Spay Neuter Action Provides (SNAP) provides low-​cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats. SNAP has been bringing low-​cost spay/​neuter services directly to financially-​challenged pet owners aboard our iconic «Neuter Scooter» surgical bus. Procedures are performed under the highest standards by licensed veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians inside the state-​of-​the-​art mobile unit. SNAP also provides a referral service to private veterinarians who offer discounted spay and neuter procedures all over San Diego County. SNAP also provides the San Diego County spay and neuter rebates to qualified pet owners. Thank you for being a responsible pet owner and getting your pet spayed or neutered!

History

Established in 1990.

The Spay Neuter Action Project was co-​founded in 1990 by a group of woman volunteering at the local municipal shelter.

They figured out that after seeing countless stray animals come and go, they knew that adoption alone wasn’t going to solve the problem! There were simply too many unwanted animals and not enough homes! Theses volunteers realized that to reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters every year, it would be necessary to reduce the numbers of homeless animals coming into the shelters in the first place.

As of today, almost two decades later, SNAP has spayed and neutered over 50,000 animals in clinics all over SD County. The original Neuter Scooter, is a mobile surgery bus launched in 2003, and primarily serves communities through out San Diego County. The Neuter Scooters travel to various neighborhoods, providing affordable spay/​neuter services right where they are most needed.

Got my little dog fixed a couple of weeks ago with these guys! Have no bad words to say! Very fast, professional and with a lot of love to animals! Gnarly didn’t have any pain after the surgery and literally started running 5 hours later! It’s been 2 weeks and we haven’t had any problems so far!
Honestly, was very surprised to see all those negative reviews! Just wanna remind everyone that if you’re looking for some kind of Royal service and want your pet to be fixed on a red silky pillow, go to a regular pet hospital and pay 250 $ for the simplest surgery! These guys are volunteers and they are not trying to make YOU happy, they don’t even have to be nice to you, this is not a restaurant or a beauty salon where a customer is always right! Their mission is to help animals and I want to thank every single one of them for doing a great job!

Yesterday was the 4th time I have used the Neuter Scooter to spay/​neuter my kitties and have never had a problem, not one! Everyone I had to deal with was very professional and polite. My kitties never had a bad reaction and were fine and not in any pain the same day. I appreciate the low-​cost for the service that would of cost way more if I had to take him to the Veterinarian Office. I trust the SNAP Program & the Neuter Scooter 100%. Thank-​You so much.

This place is low cost with quality service! We were very pleased with their customer service and the care they took of our precious pup! The vet wanted to charge us over 300 $ to neuter her, and with a discount in our area she was spayed on Friday for only 55 $. She is recovering nicely. Thank you for taking good care, I highly recommend using the neuter scooter by Snap. I have also updated Amazon SMILE so that a portion of my purchases will go to this awesome program.

Very affordable and the people at the bus were very helpful and friendly. The lady on the phone was a little rough but was understanding when I told her that I tried to confirm by leaving a few message on the phone. The machine kept cutting me off and would say, «(beep) your message has been deleted» Luckily, when she called to confirm again I could answer the phone.

I took in my cat and dog to get fixed. They couldn’t take my cat because they don’t have an alternative anesthesia from ketamine which was annoying but understandable. They took my dog at 7am and I picked her up at 1:00… It cost 30 $ and when I picked her up they had given her a time released pain killer so I didn’t have to do anything but watch her licking. They also trimmed her nails for me. I believe they did a good job!

I had seen the Neuter Scooter parked at my local Petco so I decided to go online and see what it’s all about. After being informed, I called to make an appointment. The process was so smooth. Molly told me before surgery instructions, and I also received a courtesy call a day before the surgery. I arrived on site the day of, filled out paperwork, left Riley, and came back right at pick up which was just 4 hours later. The medication they use lasts 24 hours after the surgery so other medication wasn’t necessary. She felt a bit loopy and out of it for the rest of the day. But back to her normal energetic self literally the day after. It’s been a week now and her incision site is healing well. No follow up needed. They also provided her with her rabies shot for free, and in the paperwork it also states if they have other complications that is discovered ie hernias, fleas, etc they will treat it at no additional cost. Such a lovely experience. Will definitely take my future fur babies to SNAP.

This is a great program to go through to spay/​neuter your pet! They get booked quickly, but it makes sense since they are the cheapest and friendliest option out there! I called in to make my appointment and remember to leave a message the way they request it. The organization has so many volunteers helping out. I appreciated the volunteers knowledge and love for this organization as well, makes me feel more confident about bringing my pet.
I brought my puppy for her appointment and it was a smooth process. Fill out paperwork, drop your puppy off and come back at the designated time. The best part about this is that I did not have to do any follow up and no additional medications were required! It’s been a week now since my puppy’s appointment and she is full of energy and is totally wishing she could take her cone off already.
Support them if you can by bringing your pup here and helping them reach their goal of spaying/​neutering pets in various communities.

I got my baby Malfoy neutered here today. Dropped him off @ 7am and picked him up around 2:45. My little dude seems to be doing fine :) Thanks so much for such an easy & painless experience. I really appreciate the volunteers & this program for all that they do! This project is truly dedicated to its cause and offers very affordable care. (It was $ 50 for him to be neutered, which is awesome.) You can tell that the volunteers seem to actually want to be here. Made me consider volunteering, maybe I will next time the neuter scooter is in Claremont! Thanks SNAP!

I almost cried when I left my fur baby Odin. But I left at peace. They were all polite and professional. The reminder calls are awesome! Everyone was very nice and I felt at ease when I left my baby. I truly appreciate what they are doing for our fur babies. GREAT PRICE! THE STAFF IS AWESOME!

