Ice-Plex

Skated during public session. There were a few serious skaters practicing double jumps. I was just skating here and there and all of a sudden, one of the jumpers came toward me at full speed & yelled at me, «excuse me!» She was set to jump where I was standing. Of course I got scared but I apologized to her. But then, it was a public session and not freestyle. Regular skaters have the right of way.. . sort of, or am I wrong?

Unfortunately a bad experience. The ice on the rink blows! I may be inexperienced, since last I was on the ice was 10 years ago, but my skate kept catching on all the grooves… They need to take better care of ice or redo the rink in general. The guy at the skate booth was unpleasant, didn’t acknowledge me on 2 occasions when I reported the bottom of my skates being damaged and unsafe, ate crap and nearly twisted my ankle the first time around because the sole was slightly detached. You know who you are, maybe a smile would have been somewhat better over giving the silent treatment and throwing a new skate at me!

We had our girl’s 8 years old birthday party here today and it was a blast! Not only did all the kids have fun, but also their parents. We got the silver package and it was a great deal ($ 235 includes an ice cream birthday cake, two large pizzas, drinks and 10 skaters) and you will have a staff as the host! Trust me, this is the best deal in terms of having a fun birthday kid’s party at a reasonable price! Our girl had already said that she wants to have her birthday party here again next year! But I am sure we will take her back to skate sometime sooner than her next birthday!

Don’t come here unless you already know how to skate. The staff will watch you struggle but wont help you at all. And the support walkers they rent are for children not adults. I’ll never come here again. Very disappointed. Waste of my money today unfortunately.

The skate and dine, now named «Breakaway Café», has new owners! To all the people that had bad experiences with the old place, give them a try. The place was cleaned top to bottom. They also have new food items like homemade chili, which is great! Oh, and they still serve beer!

It was a nice place to try out. Had fun and didn’t fall Woohoo. We took my fiancées smaller sibling, and unfortunately could not get one of those skating helpers. They rented them out for the whole day and unfortunately didn’t have more than 5 –_​-​. Other than that, the experience was fun.

The public skating was absolutely gorgeous during winter wonderland at Christmas time, plenty of parking, several options for the kids to help them skate (easy riders or seals), nice skates, cool modern lockers, plenty of benches to sit. I loved the sectioned off area for little children, which was pretty big. We spent 3 hours mostly in the kids area. The addition cost to rent easy riders/​seals is $ 10 but its for all day. You better not let go of that thing or a kid will snatch it. Theres no way to tell which one was yours after its gone. So you have to lug it with you everywhere you go. It was kind of challenging toting it around out of the rink with kid and food through the crowd.
I was very disappointed with the unpleasant staff members. Otherwise, I would given the place 5 stars. From the person at the ticket counter, to the person checking wrist bands, to the person who got our skates. Not one person had a personality, let alone a smile. I wasn’t expecting great food in the diner but I was expecting friendly service. No one was friendly, they moved at a snails pace, never smiled and I got the feeling no one wanted to work that day, especially the elderly woman who mumbled and never looked up at me taking my order. The young lady who also seemed inconvenienced made me nachos and cheese in a snap but I hadn’t ordered them. I waiting a ridiculously long time for the food I did order and there was no one in line. When I finally decided to ask how long it would take for the nuggets I thought well maybe I’ll just take the nachos instead of the nuggets until she said the nachos cost more than the nuggets. Ummm… what? Nevermind. I was nice of course, it’s Christmas time after all. So I tried looking at the bright side, at least my kids corn dog had plenty of time to cool off while it sat on the counter until she grabbed it and popped it back in the microwave until it was not only hot, but scalding hot. I burned my finger getting the paper off of it. Great, now I have to wait even longer for it to cool off before my 3 year old can eat it. Not to mention they heat up individual orders of frozen fries or nuggets one at a time. I kept thinking, why aren’t there more fries on that tray? I stood there long enough to see that they need to make some changes. Thank goodness a third lady came in who definitely knew what she was doing, was nice, considerate, and immediately handed me food.
We will gladly go back to skate but I will never walk back into that diner again. We will pack a lunch and eat in the parking lot.

