Steve Lacabanne was born in San Francisco and began playing drums at the age of twelve. As a young adult he helped form several rock bands and performed in the bay area. While attending City College of San Francisco he became interested in Jazz Improvisation and continued to perform with various jazz musicians, including pianist Linda Mankin. Steve later attended San Francisco State University where he studied percussion performance with David Rosenthal, principal percussionist of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. While eventually earning a master’s degree Steve became proficient at playing marimba, xylophone and kettle drums.

In 1998 Steve moved to central California and taught drums and percussion in his local studio, and as an instructor for Connecting Waters Charter School. He continued to perform with local bands as well as drum in a local Gospel group. Steve also is an accomplished instrument maker and specializes in making Latin and African percussion instruments.
