This is got to be the worst Chinese good I’ve ever had. The vegetable fried rice was mostly big pieces of onions, one out two pieces of broccoli, and lots of green peas. The spring roll and egg roll were worse than frozen ones bought at the grocery store. I’ll never buy food there again.

Called a «simple» order that included 3 egg rolls for delivery. These guys are next door. Had to call twice after one hour. Then the order shows up. Only one egg roll but I paid for three. I called and the guy on the phone couldn’t grasp that one doesn’t equal three. I had to tell him 5 times before he got it. No apologies. So frustrated I hung up. And the beef with vegetable dish I got sucked. Beef is not supposed to be beige. Not going back to these morons. Much better restaurants all over Evanston.

Well, now I’d give it 2 ½ stars, not 3. They have enlarged into the space next door, and have replaced the old worn out floor with nice looking tile, have new booths and tables and chairs, and even upgraded their china. I still wouldn’t give it an award for decorating, but at least it’s not depressing. My brother ordered an egg roll and finished it(but admittedly, he will eat almost anything), but I still think they are not worth eating. Some of the other dishes are passable. The sesame chicken was okay. The noodles in the pork lo mein were slightly chewy and oily as they should be, but the dish lacked pork and vegetables. The Mongolian Beef should be called something else because it definitely is not what is usually served, nevertheless it is fine. Now, I would go back if I wanted something stir fried that is close to my house.

Best and least costly Chinese lunch I’ve had on the North Shore. Fried Rice is moist; Hot & Sour Soup is terrific; General Tsoa’s Chicken and Cashew Chicken are delicious.

I tried Hunan Spring 2 weeks ago for my work from home lunch option. The shrimp fried rice is FANTASTIC. The Kung Pao beef is AMAZING. And the broccoli with garlic sauce is DELICIOUS. I am a bit of a snob regarding Chinese restaurants since I grew up near Chinatown and Chinese was a staple meal at least twice a week. So guess where I’m getting my work-from-home lunch every Wednesday??? HUNANSPRING

We’re currently in limbo of finding a good Chinese place. This is not our new pick. One star goes to the delivery guy. Nice, and super fast delivery. Came in about 25 minutes. Another star goes to my sweet and sour chicken. Although, you’ve seriously failed as a Chinese place if you mess that up. Minus a star for the mongolian beef. It’s 98% veggies, which is great and all, but«where’s the beef?». Minus a star for the crab rangoons. I LOVE crab rangoons. But there were so strange. I ate 2⁄6 and had to stop. They’re that bad. Minus another for the price. It’s just too high for what you get. The portions aren’t smaller than average, but the prices are a little above.

This is my second time having Hunan spring! So good! The staff is super friendly, pick up was quick! I ordered general tsao chicken, veggie low mein and potstickers. So good the veggies were crisp and fresh, no grease. Great quality food this is now my go to Chinese place! Thanks Hunan spring!

I’ve been eating at Hunan Spring for 4 or 5 years now and I had always really liked it. Something has changed since the renovation, though. I don’t know if they lost their chef after being closed longer than expected or it’s something else, but the last two times I got food there it just seemed so mediocre. I have not had any of the problems other reviewers have listed and the food is still OK in a pinch, but I used to look forward to their food and I really don’t any more.

Look no further then to this star of the orient. When the light house shines Mariners and professors a like grace the pedestals of Hunan Spring for the mighty general tso’s chickens stand undefeated within the 5 – 10 miles circumference of this bistro.

A previous reviewer made the point that«it’s good for what it is,» and I wholeheartedly agree. What it is, is cheap Americanized Chinese food. Not my choice every day, but sometimes it really hits the spot! You can get lunch here for $ 6.25(a protein plus either white or fried rice), and at a smaller size that your normal huge serving from a Chinese restaurant, this portion still leaves me with leftovers. The veggie fried rice is delicious — I recommend upgrading for a small charge. If you’re picking up your order to go, parking is easy and your food is ready in less than ten minutes. One thing to be careful of: the sauce for my sweet and sour chicken to-go order was packaged in a mini version of those typical paper Chinese carryout containers. The first time I ordered, I didn’t realize that and was clumsy with my to go bag. When I got home, there was sweet and sour sauce all over. With a little more care, this set up works fine, though!

