History

Established in 2005.

Multilingual Connections is a Chicago translation agency that helps connect you with your communities and world. We have been providing translation, transcription and interpretation services for corporate, not-​for-​profit, and governmental clients and innovative language training for businesses across industries and across the country.

Multilingual Connections was founded by linguistic anthropologist Dr. Jill K. Bishop, who oversaw language, culture and diversity programs for Chipotle Mexican Grill. After providing workplace English/​ESL and Spanish classes for employees and translation services for human resources and operations, she started her own business and now works across all industries and languages.

I’m Jill Kushner Bishop, Founder & President of Multilingual Connections. I’m a linguistic anthropologist, and I’ve taught English and Spanish around the world and have researched, written and lectured on the subject of language, culture and identity.

Prior to founding Multilingual Connections, I was responsible for the development and implementation of language, culture and diversity programs for 130 Chipotle Mexican Grill locations. In addition to my MA and PhD in Linguistic Anthropology from UCLA, I have a BA in the Teaching of Spanish from the University of Illinois. I’ve taught at UCLA, Kendall College, Robert Morris College, Loyola Marymount University, Harper College and others. When I’m not working, I’m spending time with my husband and young son in Evanston.

When my high school student decided that she wanted to continue her Arabic lessons, I contacted Multilingual Connections (because I remembered their Groupon offering). Jennifer quickly set me up with two possible teachers in our neighborhood who had flexible schedules. We’ve been working with Marwa now since August and we’re thrilled with her teaching skills, professionalism, flexibility in scheduling and overall wonderful manner. My daughter can’t wait to go to her classes each week and eagerly does her homework assignments. She’s made great progress under Marwa’s tutoring.
I would highly recommend Multilingual Connections because of their ability to find dedicated teachers, fair pricing, and easy scheduling.

I used both translation and voice over work for business on a short deadline during a holiday week. This was conducted all by phone, email and downloading mp3 files. It was a fanastic experience and the deadline was met. And, oh yeah, I saved over $ 3,500 from my previous translator so I’m kind of happy about that as well. This is my new go to company for translations and voice over work.

I love it here. The rooms are bright colors and the staff is cheerful. I am taking my first language class as an adult and jumping straight into conversation has been really fun for me.
I’m looking forward to taking a boot camp and maybe even some private lessons. You can also practice your Spanish at Meet-​Up nights on Wednesdays for free, 7−9pm.

An update on the response from Multilingual. I was told I could attend a language boot camp free of charge (a $ 150 value) due to my less-​than-​stellar experience with my Arabic course, but since I’m moving out of town I asked if I could instead have a partial refund for the class I already took. I was told this is not possible, so that’s that.
My feelings still stand: this place does not understand language pedagogy and has sub-​standard instructors. In addition, you’re paying more for a course here, hour for hour, than you’d pay at an Illinois university or one of the numerous tech colleges in town.

I used their translation services on a tight deadline. Alberto was very responsive and helpful, we were able to get our documents completed on time. The pricing was higher than we originally thought but that was partly due to us adding more pages, they were still lower than some of the other pkaces I called. Overall, I was very pleased with their services.

I absolutely love Multilingual Chicago. The space is beautiful and relaxing — there are 4 classrooms and then a café area with lots of seating and free coffee (really good coffee!) and tea, and free WiFi, which is great if you’re waiting for your kids to get done with class :) They do language classes for adults and kids and one Sunday a month a bilingual boot camp which my friends want to try for Spanish!

First of all, you go in and they have a nice little loungy area. Free tea, wine, snacks. Free wifi. Nice and newly decorated. Cute too. Love the Latin American art work in the bathrooms. Super nice staff. So, as for the classes, have only attended 3 but can tell you, great teachers. Make you feel at ease, fun activities, mix it up, etc. The book they use is great! High frequency Spanish words, idioms, etc… I had a groupon this time. I would like to take next session as well, but as you know, language classes are expensive… I would recommend this place.

Just wrapped up a great 8 weeks at MC! MC was very accommodating and helped me find the right class. It was so much fun. The facility is also well thought out, comfortable, provides a great atmosphere, and I sure appreciated the wines and teas and snacks for the adult classes. My teacher’s conversational-​driven approach was perfect, and the people in class with me were great. Thanks MC!

I took a class here after getting one of the YouSwoop deals-​the Spanish bootcamp class to be exact this past Sunday. The classrooms were very modern and they even had a lunchroom with tea, coffee, and snacks. Very nice. The staff is super friendly. I’ve heard there is free parking right by the school, but I parked nearby in the neighborhood. They have a lot of activities to practice the language throughout the class so that keeps one from getting bored. I realized definitely though that I learn better by reading first, and the class is more listening and comprehending and for a person with me with a nearly nonexistent attention span, it probably won’t work, but the classes are good, and I’m sure someday I’ll be back.

I have painful memories of an entire classroom of kids laughing as a I mangled German verbs. and grew up with a total lack of self-​confidence regarding learning a foreign language. I didn’t want our child to have the same experience… and I’m certain he wouldn’t at Multilingua.
This is a great school for kids… warm, friendly, fun and a great place for their waiting parents… free WiFi, organic snacks and a lovely little café like area in which parents can relax or work.

I took a one day Boot Camp here and thought it was great! It’s hard with my schedule to commit to a weekly class, so this was perfect! It had all the basics to make me feel like I had a good background for the language. The teachers are great, too!

my daughter took a spanish class her and really loved it, she is three. The teacher was so patient and energetic. It made me tired just watching them. They did crafts in spanish, which was a huge hit with my daughter. Now my she asks me where I want my stickers in spanish.

My fiancée and I are getting married in Mexico this coming Spring and thought it would be fun to do a weekend spanish class to prepare for our trip. Lucky for us, MLC offers a truly cool program called Bilingual Boot Camp.
We arrived on Saturday at noon and spent the better part of the weekend at this terrific school. Everything, including, the instructors, the owner, the curriculum, the ambiance of the space, the yummy snacks and hipness of the neighborhood was perfect for us.
The weekend curriculum covered common verbs, vocab and phrases. All very useful for a beginning or even a lower level intermediate spanish speaker. The teachers were great about showing us how to use what we were learning in real life, as we spent a portion of the weekend out in the neighborhood going to restaurants, street vendors and stores where spanish was spoken .
Gratefully, not only was the class itself fun and full of useful Spanish, but the classroom space itself is both cleverly designed and well-​thought out.
Bottom line: A wonderfully enriching way to spend a weekend learning about Latin American culture and language, presented by people who are passionate about teaching.
