Just got back from having my hair retrimmed. I should preface this by saying, I’m not the best at talking about styles or fades, so maybe the stylist never understood my requests. That said– I went in last week to get a professional-​style short trim for a job interview, walked out looking like Macklemore. When I had asked for it shorter up top, the stylist talked me out of it. After not liking my do for a week, I went back to have it shortened as I had asked, and this time got my whole head buzzed. As well, I was charged more for the buzz fix-​up then for the first trim.

Joe can cut hair and is a shave pro and he is the reason I go. But he didn’t cut today. The lady with the rings did. I did’t like the cut, but my wife says it looks good.

A fantastic barber in his own right Joe knows his trade well and has mastered the craft of the straight razor shave. A shave with a straight razor is not something to scoff at. Most places won’t do it because it’s daunting for both the patron whose neck is exposed while an extremely sharp blade is run across it as well as for the barber who must have a steady hand and nerves. Joe does this effortlessly and without pretention.

I tried this place out based on positive reviews. I regret having to post this but, I just paid $ 15 bucks to get butchered. Hopefully you can avoid the same fate. I showed the stylist a picture of myself with the haircut I wanted and she actually told me that I’ve gotten fat since the picture was taken. Rude and incompetent. My hair is now so short I can see my scalp, and worse, it’s not a consistent length. I’ve got random spots that look like weeds in a mowed lawn. My wife is in tears right now about our upcoming holiday photos. Maybe my stylist was having a bad day but I’ll never go here again.

After my father had a stroke, he had problems with facial shaving. Joe had shaved my father with accuracy and precision.
Later, my father had gone for occupational therapy to strengthen his right arm until he can shave on his own.
Joe and his family will take care of your haircut needs. He and his staff give great haircuts with good attention to detail. I prefer this salon over those generic franchises.
His shop is clean and very well maintained. There was no language barrier between myself and any of his staff.
Price for a haircut is competitive and not too expensive around $ 12.00 and a tip.
You can classify Joe much more to be a barber than a hair salonist. However, he expanded other niche areas such as haircuts/​treatment for women and children.
Thus he dubbed the shop a salon …

I came here on a Saturday afternoon to get threading done. There was no wait and the lady that did my threading was friendly and quick. I wish I had known they just except cash. I guess I should have looked before sitting down in the chair. Oh well I know for next time!

The best place for threading and a clean shave. Their attention to detail is immaculate!
I come here every time I visit Evanston to get a good thread (hard to come by). Can’t beat the price, the staff, the convenience. Everything. Street parking is fairly easy to find and it’s a family run business so I’m happy to give them my support.

I only come here to thread/​wax my eyebrows! They do an amazing job! The price is great and the owner and employees are very very nice. My husband will only get his hair cut with Joe (owner). He does a great job and my husband also loves going there to get a shave.

Best place for an eyebrow thread! Can walk in anytime. They are quick, clean and super nice. Also, they do a really great job shaping, too. Reasonably priced at $ 6/​thread.

First, I’m just looking for a simple medium reg. I don’t need a hairstylist just a barber. This seems to be a challenge for Evanston to provide. You can Either go to the over priced salons that pepper downtown or the pos hair cutteries.
Joe’s falls in between. You can get a decent cut for $ 15 after tip but the consistency is lacking. My first experience was head and shoulders above Hair, who botched a 2 on the sides to fade, how? idk…
Pluses: Ran by a family, who are really nice and won’t tell you which shampoo you should be using. (True story, happened at Hair)

I moved here from Cleveland, the land of the fresh fades. I went in and Dolly took care of me, perfect pompadour. Quick, easy, and finished with the straight razor. The price is great, $ 12 for a cut and they accept credit cards. Just go here.

Joe’s Hair Salon, honestly offers some of the best customer service, around town… if you need a professional looking cut… you can get it here… if you need a fresh tapering and/​or lining… you can get it here… and walk-​ins are welcome (which is a plus, if you’re on the run)…not to mention, Joe’s an efficient and accurate barber who knows what he’s doing… just got my cut today from Joe.

Eyebrow threading. 5 bucks, 5 minutes, in and out. Nicely done, and they are SHAPED, not just «cleaned up». I got the nice lady who works there, did not catch her name. I will be back for more threading. They still looked great after 2 weeks.

I went here @ 9am on a Saturday morning and got Dolly to cut my hair. She was pleasant and all but as another reviewer pointed out She was speaking Arabic to Joe while she was cutting my hair. People should realize that when you speak another foreign language most people think they are being talked about. This was no exception as it was a bit unnerving as she yakked on with Joe and were even laughing which made things worse. The haircut was ok and cost only $ 10. Would I go back? Maybe if I was desperate perhaps. Given that I OCD about getting my haircut, I probably would revisit.

Several years ago, when I was on active duty stationed in Jacksonville, NC, it was was easy to get an excellent fade. Military towns are chock full of barbers who do almost nothing but regulation haircuts ²⁴⁄₇. I’ve found a few stylists who could cut a decent fade since then, but they just didn’t have the touch. What’s more, very few people will do razor fades anymore, and those who do often just whip out a disposable safety razor and nibble at your hairline a little. There’s not much I miss about Jacksonville, but there was an embarrassment of riches when it came to barbers.
I found Joe’s on Unilocal after moving to Rogers Park recently, and decided to give it a try after noticing he «specializes» in fades (among «anything else you want,» as he was quick to inform me). Joe gave me the best medium fade I have had in my civilian life. I opted for a razor fade and received the full straight razor treatment, complete with a warm towel, shaving cream, and a nice dusting of talc. The man’s an artist; it’s clear that he is meticulous about his work. The only deduction is for Joe’s chair-​side manner, which can be a bit brusque; all the hairstylists tend to carry on conversations with each other in their native language while working with their customers. None of them have ever been rude, but I can’t exactly laud the quality of their customer service, either.
There’s nothing upscale or trendy to be found here – just a simple barbershop – and I can’t speak to the skill of the other stylists. But for the services of an excellent barber, Joe fits the bill. I’ll definitely be returning!

When I walked in to Joe’s there was a lady and a man. The lady sat me down and asked me a few questions about how I’d like my hair cut, then she basically talked to the other guy in a foreign language for the entire time. Not very professional in my opinion.
Quality of haircut was poor to mediocre. Lots of uneven hair lengths all around. I wouldn’t come here again, even for the price.

The stylists here seem like very kind people! Their prices are also relatively low, and I like the location.
The bad news is that the girls who work here don’t seem to have a great understanding of the English language. I tried explaining what I wanted done with my hair and the price that I wanted to pay; and I was misunderstood.
Joe, the owner, seemed to comprehend what I had to say.

I had been on the search for a great eyebrow threadist and can finally say I found one! Dolly is AMAZING! I have thick eyebrows and there is a certain part on one of my eyebrows that no one had ever been able to truly «blend» it in with the rest of the eyebrow hair and Dolly did it with no problem. Every time I come to have my eyebrows threaded by her I leave with the perfect arch and she is super affordable. So glad my search is over! :)

This is my fourth time at Joe’s, and I’ve been pleased every time. I would give them really poor directions, like «short on the side and long on the top,» and they would give me some of the best haircuts of my life. To say I was satisfied is an understatement (and I am very vain with my looks). For men’s hair at least, they pay so much attention to detail, using a straight razor to finish and giving complimentary product. This is a small business that truly deserves my $ 10, which is why I keep coming back.
For Northwestern students like myself, it’s easy to get on the intercampus shuttle, get off at Jewel, and walk a block to here. It’s worth it. I don’t go anywhere else. So I suggest trying Joe’s at least once, and you won’t be disappointed.
