History

Established in 1981.

The firm was started by me, Stephen Behrends, July 1, 1981. From 1982 to 1984 Jeff Matthews worked with me. In the early 1990’s, Kevin Swingdoff and Cyndee Haines became part of the firm. A couple of years later, Bill Critchlow joined us. Kevin and Bill practiced primarily bankruptcy law while I did bankruptcy and tax settlement cases. Cyndee did family law. In 2012 Bill went to a bigger firm, Harder, Wells, Baron & Manning, where he continued to practice bankruptcy law and in 2013 Kevin left to run the bankruptcy department at Shlesinger & DeVilleneuve. Cyndee left private practice in 2014. The firm name is now Stephen Behrends, Attorney at Law, PC.

Business Owner

I have been married for 35 years and have two adult children and two grandchildren. Eugene has been my home for 39 years and while I love to travel, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I enjoy sailing, bicycling and skiing, both downhill and cross-​country.

I know the challenges of being a small business owner because I have managed my own law practice since 1981.

I love practicing bankruptcy law because I know that I am helping people resolve their problems and get back to a normal financial life. I feel the same about getting settlement offers approved for clients with tax issues that have taken over their lives.

I received a BS in Economics from the University of California, Riverside in 1974, a JD from the University of Oregon in 1978 and an Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of San Diego in 1983.
