Nathan Kipnis’ interest in energy efficient building design was critically shaped by the 1973 oil embargo. His dedication to green design began in earnest upon beginning his architectural studies at the University of Colorado in 1979, taking as many solar design and technology classes as possible. Mr. Kipnis’ first solar home was built in Boulder, Colorado in 1983.

Mr. Kipnis received his Master of Architecture with an emphasis in Energy Conscious Design from Arizona State University in 1985. His undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado at Boulder…

He has received several awards and distinctions including having his design built for the ‘Green Homes for Chicago’ international design competition. He was honored with the 2007 Environmental Stewardship Award from the City of Evanston and was awarded ‘Home of the Decade’ from Natural Home Magazine for the Sturgeon Bay Vacation Home…

Mr. Kipnis is currently a co-​chair for the Renewable Energy Committee for the City of Evanston’s Climate Action Plan and has been working towards bringing an offshore wind farm off of Evanston’s shoreline, which just received a Design Evanston Award.
