I’d stick to drinking at this place. I ordered a burger and it was a really thin overcooked piece of meat. You order at the bar and they bring it to your table. If looking for a gourmet burger then this isn’t the place for you. Nice staff and customers… very friendly place. I took a pic of the décor because I really dug the blankets they had for drapes ;)

I’m from the east-coast… So naturally I’m drawn to seedier bars. This place rules. Total mixed bag of folks that hang here. Watch out for creeps, because they are sure to be lurking. Pool, nice smoking patio and amazing soul food! Also great French fries!

I have to feel really strongly before giving such a negative review like this. The staff here are friendly enough, and I’ve never had a complaint about their bar drinks. However, I have to mention that after last night’s meal, of which was ready in about 30 min on a quiet night, my friend and I became really sick. I had ordered the cheeseburger with bacon and collard greens, and my friend got the fried pickles and chicken strips. My friend spent the night puking, and I in the bathroom as well, for a different reason(not pleasant, I know). Also for the record, we were stone cold sober, and literally were just looking for some late night grub. I’m so bummed because I’m a big fan of their gumbo, but homies, PLEASE check your expiration dates and health codes. I do not feel good right now.

Sometimes, when I am feeling a bit crummy I come to the Horsehead to make myself feel even more crummy and then have a drink and feel great, and then crummy again. There is something both magnificent yet terrible about this place that makes it float from void to void. I am not sure if it is the stained and dated carpet or the sometimes puke like smell of said carpet. I will say that the drinks are inexpensive and strong. The food is greasy and a bit delicious, especially when you are looking at the bottom of a pint glass after your 6th drink. The Horsehead is definitely a place that I keep coming back to for more.

eh, crowd that hangs out here is weird. I have had way better bar food elsewhere.

Things have definitely improved here. The salads are surprisingly awesome. The honey mustard dressing is very spicy, would be my only quibble on that count … And, in the summer, flies(as always) spring eternal on the patio.

My favorite bar hands down! This is where my friends and I always end up hanging out and their bacon cheese fries and strawberry lemonade vodkas are delicious! Will be back again and again!

Don’t offer take out if you’re not set up properly with plastic to go containers(available on Amazon) for your oily wet items! Just got our delivery from grub hub of greens, gumbo, and other items all soaked through and leaking through the cardboard containers all over the bag! Umm thanks. Even if the food were good I’m so annoyed by the fact that I’m too busy cleaning and transferring everything into different containers that I can’t even eat my cold food. What an absolute waste of money!

Great nachos!!! I’m new to the area and this place has become a quick favorite! It’s a relaxing atmosphere with very friendly staff. I have also had the jalapeño poppers and they were excellent. Good quantity for the price. Will be returning again soon!

I will never come to this establishment again they are discriminatory against the disabled and kicked out my friend because he is in a wheel chair AFTER we had ordered our food. my friend and I were perfectly sober and there was no reason given.

This place. Sadly I hate it more than I love it. The food is the main draw for me, followed by the space itself. The drawbacks would be the staff dynamics(and the subsequent influence on the way the food/drinks come out) and the policies of the ownership who seem to make themselves nearly impossible to reach, at least when I have tried on two occasions. On an ideal day, when the right person is cooking one can enjoy catfish, gumbo, red beans and rice, and other Cajun staples. I hear the nachos are fantastic as well. On an off night the food is not so good. When the right person is pouring, your drink might be appropriately strong, otherwise it will be weak. However the staff behind the bar are generally knowledgeable, professional, and efficient. Though when challenged about the bar’s policies they will just give you a blank stare and recite their boss’ and OLCC policy like a talking head on the news. How irritating, just say it in your own words, show some personality, maybe even apologize for your jerk of a boss or our state’s absurd laws. If it wasn’t for the food, this last part would drive me to give this place negative stars if I could. On every single occasion that I have been here, someone in my party get’s «cut off» before they are even remotely inebriated. In addition, there are times I can go to the bar and get two drinks(one for me, one for the wife), other times I am refused, and allowed only one drink. The inconsistency is infuriating. I will take my money to an establishment that allows me to obtain a drink for my wife instead of making her have to get up from dinner and get her own. Maybe that is how the owner treats his wife, but his establishment will not treat MY wife as such. I’d say this to the owners face, but again whenever I ask his staff about the guy I get a bunch of BS. Who wants to do business with a person that does not offer a channel for feedback? Not me. I’ll go across the street to The Rogue where the pour is solid, the staff interactive and animated, and the food is consistent.

I love the food and most of the bar tenders. But last week some bar tender I had never seen before, with a white beard, charged me for my Shirley temple. I’m pregnant and the designated driver for 3 people. It was even happy hour. I hate to say but that has ruined my wonderful opinion of that bar. I think I will go try other places down town now. They had never charged me for a Shirley temple before, in fact no bar had ever charged me for one. I almost want to raise Cain and get my 3.50 back. Yeah I was charge $ 3.50 for a soda with a fucking cherry in it. Wtf?

From the drinks I had they were a very heavy pour which is great. Food looked really good from the party I was with. There are about 3 – 4 pool tables but the real gem is the outdoor seating which is pretty nice.

Alright man, I still like this place. It does what it does well, and the art and music are right up my alley. Everything I wrote before about the food still stands(short version: get the gumbo, collards, or nachos), and the kitchen is pretty damn consistent with the quality. The inconsistent pour strength problem has been sorted out, and yeah, they’re not as strong as they used to be, but I ain’t gettin’ any younger, and I’m told that you can’t live without a live-r. The douchey patron problem has all but evaporated thanks to good bouncing and the downtown revitalization(more places that attract douchey patrons). The staff are outstanding human beings who will more than return the favor if you treat them with respect. Delivery is available via Pony Express. Be advised that the fried things don’t travel well unless you live pretty close by.

UPDATE — Our ribs were cooked TENDAYSAGO!!! That does it. That’s the last time we have anything to do with Horsehead. Some idiot forgot to remove the tape with the date written on it. The date was TENDAYSAGO! We didn’t eat them(would you?) and demanded — and got — a refund from Pony Express. We ordered takeout, again, ribs and burger, again, but when my wife went to unwrap the Saran Wrap from the ribs, there was a tape with the date still on it! Never again. We wouldn’t eat at Horsehead if our lives depended on it. I hope it doesn’t, this time.

Anyone who calls Horsehead a «dive» bar, clearly had never gone to the late and great John Henry’s. All be it not the cleanest bar in town, it’s got serious character. The clientele are mostly retired rummies in the afternoon/early evening, with a shift towards the younger crowd around 8−9pm. The have happy hour prices from open to 9pm every single day. $ 3.25 Well drinks and $ 2 more for top shelf if well worth it, because their bartenders are heavy handed pourers. The beer is even cheaper, but since so don’t drink it, I have no idea of the pricing. They have excellent bar food and large portions. My favorite is the catfish sandwich with Mac and cheese side.