This place was pretty disappointing. We ordered delivery at 5:45 on a Thursday night, and didn’t get our food until 7:15, so pretty much an hour and a half after the order. The egg rolls and fried rice were very bland. And their pepper steak had no flavor what so ever. At first I liked the General Tso’s chicken, it was crunchy and flavorful, but after the second little piece, it became too much. It tasted like it was coated in sugar, not breading. It seems where the others lacked flavor, this dish was a bit overwhelming. And the price for two dinner specials was $ 23, which isn’t super expensive, but compared to under $ 20 at other places, that have better tasting food, it seems like a rip off.

PLEASEREAD!!! MUSTREAD!!! PROCEEDWITHCAUTION, CHECKFORSPOILEDROTTENFOODBEFOREYOUEAT !!! my husband and I have been faithful customers for over 2 years and never had anything but great times and food there together. we dine in almost once a week sometimes 2 so we are very familiar with the food and those who work there. Upon coming, excited, the other day we both ordered our favs. when my food came it looks very appetizing. I smelled soothing coming from the food that seem to smell a lil spoiled I, I tried a vegetable and it did not taste as it should’ve. I honestly when I cut into the chicken it had a very od texture, I’ve never seen before. and a rancid taste. YUCK!!! I immediately and politely called for assistance. I did not want to be so alarming respecting the fact that other guest were dining is as well. the«manager» came and I explained to him that I wanted to exchange my meal for something else. I kindly explained to him that I did not like what I was served. He told me I can change however I will have to still pay for the meal cooked. I then said I will not pay for something that was not edible and that was not acceptable. he then insulted my intelligence by laughing and say have I even ate this before, REALLY!!! said he will only charge us $ 5 then $ 2, still I will not pay. my husband told him that we have been loyal customers for over 2 years and we never complain can we please just get something that we can eat. he said I know I see you guys ALLTHETIME and no you just pay me $ 2 for the food because she bit from it I can tell… of course I did how else would I have know it was spoiled and rotting even more on the plate. How rude and horrible. we decided to just leave without being able to eat, they even threatened to call the police because we will not pay for the disgusting food.(Mind Blowing)! I would think they care more then just a $ here. why lose 2 good customers and over $ 20 worth of food because you want your guest to pay for rotted food fried, colored, and sauced, NEVERAGAINWILLWEBEBACKHERE!!! Sincerely, Sick to my stomach!!!

I don’t get where the bad reviews come from. I used to come to this place before they remodeled when they didn’t even have air condition when I came back to Chicago this summer I saw in shock to see how amazing it looked inside. Every time I’m in town I come here because it’s perfect. The price is cheap, the place is cleaned, the service is amazing, and the food is just untouchable. The sesame chicken is hands down the best sesame chicken I have ever had. The shrimp with garlic sauce will make you wanna leave that garlic taste in your mouth all day. Haha it’s truly that good. I love this place so sad I’m going back home and can’t have it all the time. I’m already looking forward to coming back and having this. Give this place a shot you will truly not be dissapointed.

Really love this place! Having lived in Evanston and Rogers Park for the past 5 years, I’m surprised I haven’t given this place a shot before! Now that they’ve renovated the place looks really nice and still has great deals on food! Lunch special are $ 5.75 and will fill you up. The thing I love most is that after eating food here, I don’t feel like a thirsty camel! They don’t use MSG and still manage to make tasty Chinese food! A++!!!

First time trying their food and lucked out. The sesame chicken lunch special was delicious and serving was enough to share. You will have to pay $ 1 more for the dish but well worth it. Their service was friendly and my order was ready in less than 10 minutes.

Sometimes you want spaghetti and meatballs. Sometimes you want a giant burrito or nachos drenched in cheddar cheese. And it doesn’t matter that no one in Italy or Mexico eats those things. Or that they are American inventions that where only inspired by their claimed countries of origin. It’s what you ate as a kid and still love as an adult even if you’ve now had real, authentic, and delicious Italian and Mexican. This place is the equivalent of that, but with Chinese food. It’s the great non-authentic Americanized Chinese food that we all ate before when discovered that no one in china really eats it. But, hey, because it’s non-authentic and Americanized doesn’t stop you from enjoying a thick crust pepperoni pizza. Same rules should apply there. This place is for that Chinese food take out that just has to be scratched every once in a while. And it’s the best of that kind of Chinese. Big portions, cheap, tasty, complete with cliched fortune cookies. The food comes quickly but, just like all those old-school Chinese places, the staff is polite but not too good with the social graces. When I’ve called, I’ve never been told when it’s ready or how much it is. PROTIP: It’s always ready for pick up in about 10 minutes. Go if you love good, low cost, Americanized Chinese food. Don’t do if you’re looking for authentic or traditional. Luckily, we live in a city where you can get both depending on your craving!
