I have never posted a review before, good or bad, but after my horrendous experience last Saturday, I felt extremely compelled. I ventured into Cash For Gold Encinitas for a 2^nd quote after visiting Gold Max in Carlsbad. At first the guy working there (don’t remember his name) seem pleasant enough and pretty straightforward. We had even talked briefly about the recent bad review on line before he got started. That should have been a clue not to go there, but I didn’t see the harm in getting a 2^nd opinion before making a decision.
I had a gold chain bracelet and a vintage ring with a citrine stone given to me by my grandmother before she passed away. Because I had other pieces of jewelry from my grandma and knew that this ring in particular I would probably never wear, I was willing to sell for a fair price, if not I might give it to one of my daughters.
At first the guy preformed all the same test that I witnessed Gold Max do less than an hour prior. He then offered me $ 175 for both pieces and said that he didn’t need the stone and that I could keep that. Gold Max was a little less, so I agreed to that selling price for both pieces.
He then took out a pair of pliers and began twisting my grandmothers ring into a smashed up piece of metal until he got the stone out!!! Then he handed the stone to me and said he needed to do one more test on the gold chain bracelet. He again placed another drop of liquid on the chain and declared that it was a fake. His demeanor changed from pleasant to almost angry. Took my grandma’s now crushed and crumbled ring, tossed it on the scale and said he would give me $ 25.00. When I asked him why would you offer me $ 175 for both without doing all of the tests… he sarcastically replied that he forgot the last one. I was in shock and almost speechless after what I had just seen. I explained that I would never have allow him to destroy the ring had I known that I would only get $ 25 and that Gold Max offered more for the entire ring, to be sold at a jewelry auction. He kept saying that the $ 25 he was offering was top price and was annoyed that I was so visually shakened. I reluctantly agreed, but felt physically ill from what he had just done in front of me. Again he kept saying he wasn’t going to buy a fake gold bracelet. I don’t believe this guy knows jack about what he’s doing.
As he was entering my information off my drivers license I sat silent, still in disbelief. At that point he had a much more aggressive and angry tone as if I tried to swindle him.
I calmly stood up, picked up the small smashed up piece of metal, and walked out the door while this guy is still claiming he is giving me top dollar. I barely got to my car before I burst into tears.
I returned to Gold Max hoping the original offer was still good. I could barely describe what I had just experienced at Cash For Gold Encinitas without getting emotional. Kathy was very compassionate and comforting, giving me the sense of reassurance that not all of these places are so scummy and unscrupulous. She said she would have never smashed up a ring like that in front of a customer, but rather lifted the prongs that secured the stone to remove it.
She also confirmed that my gold bracelet was indeed gold. She was able to pay me $ 160 for both pieces even though my grandma’s ring had been destroyed by Cash For Gold Encinitas.
If I can spare even one person from having to go thought the horrific experience I had with Cash For Gold Encinitas… then it was so worth my time in posting this review.
Gold Max in Carlsbad is far superior in every way. Kathy the store manager is just a wonderful person to do business with. She took the time to answer all of my questions, explaining just how the process works. Tries to make you feel comfortable and seems genuinely interested in providing the customer with an overall positive experience.
Kathy definitely made me feel better by the time I was leaving the store… I hope to have more happy transactions with Gold Max in the future.

Nice people! Fair price. They paid me over double of what Gold Max offered. Gold Max offered me $ 262 for my gold/​silver. Cash for Gold gave me $ 535. Honest and upfront.

Rip-​off!!! I brought in some sterling silver flatware and they offered me approximately HALF of what I ultimately got for it at another place. I also got another quote and it was also almost TWICE what these guys were offering.
