Under the leadership of head instructor Magid Hage, the students of Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Escondido have achieved their personal health, self defense and competition goals. The no-​pressure, family environment experienced at the academy is a welcomed escape from the stresses of work and school, quotas and deadlines. Our ever growing children’s class keeps the students’ attention by teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fundamentals through fun drills and activities. Beginning and advanced classes are set at a pace to introduce several new techniques while ensuring that everyone understands. Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

Professor Magid Hage was born on 1968, in Bahia Brazil where he lived most of his life. Throughout his life, he participated in the training of many martial arts including Karate and Capoeira. However, he finally felt at home when he discovered Jiu Jitsu in 1995. His first instructor was Professor Daniel Valverde (black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo), with whom Professor Magid Hage trained until he acquired the purple belt in 1998. In Brazil, he participated in many local and national tournaments in which he earned many titles including being the first place champion in the Copa Kildere, and the first place champion of the state of Bahia. He moved to San Diego California in December of 1998 where he came to know and learn from the Jiu Jitsu instructor Marcelo Pereira with Gracie Barra.

After much dedication and training, he earned the titles of first place champion in Copa Pacifica and in the California State Championship, and second place in the Pan American Jiu Jitsu Champion

I trained with Magid and crew for a few years off and on. Off and on because I didn’t know it at the time but had a thyroid problem that made it very difficult to train (hyper-​thyroid, so it was like I was massive adrenaline constantly, but didn’t know why)… Anyway, with regard to people saying they had to keep paying, I can say Magid always honored his verbal agreement with me and I had to cancel several times. I restarted and cancelled, over and over again.
The only reason I didn’t give Magid a 5 star is because the last time I cancelled, he accused me of being bi-​polar because I used to post that I loved the classes on my facebook page, yet felt horrible at other times… I had a medical issue that was very serious and caused me a LOT of emotional pain. I really didn’t need an already hard decision made harder by making me feel bad when I had to take care of myself. I almost died a few months after quitting the last time.
But I can’t lie, I enjoyed BJJ and the group of guys there are really great. Honestly, Magid as a great school, and his son Magid is also a very good instructor. Plus there are so many black belts there now (who compete at high levels) that you really get high level instruction almost every rolling session.

*DO NOT Sign up at this school!!! My kids attended Gracie baja in Escondido and they had a good time. Professor magid was always very nice and very chatty. Has a way with words. It came time to part ways when we were moving out of the area so I cancelled both of my children’s memberships in writing and attached a second paper in my own writing why we needed to cancel. I handed it directly to magid in March 2013. A few months ago I had some strange bank activity so we reviewed my bank account back a couple years and that’s when I noticed magid and the company he uses to take payment, WERE STILL PULLING OUT MONEY twice a month at $ 90.00 each time!!! Whoa! So I stopped payment Immediately and tried to contact them several times. I have gotten the run a round for months! Very unprofessional. Finally he called me back and said his company needed a month to investigate… so me being a nice person said ok. Even though they basically they have been stealing from me for over a year. The money I use to feed clothe and shelter my kids with and work extremely hard for, just like all of you.
After a month he said I would get my money December 15th. 2014. GREAT! I was so relieved. That day came and went with no word and I attempted to contact him several times after through a messenger application which showed he received and read my messages. Very disappointed and i feel extremely taken advantage of. The money stolen from me is over $ 3,000.00. So now the only way to get back my money that was taken is to take him to court.
Very saddened at the way they have handled this business. Please think twice about signing up!!! I never thought he would do this to me. We were cool. Had a mutual friend even that referred me… I own my own business too and was very hesitant to Unilocal but this is not how you conduct yourself as a business owner. You don’t steal money from honest clients. If it was a mistake, you make it right.

My son has been a student for a little over a year. BJJ has helped him get healthier, be a better sportsman, and has boosted his confidence. The coaching staff is amazing — they are great with kids and are also actual masters of the sport.

My kids have been to 2 studios in Escondido. The first mma place was ok. This feels like home. Both my sons felt comfortable immediately and were welcomed with open arms. The most important thing I noticed right away is they were LEARNING the art right away not just in a jungle gym class. You definatly get your money’s worth of education for the kids. Magid, Lil Magid, George and Daniel are amazing instructors. I’m so happy we found this school.

Both professors are top notch instructors and competitors. Great kids class! Kids get the greatest experience possible for confidence building and self defense here. I have been a student now at Gracie Barra Escondido for seven years. This place is a second home and the other members are family.
If you’re interested in learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this is the place. There are people that train here that live over an hour away and are dedicated. I’ve seen people’s lives completely change while under instruction of professor Magid Hage.

I’ve been training here for about a year. This has been my first martial arts experience and I couldn’t have picked a better gym. The owner and instructors are all nice and very helpful. We train hard but at the same time it feels like a family — everybody is easy going and we have a great time training every day.
Also, there’s a great mix of experience to draw on. There are several black-​belts that train and coach regularly. This is an excellent environment to learn and train in.
If you’re thinking about starting BJJ, stop thinking about it and come train. Just go in an take the intro class, you’ll see what I mean.

I train at Gracie Barra Pasadena. I was planning on visiting the area today & called to see if I could come in and visit the dojo. George (who’s a Black Belt & instructor) was very nice & invited me to come in and train free of charge.
I met Professors Magid Hage & George King this morning. They run an informal open mat training session on Saturday mornings from 9:30 — 12:30. What a NICE group of guys to train jiu-​jitsu with! They made me feel comfortable and right at home. If I lived anywhere in this area, this would be my dojo. The black belts are excellent, patient instructors… just a really great group of people. The other guys were super nice and a lot of fun to roll with & learn from.
I cannot more highly recommend Professor Hage’s Gracie Barra Escondido as a wonderful place to learn & train Brazilian Jiu-​jitsu.

I recently began training here with Professor Magid after training for many years in a Shaolin Kempo system. I really enjoy working out here, and the people are great and try to help you as much as they can! The techniques are awesome, and the professor is friendly and really knows how to teach the material. Questions are always welcome in class, and the workout is amazing! This is the real deal!

My husband loves this place. He has trained in martial arts for many years. Studio is professional, clean, safe and knowledgeable. Professor is trustworthy and has set up an environment that is both challenging and fun. Everyone is treated with respect.
My son also attends the kids’ class at the dojo and he absolutely loves it! For a very social and active boy who had no interest in the «typical» sports like baseball and soccer, we have found jiu jitsu to be his calling. He has fun, learns a lot, makes a ton of friends in class and has even competed in a competition (his choice, not a requirement). We will continue his jiu jitsu training indefinitely!

Ok, I’ve been training with Magid for almost 2 ½ years with my 2 sons and I would say that we love BJJ more then ever! Just had our first tournament last Saturday and all 3 of us are more motivated to train and grow as competitors and adapt in self defense.

Beware of this instructor. He is a nice thief. His favorite trick is to get you to sign a contract and assure you that it can be broken at any time. He tells you to give him 30 days to cancel. He neglects to tell you that he will not call the company to cancel until your contract is up. He always seems to pull out a few more months of dues even after you’ve told him to cancel. Go ahead and train here but you WILL get ripped off, that’s a guarantee.