My daughter has been taking lessons at ice Plex for over a year. She started as a beginner and has advanced to freestyle 4. Each coach along the way have been knowledgeable and great skaters. In fact it looked like so much fun, that I signed up for some classes myself. My daughter has been in private lessons with Dawn who has helped her choreograph a freestyle routine that she will be performing in October. She has also been on the synchro team which she has really enjoyed with Coach Nicole. This has been a team experience that I’m so glad that she’s been a part of. I highly recommend ice plex for ice-​skating coaching and being a safe place to bring kids!
So there are a couple of things that could improve. The pro shop seems the cater to hockey and carry very little items for girls. They are nice and I did not deduct stars. Here is the biggie! The food shop is clean but could use a menu change and updating! The only thing I bought there is a prepackage Starbucks mocha! I am glad they had that but there’s not much healthy there! Every time I’m there and I’m hungry I drive over to chipotle or Jamba Juice!

My daughter loves coming here. She enjoys her classes and instructors. The prices are reasonable and the facility is nice. I also like that at the end of the class semester there is a little performance. The parents dig it and the kids have fun. The only thing I think needs improvement is making sure the blades on the rental skates are sharpened.

My family loves this place. We’ve been coming here for swim lessons and ice skating the past two years. The staff is super friendly. After each swim class they get a treat from the front desk. We pay $ 65 for eight lessons. Can’t beat that price! Plus, I love that it’s indoors and the pool is always warm! Also, half price ($ 5) during last hour of public skate.

I gave this place two stars because there are two ice surfaces. However my experience today was very disappointing. The neglect is very noticeable. Dirty, smelly, & dark. The ice surface was horrific and dangerous. Drops of water falling from the ceiling causing the surface to be full of ice bumps making it dangerous. I hit more then one which almost caused me to take a bad fall. I’m not sure why this ice rink hasn’t taken notice and do what needs to be done to make it safe to skate. I do remember a time when the facility was top notch, but not any more. I am glad I have other options to skate at because I will not be coming back.

The Ice-​o-​Plex is where I learned to ice skate. To my memory, it’s the only place I think I’ve ever skated. It’s a a lot of fun, even if I am terrible at it. Still, the Ice-​o-​Plex provides a great escape from the blistering heat of the summer months. It also served as the home of the San Diego Gulls until the end of last season. They will now be the San Diego Sabres because the name is going to be used for the team playing at the Sports Arena.
They also have broomball! In my opinion, it’s the funniest sport on ice. Check the website to fill our waivers before you go. It is an older complex, but it is well maintained and they have a lot to offers.

Great place to get some fun exercise! Our Jr. High from Calvary Chaple played broom ball against Vista Calvary … We won 9 – 1! Great facility, Concessions and equipment. Lots of fun!

Ten bucks to skate for four hours… includes rental
Place your admission sticker on your arm… but do dress warm, it is FREEZING INSIDE…
Three bucks to rent a locker… but I say leave your crap in the car…
I was pretty stoked on this rink… They played cool music… and loud…
No sightings of Tonya Harding… but I did find some hockey pucks in the ceilings…
The only downfall was there did not seem to be much ice rink supervision… but other than that. this place seems well maintained, friendly staff, friendly patrons.
Surely I will make the trek up here again to get my skate on. ice that is…

We just held a birthday party here for one of my kids, and a great time certainly was had by all. All of the kids really enjoyed themselves, and my kid was super happy. Overall, it was a big success, but there are some areas that could be improved.
I think the website could use a little help. A few things weren’t as clear as they could be, and I could have used a little more information — i.e., the fact that the cake would serve 25, or the ability to change the number of guests after I booked the party.
But once we got there, the customer service we received was excellent. Our party host was Stephanie, and she was super friendly and helpful. And the Iceplex took care of everything — we didn’t have to bring anything except party favors (little dollar store gloves, which were utilized by several of the kids). That was really nice.
The food was ok; the pizza was the kind of pizza that used white and cheddar cheeses. Meh. The cake was yummy though, although it was pretty bare bones. It was just white and said «Happy Birthday XXXXXX» (my kid’s name).
The facility itself is pretty old and tired. And the rental skates left a lot to be desired. A couple of the adults had to exchange their skates because they were beat up and worn out.
Based on the facility, the food and the rental skates, I might have given the Iceplex two stars, but the great service bumped my rating up a star or even a star and a half.
So if you’re thinking of hosting a birthday party here, I’d say «Give it a go!»

