Many Hands Gallery is an art gallery located in Eureka’s Old Town. We specialize in featuring a variety of local artisans as well as imported treasures from around the globe from artist cooperatives, fair trade organizations, and general importers.

History

Established in 1990.

Many Hands Gallery is a unique art gallery located in Eureka, a Victorian seaport on the remote North Coast of California. The Many Hands Gallery tradition began when Phil and Lunel Haysmer first opened the Gallery in 1990. For over two decades Many Hands has offered a brilliant selection of locally handcrafted items from Humboldt County, creative wares from West Coast artists and select imports from around the world.

In 2012, Astra Burke, the longtime store manager and art buyer, purchased the gallery from the Haysmers. It is Astra’s intention to maintain and expand the unique and eclectic selection of treasures from around the globe.

Many Hands Gallery’s mission is to provide gifts with meaning and history. Each and every product found in the Many Hands storefront in Eureka and in the online store have been carefully hand-​selected to represent a dedication to fine craftsmanship, unique ethnic and local artisans and to a deep appreciation of international history, religions and spir

Astra B.

Business Owner

Astra Burke is a 5th generation, life-​long resident of Humboldt County. She grew up on a self-​sustaining farm in the rolling foothills of northern California. Her independent self-​reliant spirit honed through the homesteading life-​style has led her to take on unique challenges in life. Astra has dabbled in event planning, mead making, sustainable gardening, mural painting, herbalism studies and an assortment of other creative and sustainable arts. Over the past few years she has spent extensive portions of time traveling solo through Latin America, exploring the art and culture of the modern and indigenous cultures she encountered.

After working as the manager and buyer of Many Hands Gallery for over 8 years, Astra purchased the gallery from the previous owners who were ready to retire. She looks forward to continuing the Many Hands Gallery Tradition and taking the Gallery in new directions in the future. She hopes to integrate her personal love of travel with the buying pract

This store had SO MUCH stuff I wanted, and in lots of good price ranges. I got some good cards and postcards, a really cool $ 12 beetle necklace, and a beautiful $ 40 mermaid stained glass window hang. I could have stayed much longer. They have candles, incense, high-​end art, little eccentric items of all kinds, and tons more. I highly recommend it!

A very nice shop in the heart of Old Town Eureka. Right on the corner and across from the water.
It’s a fun place to browse and find some unique gift items. Definitely worth a visit. I wouldn’t call it a gallery, but why not they own it and get to call it whatever they like, lol.
But they really do have a lot of local items and some that are made by local artisans.

I love this place. All kinds of cool things for all tastes. I saw the mother and child statuettes and wanted one with three children. They ordered it for me and contacted me as soon as it came in. I have found all sorts of fun things from large marbles that served as eyes in a dragon sculpture to a fun little birdie chip toy, gorgeous unique jewelry to leather-​bound journals. It is a must see to truly understand what they have. Keep an eye on their Facebook page, they post something every day with in depth information about it. Very informative and interesting. Love this place!

Very nice people. Looking for tourist stuff — they got it! Looking for little quirky gift — they got it! Need something unique in the finer gift range — they got it! Just want to stroll around and talk when the rest of the shops close and the sidewalks are rolled up, Many Hands crew is still there with their light on!

First discovered this little gem during a roadtrip up the CA coast. Beautiful pieces, unique artwork, and just a fantastic little experience. Bobby was extremely friendly, and I found a hand made mug that was absolutely gorgeous, and I’ve used every day since.
Until… tragedy! My boyfriend dropped the lovely keepsake, and it shattered as only truly beautiful things can do. As I swept up the remains of my lovely mug, my boyfriend snuck outside and called the store, where Bobby was working again. She was helpful and sweet, and even sent pictures of the mugs she had so we could pick out the ones that looked most similar to the one that broke (they’re all unique, as they’re hand made). The new mugs arrived this morning, and they’re so beautiful, it was almost worth breaking that first keepsake. Many thanks to both Bobby and the original pottery maker for their work and customer service.
This place is not to be missed!

Last year my brother took the plunge and remarried. It was at this turning point that he and I decided that we would meet annually, half way between the central Oregon Coast and the Bay Area. So last year was our first annual visit in Eureka.
While strolling around downtown, we found the Many Hands Gallery, located across from the plaza. Although there were 5 of us with a dizzying array of tastes and desires, we all managed to find something to look at.
My bro and his new bride enjoyed the jewelry, I was captivated by the «Dios de los Muertos» magnets and trinkets, Honey Bunny was lost in the nautical section and Theresia D. just floated all over.
Like Anna L. said, there are similar types of shops in the bay area, but this one had it’s on particular charm. And the prices were reasonable. You can find a nice gift or momento for $ 5.

We love Many Hands. We’ve gotten many a Christmas and birthday present here, from Huichol beaded figurines to beautiful Kütahya ceramics from Turkey. Last Christmas we got everyone a Turkish nazarlik (a blue glass evil-​eye pendant) as a stocking stuffer. Many Hands tries to buy ethically on fair-​trade principles, often dealing directly with craftsman’s cooperatives. A great place to stop in and browse, and if you need to buy a gift, it’s full of great ideas. One of Old Town Eureka’s cooler shops.

Awesome selection of stuff you can give for gifts. Has something for everyone. Very friendly and helpful staff. We love this store. Too many positives to list.
Leave small kids at home, too many fragile gifts. My four year old loves this store, but she is a good listener.

I know the owner of this place, Phil, as he is my neighbor. This is such a great place, it’s like an art gallery and gift shop in one. There are nick knacks but lots of nice things too. Very artsy and local crafts too. The prices are good for what they have to offer. It is located right across from the Gazebo in old town Eureka. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. They love to help tourists and are proud of what they sell and proud to offer you any assistance with places to see in the area.

Even though I could find similar places like this in SF or around the bay area, I thought this place was cute and had lots of knick knacks for your paddy wacks. Not sure where that came from, but let’s go with the flow… Like Roger W stated in his review, there are lots of items of a spirituatl nature, which is sorta my cup of tea, so, I loved browsing around. The owner had local items which is a nice touch, especially when you want to make sure you are buying something unique if you are from out of town.
There was a beautiful necklace pendant (?) of an elaborate tree formed from different pieces of of intriquite curved silver wires. It was gorgeous and I would have bought it if it wasn’t $ 125 bucks! However, I do believe it was worth that much for the work that was put into it, but not in my budget at this time. boohoo. They had plenty more affordable pieces though.
I ironically left with some local soy candles that smelled great. They had some fun/​unique scents such as Monkey Farts (which was actually nice, believe it or not), Pear Berry, Old Fashioned Apple Pie, Orange Danish, Pineapple Mango, Desire, Rain Forest. I love soy candles because they usually smell much more fragrant than wax.
OH, and the plus was that the candles were made by a company that supports disabled (or differently abled) workers! Being the Social Worker I am, I had to get them!

This is a find in historic Eureka if you are into handcrafted, artisan craftworks. There were many items there of a spiritual nature, wikka, Christian, etc with many of the usual burlwood, glasswork and turquoise you would expect to be there.
Astra the manager was especially helpful in getting a delicate selection wrapped and boxed even though there was a street fair going on outside the store and there were plenty of customers.
