History

Established in 2013.

Partnerships – when founded on mutual trust, vision, and respect – can create lovely and lasting outcomes, and such is the case of the partnership between John Tinios and Chef Steve James. Always impressed and inspired by the beautiful and delicious pastries and baked goods created by Chef James – the star bakery chef of The Balsams Grand Resort – John knew the two would one day work together in some capacity. In the year 2006, the general manager of The Balsams notified John saying that Chef James was available for consulting. The two men – John and Steve – immediately knew there was more to their chemistry than a consulting agreement and, soon, they developed the concept of Popovers On The Square, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

As this partnership and its production company and culinary brand continue to grow, an additional Popovers – with an expanded full bar and full service menu – has opened its doors in the fine town of Epping, New Hampshire.

A totally solid spot to grab sandwiches and salads. I met up with a friend here as a convenient ‘halfway point’ when we were looking for something healthy. The interior is nothing magical (I get an upscale Denny’s vibe), but very pleasant. The selection of baked goods looks really tasty, and there is plenty of variety in everything from intriguing apps to specialty iced teas.
My friend had been there before, and swears by the chicken quesadilla, which she makes into two full meals. I ordered the «deviled eggs of the day,» which were buffalo (3.5 stars) and a salad with pesto, chicken and a giant popover! I’m happy to report that the popover was the star of the show for me … which makes total sense. It’s also worth noting that my salad was large, fresh, and definitely more than a meal’s worth.

We’d driven by this place a lot and had heard the good reviews so we decided to try it one night when The Tuckaway Tavern had a two hour wait. We were not disappointed.
The host and waitress were funny and pleasant. The restaurant itself was clean and open with big windows. It seemed to forsake a «theme» and just featured large booths and a dessert case inside. We decided to try the roasted beet and caprese sandwich, the chipotle ham and pulled pork sandwich and the pear gorgonzola salad between us and all were excellent. The orange cake for dessert was only OK. The prices were average, but the menus dinner entrees were nothing inspired and cost an arm and a leg.
This is obviously a breakfast place so the benefit of the doubt is with them since we were there late and we’ll certainly be going back to try the early morning menu next time. All in all, it was only average with some solid choices, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Oh my gosh. The popovers here are the best ever. You have to get them. The food is pretty good. Friendly servers. Try the orange cake for dessert. It tastes like an orange Twinkie. This resturant has great food. Say cool if you like this review. I will definitely be back.

Great breakfast place! The prices are a little higher than I think they should be, but the food is consistently very good. The only thing I would suggest is warming the popovers before serving and maybe switching the bacon that is currently used.
They have a great selection of coffee drinks to choose from. It (the coffee) is always great and so is the service. The décor is nice and the place is always clean! We have never had a bad experience!

Popovers is new to the Epping area, but the idea of a «bakery-​soup-​salad-​sandwich» joint is not so new. They offer a pretty tight, well rounded menu that has a little bit for everyone. That being said, it’s a bit underwhelming.
The food is well priced, and seems to be well made. The dishes are prepped fresh daily, and the soups are pretty good quality (tomato bisque is a staple here). That being said… it’s just boring.
If you’d like a quick meal that warms you up, and a cocktail or beer before the movies, check them out. It’s just… it’s boring! It’s not locally sourced («fresh» grape tomatoes in January?!?), and it’s just an old idea of a restaurant. There are better places in the area. Think Me and Ollies or The Green Bean in Exeter.
It’s a restaurant that you can’t lose at, you won’t go home mad or disappointed. The service is fairly quick and attentive, and again it’s well priced. You just won’t leave going «wow!».
All that being said, the popovers are good. So, at least they do their name justice.

Ugh I have no idea how this place is open for breakfast with the meal we were served. Probably the worst breakfast I’ve ever had and the service was just as bad. Why work in a customer service industry when you clearly hate people? But I digress…
With the name popovers you would think that at least the popovers would be good, but no so much. The only thing good on the plate was the fruit cup and we got an attitude when I asked for it instead of bacon.
I have no idea how good or bad the food is at lunch or dinner, but I can promise you that I will not be back to find out.