We came here for a fun outing on my fiancé’s birthday. I had never skated in this ice skating location even though I live down the street. (My niece had a birthday party here a few months ago, but I did not skate at that time.) It was a lot of fun! It was ¹²⁄₂₇ so very crowded with a lot of out of towners but full of holiday spirit! It was decorated with santa and frosty. It is an older building so a little musty, but I won’t complain having an ice skating rink in Escondido! Free skate for adults was only $ 10 and this includes skate rentals. $ 9 for kids.
We will definitely be back!

My daughter recently had her birthday party here. The staff was nice and helpful. Our party area wasn’t as private as I would have liked but everyone really enjoyed it! Id definitely do it again!

We enrolled our 3 year old son in the parent/​child swimming class. We felt the instructor wasn’t doing anything to help our son. He didn’t show us any drills or techniques to do. He spent most of his time with the other little boy in the class and barely talked to our son except to tell him to «shoosh» whenever he started to cry. It was money down the drain. We now have our son enrolled at the YMCA where he feels much more comfortable and is doing great.

So much fun, at a reasonable price. This is not as romantic as some Ice Rinks, but it is great to watch some hockey or a mild date night!

How can you not love ice rinks? Brings me back to my childhood days in Canada.
If you go to the early public sessions, you can generally practice figure without too much interruption for about an hour and then the 10 year old hockey players will cut up the ice pretty badly. $ 8.00 a session (8:30−11:00am)
Freestyle sessions, on the other side of the rink, are pretty open. You sign in at the desk if the lady is cutting the ice and pay after. I went at the 9:15 session and probably shared the rink with about 6 other skaters. I had ample amount of room to practice. It probably would have been deader if their wasn’t a competition next week. $ 9.00 a session, usually 45 minutes– but you don’t get the kids on hockey skates destroying the rink and throwing snowballs at each other. I’ll pay the extra.

It’s an ice rink in the desert of Escondido. What did you expect???
It’s clean enough as ice rinks go. I would like to see a decent pro shop but I know the market for hockey gear in SD is not a huge one.
This place is better than nothing :)

After calling and leaving a complaint for Iceoplex General Manager, Pierre Dufour, I got a call back from his staff member a few days later.
This staff member listened to my input and promised to implement basic changes to the public skating venue such as new skates, new shoes strings and better ice conditions.
That is exactly what I’ve requested. Also Iceoplex has issued me a refund.
Hopefully, basic and simple changes can minimize injuries and other skating problems.

What a crap shoot for an ice rink. If you are looking for the moldy, musky, old time ice rinks; we found it. We were in the area and stopped by to see if this place could be a new rink to pick-​up hockey. Methinks not. I am assuming the local team, The Gulls, was on one side of the ice practicing on drills. We might have come in at the later half of the drills, but these boys could definitely use all the practice they could get. Cross passes 3 on 2 — poor. And, some of these boys could use some anger management. There’s anger and passion, but missing a shot because you were in front of the puck and then dropping a string of cursor words followed by a baby’s temper tantrum with hitting your stick against the boards, please. With little kids around and on the second rink.
I digress on the review! It was pack full of small kids about the ice, training. But, for a staff member of the rink to feel the need to comment and defend, I will definitely pass and recommend Ice Town (La Jolla) or the remodel UTC.

Although this place is one of kind in San Diego, the staff’s attitude needs some adjustment. They denied a small kid an easy walker because they were going to close in half an hour. The small café was dirty and unclean, wipe a table down once in a while.
Would I come here again, maybe since its the only ice rink in north county. But I will have to have a different attitude dealing with the staff

As we make our way through the Southern California «winter» with the closest snow up at Palomar Mountain, the Iceoplex is a closer choice for a fun way to spend an afternoon.
I have been to Iceoplex several times, mostly in middle school, and hadn’t been in about 4 years. My husband and I showed up for the public session on a Sunday from 12:30 — 2:30 pm. It was affordable at $ 10 per person for entry and skates. We laced up and hit the ice — no pun intended on my part, I have the bruises to show for it.
The ice was well-​maintained despite the rink being pretty crowded. The only downside to the Iceoplex is it smells like body odor and wet clothes. There is an extra charge for personal lockers, but we just stored our shoes on top of them.
I’m not as good at skating as I used to be, but I’ll be back once my bruises (and my pride) heal to give it another go.