I had really great service today, but I was skeptical because one lady that I was on the phone with was kind of rude and sounded impatient the two times I spoke with her. If you’re having a bad day, then you really shouldn’t use your real name over the phone because I will call the manager and I will tell on you.
Today I dropped Hairy off at 7 am and picked him up at 1 pm. I filled out a piece of paper, paid $ 50 (cash only), and they took him away no later than 7:15. When I picked him up, they gave me a really cute award for him, and helped me load the carrier in the car.
He’s doing fantastic. It’s like the drugs didn’t even work because he was back to being a mental kitty as soon as he got into the house. I was happy with the cost and service, but I really wish I could have asked how he was before the anesthesia and when he woke up. Moms are always nosey AF.

I absolutely love SNAP!!! I had my lil chihuahua Jax (male) and my pit bull Kahlua (female), spayed and neutered with SNAP!
Everyone was extremely helpful from beginning to end!!! My fur babies were very well cared for in their hands! I couldn’t believe how adorable it was!!! GREAT SERVICE FOR A LOW COST!!! If my fiancé would ever allow me to get another pup, I will definitely use them again! I now refer all my friends and family to go there!!! Anyone can afford their prices! Mary Anne is one of the rudest people I have ever spoken to over the phone! She had originally told me I could make an appointment at the bus after not being able to be taken on the stand by list. So while at the bus I had told another employee what she told me to do. They let me know that I was misinformed and needed to call Mary Anne back to make the appointment. When doing so, instead of Mary Anne helping me make my apt she yelled at me for telling her other employee what she originally told me, told me I was extremely wrong, and came up with a «new story» of what she told me. (More information I was never told in the first place) the entire time on the phone with her she talked with hate in her voice and in the most condescending tone. I could only imagine how she actually treats animals. Probably the rudest person I have come in contact with in a very long time.
Oh and if you’re on stand by make sure you refer to it as stand by not wait listed. Mary Anne will act like she doesn’t know what you mean and then after awhile rudely say «you must mean stand by.» Like you’re an idiot or something.
I haven’t even gotten a chance to get my dog neutered and thanks to Mary Anne I don’t want to even come here for him. And by reading the rest of these Unilocal comments I shouldn’t, seems like a lot of poorly treated animals and infections.
Maybe they should have someone with a little more customer service, hell maybe just some more compassion to answer the phones.

I love SNAP an all their workers! They took such good care of my dog. They took my little Wendell (a pini pooh). He thinks he’s a pit bull. He was pretty aggressive, an they were able to take him without stressing him out. They clipped his nails, vaccinated him, licensed him, an even gave him a flea treatment, and a overall well check. All for free! They also did My daughter’s 2 kittens. All for free. My son missed the free day but was still able to get his three dogs fixed at a very low price. I don’t think he paid over $ 50 for all 3 dogs!!! And they took amazing care of all our animals. We love SNAP !!! We can’t say thank you enough

SNAP is a wonderful organization that is on a mission to help control the pet population by offering low cost spaying and neutering. They are a dedicated group of people that go out of their way to help decrease the number of impounded pets. It’s definitely important to make an appointment because spots book up quickly. They have a Neuter Scooter Bus Schedule (love the name!) available on their website that let’s you know the date and location of their next event. Thank you so much for all that you do!

My girlfriend got her 6 month old schnauzer neutered here and I’m really disappointed. They didn’t provide any pain medication for after the surgery and said, «the anesthesia is enough.» Shortly after bringing the dog home, he was crying and clearly in a lot of pain. Thankfully, I had some leftover pain medication from my own dog and gave him some. This place is not humane and should provide at least a day supply of pain medication considering the animals are having a surgery. Especially females that are getting spayed need pain medication, because it’s such a more invasive surgery than neutering.
Also, while my girlfriend was waiting to pick up her dog, a vet tech brought a cat out to give to a customer and the carrier broke. The cat just had surgery and fell straight on to the cement. After the owner caught her cat, the tech brought the cat back in the bus. The tech came out a minute later with the cat in a cardboard box carrier and said the cat was fine. I can’t believe the tech didn’t check the carrier prior to giving it to the customer and gave it right back to the owner after it fell on the cement.
I wouldn’t recommend bringing your pet here!

I took Koa, my male cat, to get «fixed» yesterday at SNAP in El Cajon. I wish I would have read these reviews beforehand. A friend recommended them to me and it’s a routine procedure, so I figured it would be fine.
After seeing his poor little kitty paws when we returned home that night, I now feel like a negligent parent.
He had been surprisingly active for being post-​surgery; I almost think whatever meds they gave him were actually a stimulant, as he was crazier than usual. Except — we noticed he wasn’t able to use his claws to climb on top of things.
Anyway, I took a look at his paws and noticed his nails had been cut — way WAY too short. Many of Koa’s claws had been CUT ALL THE WAY to the pink part (what I have learned is called the «ungual process»).
One nail was bleeding and had dried blood in the crevice of his claw (I’ll post a photo). There’s little nerves in there. I can only imagine how sensitive and painful it is to have nails cut to the nerve. You’d think people in the veterinary field would be cognizant of this.
I also made the mistake of generalizing all people within veterinary occupations as being animal-​lovers. It was evident this is false the way they were essentially tossing pet taxis out the door with little cats and dogs inside who had just endured surgical procedures. No care. No compassion. I don’t even want to think about the manner in which they handled the pets inside.
Needless to say, I learned my lesson. It’s unfortunate because I think the SNAP Project has good intentions and are working for a good cause. But I feel terrible for putting my pet in that environment. And I will never do it again.