My arrival was so disturbing that I almost walked out. I arrived early for lunch. I was pointed toward the hi-​top tables and requested a booth. I am short and find hi-​top tables uncomfortable. There were several empty booths. The receptionist turned around, walked briskly to a booth and threw the menu down. She never looked at me or said a word. Outrageous. The waitress was wonderful, food was much better than my last visit. I had the angus burger. It was delicious. However, nothing made up for the reception. I won’t be back. Not worth it. I read a previous review which mentioned the same situation. Apparently it is acceptable behavior.

Nice to walk into a restaurant, mention to server that because of arthritis we can not sit at a high table, and got instant attitude. told, sarcastically we would have to wait for a regular table, not a problem. Asked how long the wait was, again a sarcastic «I have no idea, I can put you on the list» another server comes to our aide (looks at 1st server and shakes head) and says it will just be a couple of minutes .
Sat at table, ordered pancakes, because I am diabetic asked for sugar free syrup, «oh, we dont have sugar free syrup !» A restaurant that serves breakfast and thay do not have sugar free syrup.1st one I ever been to. wont go to again.

This place is solid– we’ve come here for brunch, sat at the bar at closing, had dinner in and done take out on multiple occasions. Never been disappointed. The menu isn’t broad, but it’s all good. It’s also the best bakery in town too if looking to grab a treat for that special someone.

Overall great atmosphere and great coffee. No complaints. The place is super cute and I highly recommend the white hot chocolate if your in the mood for something sweet. It is to die for.

When a restaurant is called popovers it should have extraordinary popovers. Unfortunately Popovers did not get the message. The popovers were lukewarm and just not great. The so so salads are served in a popover which makes it soggy. We did not have dessert so I can’t comment on them.

This is one of those places where the specials are consistently the thing to get and are usually better than anything on the menu.
Take for instance this week, the grilled cheese with pulled pork and pineapple sandwich — the thing was amazing and unfortunately one week only.
The wine list is small but very good. Great ambiance sitting outside when the weather is nice. Friendly service and good management that’s responsive to requests.
The loyalty program is also a good deal. You have to pay $ 5 for the loyalty card — but they pre-​load it with $ 10 credit. Pay for one meal for you and your date and you now have enough for a free lunch or something along those lines the next time you come in…

The first time my co-​workers & I ate there for lunch; the waitstaff was extremely slow so we ended up only having time for soup before mad dash back to work.
The second time I tried it the wait time was much better. Upon recommendations I ordered the salmon salad and had an éclair — extremely disappointed on both counts.

So we were told that this place is supposed to have best desserts in town. Maybe it does. But the overall quality was just good. There was nothing magical about the crème Brule or the Chai lattes or any of the popovers. I’ve had much better in other places. The service however wad great and the staff was very nice.

Love having this place so close to home. Great food and service and desserts are amazing. Try the clam chowder with a warm popover you can thank me later! They offer take out parking, an outdoor eating area, movie and meal deal (kinda like the old galley hatch offer) and Downeast cider in tap.

This place has gone downhill.
Came in here the other day to order a slice of cake and espresso at the «to go» counter.
The employee behind the counter was rude and the cake was terrible.
The only thing worse than the cardboard-​like cake was the obnoxiously sweet frosting.
If you want cake, it would be more worth your while to walk down to market basket and pick up a box of Betty Crocker.

Came in for lunch once, so this might be updated when I go back again. I bought the Chipolte Ham & Pork Panini with an iced tea. The panini was warm and tasty, the iced tea was cold and refreshing. Prices were on the higher end, so I can’t see myself visiting too often. We bought a sweet when we left, which was a little on the high end as well but very rich.
The staff was wonderful. Very professional, attentive, and fast with service, the pastry chef was very friendly too. On the way out, I left my keys at the table, and luckily one of the busboys picked them up and held them for me while I was freaking out in the parking lot.
I’ll be going back to try other items, but for now I’m a fan!
