frames all with professionalism and compassion. I can’t imagine going anywhere else and highly recommend this office for your vision needs.

My entire family gets eye exams and glasses here. They are wonderful. They even helped a picky 15 year old boy pick very cool frames… thank you Jill.

Very professional and pin-​pointy about performing a thorough eye exam and making sure your distance vision doesn’t overpower your reading vision. Dr. Mozlin and his staff are focused on your individual eye exam.
You won’t be disappointed. My exam resulted in a lower fee than was quoted on the phone. No surprises here, just quality and integrity — the latter can’t be «bought».

I’ve been going to Dr. Mozlin for close to 20 years. He is very professional and knowledgable. He has referred me for ophthalmological consideration because of possible loss of peripheral vision and for cataracts. And, he is incredibly funny, making the visits a blast. Five stars.

Came here initially for a new eye exam (Thank you KAISER for determining that my vision was not degraded enough for optical coverage!!). I used a groupon that gave me a great discount on frames, lenses and the exam. The staff was super helpful and friendly, they were very accommodating and the office was neat and clean.
My exam was thorough and the Dr. made sure to explore several options to help enhance my vision and help with the «tired eyes» and computer glare issues I have.
I walked out with cute frames and plan on returning the next time I need a prescription for glasses. =)

If I could give a minus 10 stars, I would. This entire review is about how insurance was attempted to be billed by the front desk and how I was called a liar from the front desk staff. The female doctor was lovely, and if she would move to a different practice, I would continue to see her. As I’ve worked in smaller medical and dental practices before, I know I will not be allowed to speak to the doctor directly to let her know the goings-​on of the front desk staff. So this is a way I can reach out to them instead of writing a letter that most likely will not get to the Dr. Like I said, I know how medical offices operate. I’ve worked in the front and the back. :)
I have new ins from my work. Found this place of business on the vision insurance website. Went in for an eye exam and a contacts exam on Sat, April 4. I have $ 200 worth of coverage for contacts. The vision insurance was not clear as to whether this included the exam or not. And this is where it went downhill. The front desk lady, as I was checking out, billed me for the exam and 2 boxes of contacts. This was close to $ 300 dollars and just before she clicked submit, she had me come around behind the desk to show me, «as we like to do this while the customer is here.» (should have been my first clue that there have been past issues with billing.) I said — I have not decided which contacts I want, why are you billing my insurance for 2 boxes of contacts? «Because we want you to get the maximum benefit from your insurance.» «Why can’t you wait until I come back for this required follow-​up exam to place an order?» no answer. I asked again, and got no answer. Then she told me, and showed me, that my balance would be $ 97. Uh, no. Then I slowly realized that the exam was part of my $ 200 annual benefit. After I asked her at least 4 times to take off the boxes of contacts to see if it would go through w/​o a balance owed, she finally did, and it showed I owed $ 0. I paid my $ 10 copay. So warning flag #1 — this lady tried to bill my insurance company for something I did not authorize, and had to repeatedly tell her to take off the insurance submission. This action that she was attempting to do could be considered very questionable. The contact exam was 119 — each box of contacts is 89.
Called yesterday for my prescriptions and they refused to give me my contacts rx, stating it’s their policy to have a follow-​up exam to see which contacts I like better, and which ones I will be ordering. I have not had contacts for about 2 years. And I understand that this is a requirement of this office. I respect that. However, in 20+ years of having contact exams, I’ve never been refused my rx or had to have a follow up exam to get my rx. I do not agree with this policy at all. I’m paying for something, and I expect to get it. I told them that I would be going with one of the choices of contacts, and the Dr had examined me with the contacts in my eyes at my apt on Sat, and I would be happy to return the other samples of contacts they had given to me. They are still refusing as of this morning to release my prescription to me. They did agree to release all my information to another doctor’s office when I go there for this follow-​up exam.
I was told repeatedly on the phone this morning that this practice would NEVER try to bill something that was yet purchased, was not finalized, and that is not their policy. I was told I was «VERY mis-​understood and confused» about how this billing happened. So basically I was called a liar. I’m not upset or angry at all. I’ve worked in the medical and dental field, with insurance, and I know how it works. I know what I saw on their computer as she was trying to bill my insurance for an exam and 2 boxes of contacts, I know what I was told, and I know she tried to collect $ 97 from me at my appointment. I wish now I would have let her bill the insurance and paid the $ 97, as I would have then had the proof in black and white.
My vision insurance is being wonderful in helping to sort this out. Once I get to another doctor and this practice releases my information, then they will get paid. And not one minute before. I’m very sorry I didn’t get to meet Dr Mozlin, he appears to be a great Dr according to most of the reviews on here. I don’t have an issue with the Dr I saw at all. But please beware of how you are being billed. And do NOT have a contacts exam unless you are amenable to going back for a follow up exam and having to wait to get your rx.
I do not want to get into a he said, she said on this forum. I see that the bad reviews were replied to, and I see the passive aggressiveness in the replies from the office. I will not be replying or making any other comments on my behalf. I am comfortable and confident in my review. It doesn’t matter what the office says in their defense to try and excuse themselves. I know what happened, and I’m giving an honest and objective review.

