Specialties
We have been dealers in antique maps, atlases and prints and rare books for over thirty years. For more than a quarter of a century we’ve been members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA) — the principal rare book dealer organization in the United States — and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB). George has served on the ABAA’s Board of Governors. We’re charter members of the International Antiquarian Mapsellers Association (IAMA), and also members of the Society for the History of Discoveries, Boston Map Society, Chicago Map Society, International Map Collectors Society, Map Society of Wisconsin, Michigan Map Society, and the Washington Map Society.
History
Established in 1976.
The business grew out of George’s hobby of collecting rare maps. At first it was part-time, but when he grew tired of doing tax returns it became full-time.
Mary was involved from the start. Her knowledge of history, art and geography were invaluable in preparing descriptions and researching unusual items. Her high-school Latin came in handy when reading the text on early maps. She had never expected Latin would be useful in business.
At first we sold at book and antique fairs as well as by issuing printed catalogs and lists. In 1991 we opened a gallery in Highland Park’s Ravinia business district. In 2004 we moved the gallery to Evanston to be closer to our Chicago clients, a move that worked out very well.
We hope you’ll visit our gallery and see our extensive stock of genuine antique maps and prints.