I had a Amazon Local deal for the eye exam and $ 175 towards a pair of glasses and it was awesome. I do not have eye insurance so it was a real life saver. I actually hadn’t had my eyes checked in about 5 years and they were very nice about it. The entire process took about an hour (getting my eyes checked and then picking out frames and getting everything set).
I did end up paying $ 150 there, but to be fair I got pretty expensive frames (they are Ray-​Bans) and my lenses were most of that extra money. if you have glasses you know how expensive it can get without insurance. At least I now know my new prescription and can go else where for any additional items (contacts, sunglasses, extra frames, etc.)
I was told it would take 5 – 7 days for my glasses to be ready, but they actually arrived three days later which was great!

Updating my review to reinforce how much I appreciate Dr. Mozlin’s continued care as I navigated the world of Lasik. After wearing contacts and glasses for more than 10 years, I finally decided to be brave and investigate Lasik. Dr. Mozlin was very reassuring and talked me through the process (I was VERY nervous about the procedure and possible side effects), and referred me to a great surgeon. The procedure went smoothly and I am ecstatic with the results. Dr. Mozlin saw me for the post-​surgery check up and was as professional, personable and funny as ever. Great place, friendly staff, smart and wonderful doctor — definitely deserves all 5 stars!

I purchased a Living Social deal for an eye exam and $ 175 towards prescription lenses and am so happy I did! I have noticed some eye fatigue at the end of the day and also some changes in vision when driving at night so I thought it was time for me to get myself checked out. I don’t have any vision benefits on my current insurance plan so I figured this would be a good way for me to get check out.
I had no issues making my appointment and was able to get in right away. The office has moved from it’s original location but is not hard to find because of the signage. The office itself was very clean and comfortable and I was greeted immediately. You can find the new patient paperwork on their website so I completed it before I came in.
The lady at the front desk (Jill?) was really warm and welcoming and put me right at ease. We went through a few primary tests for checking eye pressure, peripheral vision and examining the anatomy of my eye. One that was completed, I was able to see Dr. Mozlin. He was very thorough and also had a dry sense of humor which I fully appreciated it. He was a complete professional and confirmed my suspicion of one eye being weaker than the other when it came to seeing distance.
After the exam, I worked with Tim to find a pair of frames. I explained that since I would only be wearing them in my house or car, I would be fine with the least expensive ones and he found me a pair that were still stylish. He didn’t try to up-​sell me on any product and I never felt pressured.
I had a really great experience at Dr. Mozlin’s office and will continue to be a patient here. Thanks for everything!

I was terribly unsatisfied with my experience at Barry Mozlin’s. I bought a voucher from KGBDeals that said ‘Exam and $ 150 Towards Glasses’ with a Fine Print item that says ‘Valid for complete pair of glasses/​sunglasses only; must include frames and lenses’.
My girlfriend is currently uninsured and I figured that a coupon deal would be an inexpensive way of getting an eye exam done.
The staff were really friendly. They ended up giving my girlfriend a lens fitting test although I hadn’t signed up for it. I objected to the lens fitting charge and rejected the services and they gladly complied.
Things went downhill from then though. Most of their frames and lenses were overpriced and I couldn’t afford to buy them. They didn’t allow me to pick up my girlfriend’s eye exam prescription. They asked me to pay 85 $ above the 69 $ I had already paid for the deal. 154 $ for an eye exam (for glasses only) prescription !
Summary: I hope you didn’t get screwed over by the deal as well. I thought their services are reasonable, but I felt like they’re a shady outfit desperately reaching for your cash.

Dr. Mozlin is a gem! Tim was my cheerleader the whole time trying on new contacts he was so encouraging! AWESOME service
